Evaluation of various solvent systems for lipid extraction from wet microalgal biomass and its effects on primary metabolites of lipid-extracted biomass.

Microalgae have tremendous potential to grow rapidly, synthesize, and accumulate lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. The effects of solvent extraction of lipids on other metabolites such as proteins and carbohydrates in lipid-extracted algal (LEA) biomass are crucial aspects of algal biorefinery approach. An effective and economically feasible algae-based oil industry will depend on the selection of suitable solvent/s for lipid extraction, which has minimal effect on metabolites in lipid-extracted algae. In current study, six solvent systems were employed to extract lipids from dry and wet bi

Development of reliable quantitative structure-toxicity relationship models for toxicity prediction of benzene derivatives using semiempirical descriptors.

The Health and environmental hazards of benzene and nitrobenzene (NB) derivatives have remained a topic of interest of researchers. In silico methods for prediction of toxicity of chemicals have proved their worth in accurate forecast of environmental as well as health toxicity and are strongly recommended by regulatory authorities. Two quantitative structure-toxicity relationship (QSTR) models explaining Scenedesmus obliquus toxicity trends among 39 benzene derivatives and Tetrahymena pyriformis toxicity of 103 NB and 392 benzene derivatives are developed using semiempirical quantum chemical

Engineering starch-based matrices: comparative impacts of conventional hydrocolloids versus novel algal biomass on potato purée.

Hydrocolloids are traditionally used to structure starch-based foods, yet demand is rising for sustainable, nutrient-dense matrices with enhanced bioactivity. To the best of our knowledge, this study is among the first to characterize algal fortification effect on potato purée, providing a novel route to develop starch-based foods with enhanced nutritional and functional properties. Light microscopy, colorimetry, texturometry and rheology were performed. Chlorella vulgaris at 3% exhibited the strongest water immobilization (aw = 0.27 ± 0.01), suggesting a possible mechanism of physical cellula

MLSE machine learning algorithm-assisted priority screening of aquatic toxicity risk of DBPs and the guidance of environmental regulations.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are ubiquitously formed during the water treatment processes. Due to the widespread occurrence, an urgent need exists to conduct systematic research on their aquatic toxicity risk and their toxicity mechanisms. In this study, an assessment system of a total of 833 DBPs aquatic toxicity risk was developed by integrating three organisms: Scenedesmus sp., Daphnia magna, and Danio rerio. Molecular docking was performed for all DBPs to quantify their potential aquatic toxicity. Four molecular structure-guided multi-learner stacking ensemble (MLSE) models were constru

Differential impact of toxic twins, anthracene and phenanthrene, on photosynthetic performance, oxidative stress, and bioremediation potential of microalgae.

This study compares the physiological and biochemical effects of 3-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Anthracene (ANT, linear arrangement) and Phenanthrene (PHE, angular arrangement), on microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus acutus. The findings revealed that PHE exerted significant toxic effects on algal growth and photosynthetic parameters, including electron transport rate of PSII [ETR(II)] and quantum yield of PSII [Y(II)], in both species. Additionally, it significantly influenced the regulation of the non-photochemical quenching mechanism [Y(NPQ) and Y(NO)], which was

Methods to protein and peptide extraction from microalgae: a systematic review.

Currently, there is a demand for protein sources that do not use soil management or animal breeding. Among these sources we highlight the microorganisms, such cyanobacteria and microalgae, which have a simple growth using light, CO2, water and some mineral salts to generate high protein production. The extraction of these proteins depends on the method used. The most used methods for extracting bio-functional proteins are mechanical, chemical and enzymatic. The aim of this work is to analyze the protein extraction methods in microalgae using Scielo, ScienceDirect and NCBI (PubMed) electronic d

Characterisation of the volatile profile of microalgae and cyanobacteria using solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.

