Identification of WNK Gene in Salvia miltiorrhiza Reveals SmWNK7 Positively Regulates Root Growth and Salt Tolerance.

The dried roots and rhizomes of Salvia miltiorrhiza are widely used and economically important traditional Chinese medicinal materials. Land salinization affects the growth of S. miltiorrhiza, resulting in a decline in its quality and yield. WNK kinases belong to a unique family of serine/threonine kinases. They act as key regulators of plant growth, development and abiotic stress responses. However, this gene family has not been systematically characterized in Salvia miltiorrhiza. In this study, nine SmWNK genes were identified at the whole-genome level in S. miltiorrhiza. Phylogenetic analys

GhVIP1-GhMYB44 module regulates cotton salt tolerance by regulating stress-related genes and enhancing ROS degradation.

Soil salinization severely impacts cotton yield and quality. Excess salt stimulates excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in oxidative damage and impairment of cell membrane integrity. Therefore, enhancing the antioxidant capacity of cotton is a key strategy to improve salt tolerance. In this study, we systematically characterized the salt tolerance function of GhVIP1, a bZIP family transcription factor. Overexpression (OE) of GhVIP1 enhanced tolerance to salt stress in Arabidopsis, as evidenced by higher germination rates, root length, chlorophyll content, and tot

B-box zinc finger transcription factor SlBBX6 negatively regulates drought and salt stress tolerance in tomato.

Drought and salt stress severely constrain tomato growth and yield. The B-box (BBX) zinc finger transcription factor family is widely known for its roles in core developmental processes such as photomorphogenesis and flowering regulation, and its regulatory functions in abiotic stress responses have attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, the precise molecular mechanisms by which tomato BBX family members mediate drought and salt stress tolerance remain to be systematically elucidated. In this study, we functionally characterized SlBBX6, a tomato subfamily I BBX gene encoding

The OsBZR1-OsGLR3.4 Module Confers Rice Salt Tolerance through the Interplay between Ca2+ and Brassinosteroid Signaling.

The transient elevation of cytosolic Ca2+ levels is recognized as an essential signal for salt tolerance in plants, whereas the mechanisms for encoding Ca2+ signatures during this process have been largely unknown. Here, we show that glutamate receptor-like channel OsGLR3.4-mediated Ca2+ influx regulates rice salt adaptation by interplaying with BR signaling. Functional loss of OsGLR3.4 leads to decreased salt tolerance coupled with reduced Ca2+ influx, whereas its overexpression markedly enhances salt adaptation in rice. OsBZR1, the key transcription factor in BR signaling, transcriptionally

Integrated WGCNA and TO-GCN analysis reveals pathways and genes underlying salt tolerance in Sesbania cannabina.

Salt stress seriously threatens the growth and development of plants. To investigate how Sesbania cannabina responds to salt stress, we constructed a temporal regulatory response network under salt stress by integrating the physiological and transcriptomic data from 'Zhongke Jing No.1' at five time points (0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h, n = 3) after salt treatment. The results indicated that salt stress increased the relative electrical conductivity (REC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, induced the accumulation of osmotic regulators, and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities. A total of 688,424,7

MxFRO4 confers iron and salt tolerance through up-regulating antioxidant capacity associated with the ROS scavenging.

Iron is involved in various metabolic pathways of plants. Stress from iron deficiency and toxicity in the soil adversely affects plant growth. Therefore, studying the mechanism of iron absorption and transport by plants is of important for resistance to iron stress and to increase crop yield. In this study, Malus xiaojinensis (a Fe-efficient Malus plant) was used as research material. A ferric reduction oxidase (FRO) family gene member was cloned and named MxFRO4. The MxFRO4 encoded a protein of 697 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular weight of 78.54 kDa and a theoretical isoelectri

The role of cyanoalanine synthase and alternative oxidase in promoting salt stress tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana.

BACKGROUND: Cyanide is a toxic chemical that inhibits cellular respiration. In plants, cyanide can be produced by themselves, especially under stressful conditions. Cyanoalanine synthase (CAS) is a key enzyme involved in plant cyanide detoxification. There are three genes encoding CAS in Arabidopsis thaliana, but the roles of these genes in the plant's response to stress are less studied. In addition, it is known that alternative oxidase (AOX) mediates cyanide-resistant respiration, but the relationship between CAS and AOX in regulating the plant stress response remains largely unknown. Nitric Oxide Improves Salt Tolerance of Cyclocarya paliurus by Regulating Endogenous Glutathione Level and Antioxidant Capacity.

