Satiety does not always silence attention to high-calorie foods: BMI modulates food-related attentional bias.

BACKGROUND: Attentional bias (AB) for palatable foods has been linked to overeating, yet data on its modulation with body-mass index (BMI) and hunger/satiety are inconsistent. We tested whether hunger, sensory-specific satiety and BMI interact to shape automatic capture of attention by real high-calorie foods. METHODS: Two emotional-attentional-blink (EAB) experiments presented food distractors either 300 ms (lag-3) or 900 ms (lag-9) before a neutral target. Experiment 1 (N = 183; whole BMI range) randomly assigned participants to taste (non-satiated), satiated or non-eating conditions; the s

Access to white bread as an intervention for chronic ruminative vomiting.

Research has demonstrated that providing extra and sometimes unlimited food quantities following meals can be effective in reducing or eliminating ruminative vomiting in persons with developmental disabilities. In this study, providing access to white bread was evaluated as an alternative method of satiation-based treatment of rumination displayed by an 18-year old male with mental retardation. White bread was made available during 1-h periods following daily meals and this intervention produced a reduction in ruminating to near zero levels throughout the young man's waking hours. Long-term fo

Secretin effects on gastric functions, hormones and symptoms in functional dyspepsia and health: randomized crossover trial.

Abnormal gastric accommodation (GA) and gastric emptying contribute to pathophysiology in functional dyspepsia (FD). Secretin is a key regulator of GA in animal studies. Our aim was to study the effects of secretin on gastric motility, satiation, postprandial symptoms, and key hormones. We performed two double-blind, randomized, saline-controlled crossover trials in 10 healthy volunteers and 10 patients with FD by Rome IV criteria. We used measured GA (by validated SPECT method) after a 111In radiolabeled Ensure 300-mL meal and quantified gastric emptying for 30 min by scintigraphy. Satiation

Initial application of a human laboratory model for estimating the motivational substitutability of e-cigarettes for combustible cigarettes.

This pilot study tested a novel human laboratory model for estimating the extent to which electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) serve as motivational substitutes for combustible cigarettes. The model assesses 3 parameters of substitutability, including the: (a) increase in motivational reward value of e-cigarettes after tobacco deprivation; (b) reduction in the reward value of combustible cigarettes after e-cigarette administration; and (c) comparability of the withdrawal-suppressing effects of e-cigarettes versus combustible cigarettes. Dual users (daily smokers, vaped 4+ days/week, M age = 35

Relationship of body weight with gastrointestinal motor and sensory function: studies in anorexia nervosa and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Whether gastrointestinal motor and sensory function is primary cause or secondary effect of abnormal body weight is uncertain. Moreover, studies relating continuous postprandial sensations of satiation to measurable pathology are scarce. This work assessed postprandial gastrointestinal function and concurrent sensations of satiation across a wide range of body weight and after weight change. METHODS: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and obesity (OB) were investigated in reference to normal weight controls (HC). AN were additionally investigated longitudinally. Gastric emptying,

Food-cue affected motor response inhibition and self-reported dieting success: a pictorial affective shifting task.

Behavioral inhibition is one of the basic facets of executive functioning and is closely related to self-regulation. Impulsive reactions, that is, low inhibitory control, have been associated with higher body mass index (BMI), binge eating, and other problem behaviors (e.g., substance abuse, pathological gambling, etc.). Nevertheless, studies which investigated the direct influence of food-cues on behavioral inhibition have been fairly inconsistent. In the current studies, we investigated food-cue affected behavioral inhibition in young women. For this purpose, we used a go/no-go task with pic

A pilot study: the role of the autonomic nervous system in cardiorespiratory regulation in infant feeding.

AIM: The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the interplay between the parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic nervous systems' (SNS) contributions to prefeeding, feeding and satiation in young, healthy infants. METHOD: This prospective study was completed on eleven full-term infants, less than 6 months old. Respiratory rate, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), electrodermal activity and low-frequency/high-frequency heart rate variability ratio were sampled from the infant during prefeeding, feeding and satiation periods. RESULTS: A repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a significant d

Intraduodenal infusions of fats elicit satiety in sham-feeding rats.

The satiating effect of duodenally administered fats was investigated with intraduodenal infusions of Intralipid in sham-feeding rats. Intralipid rapidly inhibited sham feeding and elicited the behavioral sequence of satiety. The satiating potency of Intralipid infusions in concentrations of 0.125-1 kcal/ml was a function of the concentration infused. The time course for Intralipid-induced satiety showed that fats inhibited feeding and led to the behavioral sequence of satiety within 15 min after the infusions began. This time course is evidence for a preabsorptive site of action to the small

Transcriptomic Analysis of Monocyte-Derived Non-Phagocytic Macrophages Favors a Role in Limiting Tissue Repair and Fibrosis.

Monocyte-derived macrophages are readily differentiating cells that adapt their gene expression profile to environmental cues and functional needs. During the resolution of inflammation, monocytes initially differentiate to reparative phagocytic macrophages and later to pro-resolving non-phagocytic macrophages that produce high levels of IFNβ to boost resolutive events. Here, we performed in-depth analysis of phagocytic and non-phagocytic myeloid cells to reveal their distinct features. Unexpectedly, our analysis revealed that the non-phagocytic compartment of resolution phase myeloid cells is

Ghrelin response to hedonic eating in underweight and short-term weight restored patients with anorexia nervosa.

