Schistosomiasis is traditionally classified into an acute and a chronic phase, although a precise temporal distinction between the two phases has not been established. Lung involvement can be observed in both phases. We previously reported seven cases of pulmonary lesions due to chronic schistosomiasis in African immigrants. All cases were documented with CT scans and demonstrated complete resolution after treatment with praziquantel. Moreover, another case showed spontaneous disappearance of the nodule before treatment with praziquantel. These findings are similar to those observed in the acu…

Acute myelopathy is increasingly being recognized as a common neurological complication of schistosomiasis. Schistosome eggs reach the spinal cord either as egg emboli or as eggs produced by ectopic worms. This leads to inflammatory reaction and granuloma formation around the eggs. Patients with spinal schistosomiasis may not have clinical evidence of schistosomiasis. The typical clinical picture is that of lumbar pain preceded by other symptoms by hours or up to 3 weeks. Patients may present with paraparesis, urinary retention or paraplegia. Definitive diagnosis of spinal cord schistosomiasis…

The authors report a case of ectopic cutaneous schistosomiasis in a 35 year-old female who presented clustered reddish macules and papules on the left buttock. The diagnosis was not suspected during clinical evaluation and required visualization of Schistosoma mansoni eggs on sections of tissue.

Acute pulmonary schistosomiasis affects non-immune individuals returning from endemic areas. Pathogenesis is not well understood. We report a case of acute pulmonary schistosomiasis in which lung biopsy was done 10 weeks after exposure and it identified the presence of schistosomal ovum surrounded by granuloma.

OBJECT: The authors performed a study to investigate the clinical manifestations, treatment strategies, and possible pathogenesis of conus medullaris schistosomiasis.
METHODS: Six cases collected from the authors' experience and four cases reported in the literature were studied retrospectively for clinical manifestations, treatment outcomes, and prognosis. All patients experienced progressive lower-extremity weakness and functional bowel and bladder impairment. Although the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging results suggested the presence of a conus medullaris tumor, schistosomiasis was diagnos…

Schistosomosis are parasitic diseases caused by blood flukes of the Schistosoma genus. The pathology of schistosomosis is mostly brought about by ova trapped in the tissues. In the liver, granuloma around ova eventually trigger periportal fibrosis and portal hypertension. In S. mansoni infection, the infection intensity and the onset of liver fibrosis are under distinct genetic control. Liver fibrosis is the main cause of death in the 20 millions individuals suffering from chronic schistosomosis. However, liver fibrosis is reversible if antischistosomal drugs are administered before the onset

Schistosoma haemtobium infection in travelers from endemic areas is usually asymptomatic, or presents with hematuria. Uncommon manifestations include neurological syndromes, genital dysaesthesias and watery or blood stained semen. This organism also causes disease within all structures of the female genital tract because of communications between pelvic venous complexes, and can occur long after return home. Schistosomiasis may not be suspected, resulting in delays in diagnosis and treatment. We present two cases which illustrate the diverse nature of this condition.

Schistosoma mansoni is common in Nigeria as well as in other countries of West Africa (Edington, 1979). The eggs are laid in the small venules of the submucosal layer of the intestinal wall and pass out usually in the faeces but some may enter the blood stream to be found in any organ of the body (Edington et al., 1975). However, a careful search of the available literature failed to reveal any report of schistosomiasis in the ear and hence it was decided to publish this rare case.

Two cases of cutaneous schistosomiasis due to ectopic ova have recently been seen. Both patients presented with abdominal papular lesions, which were found on biopsy to contain schistosoma ova. To reach these abdominal sites mature worms probably migrate from the portal circulation to the paraumbilical veins, where they anastomose with veins of the caval system.

A 54-year-old Canadian presented with a 1-month history of painless swelling in the right testis. The diagnosis was thought to be a sperm granuloma, a leiomyoma, or an adenomatoid tumour of the epididymis; histologic examination, however, revealed evidence of schistosomiasis, probably due to Schistosoma haematobium. Solitary schistosomiasis of the epididymis has been reported previously in only two cases. Epididymal schistosomiasis has never been diagnosed preoperatively because it is so rare, but even if it were suspected preoperatively and confirmed by biopsy, chemotherapy alone would not pr…

There were 240 newly advanced schistosomiasis patients in Huangshan City from 2004 to 2011. All the patients were clinically diagnosed and mainly distributed in the countries which were once heavy endemic areas in history. Most of the patients were diagnosed in 2007 and 2008, and those aged more than 60 years accounted for 79.16% of the total cases. Among all the cases, ascites type and splenomegaly type accounted for 66.25% and 31.66% respectively. In conclusion, there are still newly advanced schistosomiasis cases in areas of schistosomiasis transmission interruption, so the monitoring, diag…

Acute schistosomiasis is a clinical type of schistosomiasis with severe symptoms. The number of acute schistosomiasis cases is not only a sensitive indicator to assess the endemic situation and control effects, but also an important indicator to define schistosomiasis outbreaks and evaluate the achievements of infection control or transmission control. Acute schistosomiasis control is therefore of great significance to achieve the goal of schistosomiasis elimination in China. This paper analyzes the features and causes of acute schistosomiasis, and proposes some suggestions for future acute sc…
