Sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections profile in a mid-sized Saskatchewan City.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) pose major public health challenges. The World Health Organization reports that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) alone lead to approximately 374 million new cases annually worldwide, averaging about one million per day. Blood-borne infections also considerably contribute to the global health burden. In Canada, the 2018 Pan-Canadian Framework aims to mitigate the effects of STBBIs through collaborative initiatives. Saskatchewan has experienced rising incidence rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and congenital syphi

Menopausal hormone use and colorectal cancer in Saskatchewan: a record linkage cohort study.

It has been suggested that usage of menopausal estrogens may be associated with risk of colorectal cancer. This association was examined in a record linkage cohort study using the Saskatchewan Health Plan Databases. All women ages 43-49 who were residents in Saskatchewan in 1976 were identified from the Saskatchewan Health master registration file. These 33,003 women were linked by registration beneficiary number to the Prescription Drug Plan Database for the period January 1976 through June 1987, and to the Provincial Cancer Registry Database for the period March 1960 through December 1990. Menopausal hormone usage and breast cancer in Saskatchewan: a record-linkage cohort study.

The association between the occurrence of carcinoma of the breast and previous usage of menopausal estrogens, progestins, and oral contraceptives is examined in a record-linkage study using the Saskatchewan Health Prescription-Drug-Plan Database. Saskatchewan Health is a governmental agency that funds publicly insured health care for essentially all residents of the province. For this study, all women aged 43-49 years in 1976 resident in Saskatchewan were identified from the Saskatchewan Health master registration file. These women were linked by registration beneficiary number to the Drug-Pla

Bronchodilator use and the risk of arrhythmia in COPD: part 1: Saskatchewan cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchodilators are first-line therapy for COPD. There is some evidence that they may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias. METHODS: We used the computerized health-care databases of the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, to identify a cohort of subjects with COPD, aged ≥ 55 years, between 1990 and 1999. The subjects were followed until December 2003 for a hospital admission for, or death from, arrhythmia. A nested case-control approach was used to match each arrhythmia case on age, sex, and calendar time to 20 control subjects selected from the corresponding cohort risk set. C

Evaluating the use of house sparrow nestlings as sentinels for West Nile virus in Saskatchewan.

This study evaluated the use of house sparrow (Passer domesticus) nestlings as sentinels of West Nile virus (WNV) in the prairie grasslands of Saskatchewan. In the summer of 2006, 600 house sparrow nestlings were collected and pooled tissues tested by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. All tested negative for WNV. During the same period, no WNV was detected by mosquito surveillance in the study area and 15 WNV-infected pools were collected from the nearby city of Estevan. Six percent of avian carcasses collected from Regina, a city 100 km from the study area in the same ecozone,

Seroprevalence and risk factors for infection with West Nile virus in Saskatchewan horses, 2003.

The primary objectives of this study were to determine the seroprevalence of West Nile virus (WNV) infection of horses in Saskatchewan in 2003 and to identify risk factors for the infection. Blood samples were collected in August and October from 212 horses in 20 herds in 5 geographic zones. After accounting for within-herd clustering, the proportion of horses that had been infected with WNV, as determined by IgG and IgM antibody response, was 55.7% (95% confidence interval, 44.9% to 65.8%). The proportion of antibody-positive horses differed among herds (0% to 100%) and across ecoregions (20%

Seroprevalence of West Nile virus in Saskatchewan's Five Hills Health Region, 2003.

BACKGROUND: The Five Hills Health Region of Saskatchewan reported the highest West Nile virus (WNV) case rates in the 2003 outbreak. A serologic and telephone survey was undertaken to assess the seroprevalence of the virus and the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of the residents. METHODS: Respondents had to be at least 18 years of age, and residents of the Five Hills Health Region between July 1st and September 15th, 2003. Blood samples of respondents were tested at the National Microbiology Laboratory for flavivirus immunoglobulin using a WNV IgG ELISA and plaque reduction neutralization

Epidemiology of hepatitis C in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba compared to Canada, 1980-2023.