Recently, anorexia nervosa (AN) has been conceptualized as a reward-related disorder, and alterations in brain reward processes have been documented in both acute and recovered AN patients. However, the role of endogenous biochemical mediators, such as ghrelin, in the modulation of reward processes has been poorly investigated in this eating disorder. Hedonic eating, that is the consumption of food exclusively for pleasure and not to maintain energy homeostasis, is a useful paradigm to investigate the physiology of food-related reward. Therefore, we assessed the response of peripheral ghrelin

Examining Weight Suppression, Leptin Levels, Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Response, and Reward-Related Constructs in Severity and Maintenance of Bulimic Syndromes: Protocol and Sample Characteristics for a Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa and related syndromes (BN-S) characterized by binge eating vary considerably in illness severity and course. Using the Research Domain Criteria framework of the National Institute of Mental Health, we developed a model positing that the same set of physiological consequences of weight suppression (WS; defined as the difference between the highest and current adult body weight) contribute to binge-eating severity and maintenance by (1) increasing the drive or motivation to consume food (reward valuation effort [RVE]) and (2) decreasing the ability for food consumptio

Gastric emptying and related symptoms in patients treated with buspirone, amitriptyline or clebopride: a "real world" study by 13C-octanoic Acid Breath Test.

BACKGROUND: Gastric motility is a key-factor in the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia (FD). 13C-octanoic Acid Breath Test (OBT) is a tool used for measuring gastric emptying time in clinical setting. We aimed to investigate the variation in FD symptoms and OBT parameters after treatment with buspirone, amitriptyline or clebopride. METHODS: Between Jan-2007 and Dec-2014, we enrolled 59 patients with FD unresponsive to first-line therapy with proton pump inhibitors and/or domperidone that underwent OBT before and after 3 months of buspirone (N.=32), amitriptyline (N.=16) or clebopride (N.=11

The acute effects of olanzapine on ghrelin secretion, CCK sensitivity, meal size, locomotor activity and body temperature.

OBJECTIVE: Significant weight gain is a problematic side effect of treatment with the antipsychotic drug olanzapine (OLA). Previous studies in rats suggest that one of the contributing factors is an impairment in satiation that results in increased food intake. However, the mechanisms underlying this impairment in satiation remain largely unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we determined the effect of OLA on levels of leptin, insulin, ghrelin, cholecystokinin (CCK), glucagon-like peptide-1, peptide YY and amylin in male rats that had received a fixed amount of food. OLA did not affec

The role of amylin, a gut-brain axis hormone, in metabolic and neurological disorders.

Amylin, also known as islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), is a pancreatic β-cell peptide hormone involved in satiation and control food intake. It is also produced in smaller quantities by neurons, the gastrointestinal tract, and spinal ganglia. Numerous studies have revealed that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cognitive deficits exhibit IAPP deposits in the pancreas, brain, and blood vessels. IAPP has also been shown to exert neuroprotective effects against Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cognitive impairments. The objective of this review paper is to provide recent information

Striatal signaling tracks naturalistic short-term fluctuations in hunger-satiety.

The neuromodulator dopamine is integral to feeding behavior, believed to modulate food pursuit and satiety. Here, we examine how dopamine and spiny projection neurons (SPNs) signaling in the nucleus accumbens changes during consumption as animals transition from hunger to satiety in naturalistic feeding. Both dopamine and SPNs transiently increase during food approach; however, the magnitude of this approach-related increase diminishes across progressive pellet ingestion, reflecting short-term satiation. Fasting dissociates the regulation of meal size and frequency-- termination and initiation

Association between left-handedness and gastrointestinal symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have shown associations between left-handedness and several chronic diseases such as bronchial asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. Perceptual responses within the brain-gut axis play a crucial role in the development of the cardinal symptoms of functional gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, including dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The aim of this study was to determine the association between left-handedness and GI symptoms or diseases. METHODS: 2,447 Japanese who underwent a routine health check-up were asked to complete a self-report questionnaire re

Vagal mediation of GLP-1's effects on food intake and glycemia.

Nutrient stimulation of the enteroendocrine L-cells induces the release of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), an incretin and satiating peptide. Due to its short half-life, meal-induced GLP-1's effects on food intake and glycemia are likely to be mediated in part by a paracrine signaling mechanism near the site of release. Early and recent findings from vagus nerve lesion studies scrutinized in this review strongly support an important role of the vagus nerve in mediating GLP-1's effects. Peripheral GLP-1 or GLP-1R agonist treatment failed to elicit the full satiating effects and maintain gl

Implicit and explicit reward learning in chronic nicotine use.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tobacco use is related to specific neurobiological alterations in the dopaminergic brain reward system that can be termed "reward deficiency syndrome" in dependent nicotine consumers. The close linkage of dopaminergic activity and reward learning led us to expect implicit and explicit reward learning deficits in dependent compared to non-smokers. Smokers who maintain a less regular, occasional use may also, to a lesser extent, show implicit reward learning deficits. The purpose of our study was to examine the behavioral effects of the neurobiological alterations on reward r

Good taste or gut feeling? A new method in rats shows oro-sensory stimulation and gastric distention generate distinct and overlapping brain activation patterns.

Satiation is influenced by a variety of signals including gastric distention and oro-sensory stimulation. Here we developed a high-field (9.4 T) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) protocol to test how oro-sensory stimulation and gastric distention, as induced with a block-design paradigm, affect brain activation under different states of energy balance in rats. Repeated tasting of sucrose induced positive and negative fMRI responses in the ventral tegmental area and septum, respectively, and gradual neural activation in the anterior insula and the brain stem nucleus of the solitary t
