Viruses are linked to a multitude of human illnesses and can disseminate widely in urbanized environments causing global adverse impacts on communities and healthcare infrastructures. Wastewater-based epidemiology was employed using metagenomics and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays to identify enteric and non-enteric viruses collected from a large urban area for potential public health monitoring and outbreak analysis. Untreated wastewater samples were collected from November 2017 to February 2018 (n = 54) to evaluate the diversity of human viral pathogens in collected samp

During 2009-2018, four adenovirus, 10 astrovirus, 123 rotavirus, and 107 sapovirus gastroenteritis outbreaks were reported to the US National Outbreak Reporting System (annual median 30 outbreaks). Most were attributable to person-to-person transmission in long-term care facilities, daycares, and schools. Investigations of norovirus-negative gastroenteritis outbreaks should include testing for these viruses.

Acute gastroenteritis has been recognized as one of the most common diseases in humans and continues to be a major public health problem worldwide. Several groups of viruses have been reported as the causative agents of acute gastroenteritis, including rotavirus, norovirus, sapovirus, human astrovirus, adenovirus, and an increasing number of others which have been reported more recently. The epidemiology, prevalence, seasonality, and outbreaks of these viruses have been reviewed in a number of studies conducted in Japan over three decades. Rotavirus and norovirus were the two most common virus

Human sapovirus is a causative agent of acute gastroenteritis in all age groups. The use of full-length viral genomes has proven beneficial to investigate evolutionary dynamics and transmission chains. In this study, we developed a full-length genome sequencing platform for human sapovirus and sequenced the oldest available strains (collected in the 1970s) to analyse diversification of sapoviruses. Sequence analyses from five major genotypes (GI.1, GI.2, GII.1, GII.3, and GIV.1) showed limited intra-genotypic diversification for over 20-40 years. The accumulation of amino acid mutations in VP1

Acute gastroenteritis (AG), which may be caused by bacteria, parasites and enteropathogenic viruses, including rotaviruses, astroviruses, adenoviruses and caliciviruses, is an important health problem. The frequency of rotavirus as a cause of sporadic cases of AG ranges between 17.3% and 37.4%. Although it has been suggested that common exposure is not an important factor in the diffusion of rotavirus, it is difficult to associate apparently sporadic cases, meaning that there are probably outbreaks that go undetected. Astroviruses cause GA with a frequency ranging between 2 and 26%: outbreaks

Rotavirus and norovirus are well-known causes of viral infectious diarrhea. There are few reports on diarrhea caused by other viruses in Korea, although cases of gastroenteritis attributable to other viruses are increasing worldwide. The aims of this study were to detect various causes of viral diarrhea and to investigate their prevalence. A total of 801 fecal specimens submitted to a clinical microbiology laboratory for the detection of diarrheal viruses were included. We sought to detect rotavirus A/B/C, adenovirus, astrovirus, norovirus GI/GII, sapovirus, Aichi virus, human parechovirus, en

Viral gastroenteritis causes high morbidity worldwide. In this study, stool samples from 179 children aged 0-6 years attending Danish day care centers were investigated for gastrointestinal viruses. Each child was observed for one year with submission of samples and questionnaires every two months. Adenovirus, norovirus, rotavirus, and sapovirus were detected in samples using real-time PCR. A total of 229 (33%) of the 688 samples collected tested positive for at least one virus. At the first sampling point, adenovirus was shed by 6%, norovirus genotype I by 3% and genotype II by 12%, rotavirus

Acute gastroenteritis caused by viruses is one of the leading causes of infantile morbidity. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of human caliciviruses of the genera norovirus and sapovirus in children up to 3 years of age with acute gastroenteritis from low-income communities in the city of Salvador, Brazil. This study is an extension of previous work carried out to establish the profile of the most prevalent enteric pathogens present in these communities. In this report, 139 fecal samples, collected from July 2001 to January 2002 were analyzed by RT-PCR and 13 (9%) w

From November 2003 to March 2004 a total of 100 fecal specimens from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in the city of Birobidzhan, Eastern Russia were tested for the presence of diarrheal viruses by RT-multiplex PCR. Of these, 74 fecal specimens were positive for diarrheal viruses and this represented 74%. Among the diarrheal viruses detected, group A rotavirus was the most prevalent (67%; 67 of 100), followed by norovirus (4%; 4 of 100), group C rotavirus (1%, 1 of 100), sapovirus (1%; 1 of 100), and hepatitis A virus (1%; 1 of 100). It was found that 86.6% (58 of 67) of group A

During the months of October and November 2006-2008, norovirus was detected in the stools of 14 children hospitalized with acute diarrhea (no sapovirus). Nine of these noroviruses belonged to a unique GGII4 strain, which produced severe clinical symptoms, present only in 2007 and 2008 and absent in 2006. This strain, identified in Europe mainly in the elderly, seems to be on the rise in children in the Paris area over the past few years.

Acute gastroenteritis is the cause of considerable mortality and morbidity worldwide, particularly among children under five years in underdeveloped countries. Most acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases are attributed to viral etiologies, including rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, astrovirus, and sapovirus. This paper aimed to determine the prevalence rate of different viral etiologies of AGE in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Moreover, this paper explored rotavirus phylogenetic relatedness, compared VP7 and VP4 antigenic regions of rotavirus with vaccine strains, and explored the

Rotavirus, adenovirus, norovirus, sapovirus and astrovirus are considered to be significant global enteropathogens associated with sporadic cases and outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis. Therefore, a rapid and sensitive assay is preferred to screen for the presence of these viruses in diarrheal fecal specimens. In a previous study, we developed a reverse transcription single-round multiplex polymerase chain reaction (RT-smPCR) assay for the simultaneous detection of norovirus (genogroup I, genogroup II), sapovirus and astrovirus in fecal specimens (Yan et aL, 2003). Recently, we developed anoth
