Myiasis is a rare parasitic infestation caused by dipteran larvae, primarily from the Calliphoridae, Oestridae, and Sarcophagidae families. Though often benign, myiasis can lead to severe secondary infections. In this case report, we describe the first fatal case of gingival and tracheopulmonary myiasis caused by Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in an HIV/AIDS patient with probable histoplasmosis. The patient, a 47-yr-old male from Manzanillo, Mexico, presented with systemic infection, pancytopenia, and multiple organ failure. Upon admission, oral larval infesta

Synanthropic flies outstanding beside other flies due their relative abundance close to domestic animals and human population, to which they are able to cause myiasis or transmit pathogenic agents. As they're necrophagous they act as corpse decomposers and are useful in the forensic entomology in the post mortem interval determination. This study aimed to know flies diversity and abundance in Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Captures were made weekly, utilizing three traps baited with decaying fish meat, from June of 2008 to May of 2009 in a remainder ciliary forest of the Embrapa's

BACKGROUND: Wohlfahrtia magnifica is an obligatory parasite that causes myiasis in several warm-blooded vertebrates. Adult females deposit the first-stage larvae directly onto wounds or natural body orifices (e.g., genitalia) of the host, from where they quickly colonize the host tissue and feed on it for development. The infestation of W. magnifica can lead to health issues, welfare concerns, and substantial economic losses. To date, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of the W. magnifica-causing myiasis.
RESULTS: In this study, we collected parasitic-stage larvae of W. magnifica

House flies (Musca domestica) infected with Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) were found in fly populations collected from 12 out of 18 Danish livestock farms that were surveyed in 2007 and 2008. Infection rates ranged from 0.5% to 5% and averaged 1.2%. None of the stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans), rat-tail maggot flies (Eristalis tenax) or yellow dung flies (Scathophaga stercoraria) collected from MdSGHV-positive farms displayed characteristic salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH). In laboratory transmission tests, SGH symptoms were not observed in stable flies, flesh fli

Seven farms, two in Central Italy and five in Southern Italy, were visited for the presence of larvae-infested wounds. Ninety-six (3%) out of 3129 sheep examined had a traumatic myiasis with a very high percentage of infested animals found only in a farm (10.5%). Wounds were mainly localized on the vulva and prepuce. Infested animals were restless, anxious, and reluctant to graze. None of the 10 goats in one infested flock had wounds, whereas a shepherd dog from another flock presented a wound on the ear. All the larvae and adults reared from them in the laboratory were identified as Wohlfahrt

Myiasis has great economic and medical importance. However, myiasis in wildlife that is caused by oestroid flies is relatively rarely recorded compared with that in humans and domestic animals. Recently, during our research on the conservation of Przewalski's horse (PH), we observed two new records of oestroid flies parasitizing wildlife in China. The first is the horse nasal bot fly, Rhinoestrus sp. (Diptera: Oestridae), found in a dead PH from Kalamaili Nature Reserve. One morphotype (R. purpureus-like) was identified. The second is the Wohlfahrt's wound myiasis fly, Wohlfahrtia magnifica (S

Eight cases that occurred indoors in which the insects played an important role in the mPMI estimation are presented. The bodies of socially isolated people and old people living alone were discovered in central Italy between June and November. mPMI ranged from a few days to several weeks. Insects were collected during the body recovery and the postmortem. Climatic data were obtained from the closest meteorological stations and from measurements performed on the site. Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae species were present in 75% of the cases with Lucilia sericata and Chrysomya albiceps collected

In alpine Australia, Orthoptera are abundant, dominant herbivores, important prey species, and hosts for parasites and parasitoids. Despite the central role of orthopterans in alpine ecosystems, the impact of parasites on orthopteran populations is under-explored. In this study we describe the relationship between parasite prevalence and host sex, body size and year of collection. We accessed an existing, preserved collection of 640 Kosciuscola tristis collected from across its range between 2007 and 2011. Upon dissection we collected juvenile parasites and used molecular tools to identify the

Myiasis is a parasitic infection caused by dipteran larvae settling in living tissue and organs. Infestation is generally found in tropical and rural areas, where interaction with animals is common. It is diagnosed based on the evidence of the existence of dipteran larvae in tissues and organs. When planning the treatment, identifying the type of larvae is as important as identifying the infected organ or system. In this case report, we present the case of a female who had a biliary tract injury caused by laparoscopic cholecystectomy and who developed a postoperative enterocutaneous fistula an

Myiasis; is defined as the infestation of dead or living tissues of humans and animals by the diptera larvae. It is prevalent all over the world, especially in tropical and subtropical countries with low socioeconomic status. Myiasis of humans has been associated with low socioeconomic status, alcoholism, mental or neurological diseases, poor personal hygiene, patients with varicose veins, diabetes, malnutrition, advanced stage cancer, pediculosis, immunosuppression, sexually transmitted disease, gingivitis and other oral cavity lesions. Myiasis is most commonly seen as skin invasion in the hu

The application of insect and arthropod information to medicolegal death investigations is one of the more exacting applications of entomology. Historically limited to homicide investigations, the integration of full time forensic entomology services to the medical examiner's office in Harris County has opened up the opportunity to apply entomology to a wide variety of manner of death classifications and types of scenes to make observations on a number of different geographical and species-level trends in Harris County, Texas, USA. In this study, a retrospective analysis was made of 203 forens

Background: The monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in microorganisms that circulate in the environment is an important topic of scientific research and contributes to the development of action plans to combat the spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. As a synanthropic vector for multiple pathogens and a reservoir for AMR, flies can be used for surveillance. Methods: We collected 163 flies in the inner city of Berlin and examined them for extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli genotypically and phenotypically. Results: The prevalence of ESBL-producing

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae and aural myiasis is a rare clinic condition often occuring in children or mentally retarded people. We report the case of an unusual presentation of a bilateral aural myiasis in a mentally retarded patient with bilateral chronic otitis media caused by the third instar larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. Two larvae were located on the other ear canal while two additional larvae were located in the middle ear cavity and were removed through perforation of the tympanic membrane. Treatment of aural myiasis is based on removal of the maggots and cleansing of

Auricular tumors constitute 6% of all head-neck tumors. Malignant tumors of the auricula are generally squamous or basal cell carcinomas. Myiasis rarely occurs in healthy individuals. In general, it is a parasite that is seen in patients with mental retardation or psychiatric disorders, elderly individuals, those with poor self-care and hygiene, and those with immune system disorders. In humans, it is mainly seen in tropical and subtropical regions; however, in rare instances, it may be seen in other regions of the world. In the literature, there are limited numbers of myiasis cases reported f

Myiasis is an infestation of living or dead tissue of humans and animals by diptera larvae. Gingival myiasis is a rare pathology and is mainly associated with poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, senility, suppurative lesions, mouth breathing, mental retardation and hemiplegia. Myiasis is most common during summer since the fly population increases during this season. Mostly it occurs in farmers and people who live in tropical climates. Gingival myiasis in humans in Turkey is limited to only a few cases. According to our literature research, this is the first case of gingival myiasis produced by lar

We report a case of nasal myiasis caused by Sarcophaga spp., noted during hospitalization. A 74-year-old man was admitted with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction. The patient underwent coronary arterial bypass surgery and was then mechanically ventilated by means of a nasotracheal tube for the next 8 days. After extubation, a total of seven maggots were retrieved from both nostrils. The larvae were removed and reared to mature flies, which were identified as Sarcophaga peregrina. From the clinical course and the fly's life cycle, it was concluded that the infestation was hospital-acquired.