Microalgae and microalgae-derived ingredients are one of the top trends in the food industry. However, consumers' acceptance and purchase intention of a product will be largely affected by odour and flavour. Surprisingly, the scientific literature present a very limited number of studies on the volatile composition of microalgae and cyanobacteria. In order to fill the gap, the main objective of the present study was to elucidate the volatile composition of seven microalgal and cyanobacterial strains from marine and freshwaters, with interest for the food industry while establishing its potenti

Effects of Carbon Quantum Dots on Aquatic Environments: Comparison of Toxicity to Organisms at Different Trophic Levels.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have high hydrophilicity, high cell permeability, and are frequently used in water-based and biorelated applications, yet studies concerning the ecological risks of CQDs in aquatic environments are largely insufficient. In the present study, the toxicity of CQDs to zebrafish ( Danio rerio), zooplankton ( Daphnia magna), and phytoplankton ( Scenedesmus obliquus) were assessed for the first time. The results indicated that CQDs (up to 200 mg/L) could be depurated by D. rerio with negligible toxicity. In comparison, CQDs induced mortality and immobility in D. magna with

Integrating electro-Fenton and microalgae for the sustainable management of real food processing wastewater.

The present study demonstrates, for the first time, the feasibility of a two-step process consisting of Electro-Fenton (EF) followed by microalgae to treat highly loaded real food processing wastewater along with resource recovery. In the first step, EF with a carbon felt cathode and Ti/RuO2-IrO2 anode was applied at different current densities (3.16 mA cm-2, 4.74 mA cm-2 and 6.32 mA cm-2) to decrease the amount of organic matter and turbidity and enhance biodegradability. In the second step, the EF effluents were submitted to microalgal treatment for 15 days using a mixed culture dominated by

Comparative assessment of phytoremediation using Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Ipomoea aquatica floating beds for phytoplankton community restoration and microcystin-LR removal in eutrophic pond water.

Ecological floating beds (EFBs) represent a sustainable, nature-based solution for remediating eutrophic waters, with plant species selection being a critical determinant of treatment performance. This study assessed the remediation potential of three floating macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Ipomoea aquatica under cyanobacterial bloom stress. Results demonstrated that all three species significantly reduced concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus, with I. aquatica exhibiting the highest removal efficiencies (93.7% for both nitrogen and phosphorus). Notably,

Comparative study of CO₂ nanobubbles and macrobubbles: Effects on water chemistry, microalgal growth, and carbon utilization.

Algal biotechnology presents a cost-effective approach for simultaneous carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture and bioproduct generation. However, conventional gas delivery approaches (e.g., macro and micro-bubbles) suffer from low gas-liquid mass transfer efficiency (KL·a) and CO2 utilization. This study investigated the aqueous properties of CO₂ nanobubbles and impacts on the CO2 mass transfer, utilization, and microalgal growth. Results revealed that direct injection of CO2 nanobubbles in DI water achieved rapid CO2 saturation (1.48 ± 0.08 g·L-1) and nanobubble density (1.5 × 108 particles·mL-1) with

Evaluating the efficacy of an algae-based treatment to mitigate elicitation of antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotics in the effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) may create selective pressures to induce antibiotic resistance in bacteria downstream. This study evaluates ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal by a freshwater alga, Scenedesmus dimorphus, to assess the efficacy of algae-based tertiary treatment in reducing effluent-induced CIP resistance. Results show significant CIP removal in light-exposed samples without algae and experimental algae (EA) samples: 53% and 93%, respectively, over 144 h. A residual antibiotic potency assay reveals that untreated CIP is significantly more gro

Analysis of temperature-jump chlorophyll fluorescence induction in plants.

A newly observed general chlorophyll fluorescence induction effect in plants is described. Fluorescence yield can rise through as many as four different phases (alpha, beta, gamma, ) in the dark, when intact cells or leaves are rapidly heated (within approx. 2.5 s) from 20 to 40-50 degrees C. An analysis of this temperature-jump fluorescence induction in Scenedesmus obliquus leads to the following: 1. Phase alpha is due to removal of S-quenching and appears to be related to heat deactivation of the water-splitting enzyme system. With prolonged heating, irreversibility of alpha upon recooling r