Cyclocarya paliurus is commonly used to treat diabetes in China. However, the natural habitats of C. paliurus are typically affected by salt stress. Previous studies showed that nitric oxide (NO) level was related to salt tolerance of C. paliurus, and its synthesis was induced by exogenous hydrogen sulfide. However, the effects of different NO donors in alleviating the negative effect of salt stress are still unclear. In the present study, C. paliurus seedlings pretreated with three NO donors (S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine, SNAP and S-nitrosoglutathione, GSNO and sodium nitroprusside, SNP) w

Ketoprofen lysine salt has a better gastrointestinal and renal tolerability than ketoprofen acid: A comparative tolerability study in the Beagle dog.

Due to the widespread use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the incidence of NSAID-associated adverse events has increased exponentially over the past decades. Ketoprofen (ketoprofen acid, KA) is a widely used NSAID and, like with other NSAIDs, its use can be associated with adverse effects that especially involve the gastrointestinal tract and the kidney. The salification of KA with L-lysine has led to the synthesis of ketoprofen lysine salt (KLS), which is characterized by higher solubility and a more rapid gastrointestinal absorption compared to KA. Previous studies have re

A salt-tolerant tetracycline degrading fungal strain of Candida palmioleophila: Characterization and degradation pathway.

Tetracycline (TC), a widely used persistent antibiotic, is frequently detected in aquatic environments and soil, posing serious ecological and health risks. Identifying functional strains capable of TC removal is viewed as a promising solution to controlling TC contamination. In contrast to bacteria, very few fungal strains that degrade TC have been isolated. In this study, a novel salt-tolerant TC-degrading fungus, Candida palmioleophila TDLZ1, was isolated, and its TC degradation capacity, pathways, and genomics were investigated. The strain effectively biodegraded TC under aerobic condition

Integrated Strategies for Saline-Alkali Soil Remediation and the Development of Salt-Alkali-Tolerant Crops.

Soil salinization is a major threat to global food security and sustainable agriculture, soil salinization affects approximately 8.31 × 108 hm2 of soil resources globally. The remediation and productive use of saline-alkali land have therefore become urgent global challenges. This review summarises the classification and global distribution of saline-alkali soils and critically compares physical, chemical, microbial, and phytoremediation strategies. It then examines the physiological, cellular, and molecular mechanisms that support plant salt and alkali tolerance, with emphasis on ion transpor

Salt-Tolerant Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria for Enhancing Crop Productivity of Saline Soils.

Soil salinity has emerged as a serious issue for global food security. It is estimated that currently about 62 million hectares or 20 percent of the world's irrigated land is affected by salinity. The deposition of an excess amount of soluble salt in cultivable land directly affects crop yields. The uptake of high amount of salt inhibits diverse physiological and metabolic processes of plants even impacting their survival. The conventional methods of reclamation of saline soil which involve scraping, flushing, leaching or adding an amendment (e.g., gypsum, CaCl2, etc.) are of limited success a

Combined effect of betaine and trehalose on osmotic tolerance of Escherichia coli in mineral salts medium.

In mineral salts medium, supplementing with betaine in combination with increased production of endogenous osmoprotectant from a second copy of the trehalose biosynthetic genes (otsBA) improved growth of E. coli and increased the MIC for xylose, glucose, sodium lactate and NaCl. With these compounds, this combination was more effective than either betaine or trehalose alone. With succinate, this combination was no more effective than betaine alone. Neither approach improved tolerance to ethanol. A combination of betaine and increased trehalose may improve strain productivity for many bioproduc

GLK1 plays a positive role in regulating plant tolerance to alkali stress and salt-alkali mixed stress.

The Golden2-like 1 (GLK1) gene regulates photosynthesis and is associated with drought tolerance and cold tolerance. However, no report has determined the role of GLK1 in alkali tolerance. In this study, we found that MsGLK1 responds to alkali and salt-alkali mixed stresses in alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and carried out detailed functional analysis of GLK1 in the model plants Arabidopsis and Medicago truncatula. In Arabidopsis, the atglk1/2 double mutant exhibited reduced tolerance to these two stress treatments compared to the wild type. Conversely, overexpression of MsGLK1 in Arabidopsis displ

The OsSRLD-OsIMα1a-OsWRKY53 and OsSRLD-OsDIP1 Modules Balance Disease Resistance and Drought/Salt Tolerance in Rice.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to various stresses is crucial for improving crop productivity under stressful conditions. However, how plants prioritize the activation of pathways to balance disease resistance with drought and salt tolerance remains unclear. Here, we identify two regulatory modules centered on the rice protein OsSRLD, which negatively regulates disease resistance and positively regulates drought/salt tolerance. Upregulation of OsSRLD increases ABA content and reduces ROS levels under both normal and stressed conditions, suggesting its involve