BACKGROUND: Canada aims to eliminate hepatitis C (HCV) by 2030. While national rates have dropped, regional disparities persist. In 2021, Manitoba had the highest new HCV rates, and Saskatchewan's rates were double the national average. This study aimed to describe the incidence and risk factors associated with HCV infections in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, compared to Canada,1980-2023. METHODS: This ecological study used publicly available government reports from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Canada (1980-2023) on HCV cases and rates by year and disaggregated by sex (female/ma

An abattoir survey of the incidence of pneumonia in Saskatchewan swine and an investigation of the microbiology of affected lungs.

The lungs of 15 409 pigs, mostly from Saskatchewan, slaughtered at an abattoir were examined over a one year period. The incidence of lesions was 36.7% for "enzootic" pneumonia and 2.1% for pleurisy unassociated with pneumonia. Seasonal variations were recorded and compared with the results of similar surveys carried out in Australia, Belgium and England. Mycoplasmological examination of lungs from 347 animals was consistently negative for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Pasteurella multocida was the commonest bacterial isolate, a result which agrees with those of other workers.

Parelaphostrongylus tenuis is newly endemic in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in central Saskatchewan.

Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, or meningeal worm, can be fatal and have detrimental effects at a population level in cervid species outside of the definitive host, the white-tailed deer (WTD) (Odocoileus virginianus), in which they cause little or no ill effects. Although well documented in Canada east of Saskatchewan, there is only one published case of P. tenuis in WTD in Saskatchewan from the 1990s, representing the northwestern distributional limit of this parasite in North America. We report 90 confirmed (47) or suspected (43) cases of P. tenuis diagnosed in natural mortalities in moose (Alc

Sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever in free-ranging moose (Alces alces) in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a sporadic disease of artiodactyls caused by several viruses in the Gammaherpesvirinae. We report two cases of MCF in free-living moose (Alces alces) from Saskatchewan. One was a thin, dehydrated, adult male found recumbent in 2006. At necropsy, ulcers were found in the intestine, bladder, and corneas. Microscopically, there was lymphocytic vasculitis and perivasculitis in many organs with infrequent fibrinoid necrosis. Ovine herpes virus-2 (OHV-2) was identified by polymerase chain reaction. A segment of the herpesviral DNA polymerase gene was 99% identical

Effect of age on hospitalized machine-related farm injuries among the Saskatchewan farm population.

Machinery-related injuries are the leading cause of fatal and hospitalized injuries on Canadian farms. In Saskatchewan, the proportion of all farm injuries related to farm machinery exceeds that reported for all of Canada. This project examined the relationship between age and various factors associated with farm machine-related injuries in Saskatchewan. A retrospective review of hospital discharge data from the administrative data set of Saskatchewan Health was conducted using external cause of injury codes to identify cases of farm machinery injury that occurred in Saskatchewan during the pe

Suspected fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) toxicosis in a herd of Saskatchewan beef cattle.

An apparent outbreak of fenugreek forage toxicosis occurred in a beef cattle herd near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in February-May 2022. The herd had consumed fenugreek hay from late fall to early winter. Clinical signs included various degrees of weakness, ataxia, knuckling, walking on hocks, and recumbency. All adult cattle in the herd eventually died or were euthanized. Feed analysis did not reveal nutritional deficiencies or mycotoxin contamination. Liver mineral and vitamin status of affected animals did not indicate any consistent abnormality. The last live cow in the herd was presented to a

Integrated Prenatal Care for Women Living With HIV: Primary Care Outcomes in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan has the highest rate of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in Canada. Of those newly diagnosed, 56% identify as female, 76% identify as Indigenous, and 71% report a history of intravenous drug use. These statistics are strikingly different compared with Canadian data. This brief communication describes prenatal care provided to women living with HIV at an interdisciplinary primary care clinic in Saskatchewan, demonstrating that, despite facing great barriers such as housing insecurity, substance use, and institutionalized racism, women living with HIV can have posit
