The filamentous basidiomycete Ceriporia lacerata, an agent of white rot on wood, has never been reported in human disease and its clinical significance is not yet known. We describe 4 patients with respiratory diseases where C. lacerata was implicated in a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from saprobic colonization to fungal pneumonia. The isolates did not show the morphological characteristics that facilitate recognition of filamentous basidiomycetes, such as the presence of clamp connections, spicules along hyphae, or fruiting bodies. The identity of the mold was confirmed by

BACKGROUND: Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is an allergic pulmonary disease characterized by a hypersensitivity reaction to Aspergillus species colonizing the airways. The clinical characteristics of ABPA may differ depending on genetic and environmental background. We performed a nationwide survey to determine the clinical characteristics of ABPA in Japan.
METHODS: In 2013, a questionnaire on physician-diagnosed ABPA/allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis was sent to 903 medical centers specializing in respiratory or allergic diseases. Cases fulfilling the following criteria were

Schizophillum commune is an environmental fungus rarely causing human infections of diverse nature. Sinusitis occurs in immunocompromised persons and seldom in healthy subjects. Though easily isolated, the lack of awareness of its virulence is a bottleneck in the diagnosis of this infection. We report the first case of S. commune sinusitis with nasal polyps in an immunocompetent male from the sub-Himalayan region. The computerized tomography scan findings established the clinical diagnosis, and causative agent was confirmed as S. commune. A white, woolly mold with septate, hyaline hyphae and c

Mushrooms have long been used in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where they play an important role in promoting overall health and well-being. However, the therapeutic benefits of mushrooms have made this group of macrofungi a significant part of traditional medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia and China. Across the globe, cancer is the leading cause of death. Powerful anti-cancer medications known as traditional chemotherapeutic agents treat this dangerous disease. However, patients are always accompanied by immunosuppression, increasing the risk of tumor return and mortality. Identif

Renewable and biodegradable materials have attracted broad attention as alternatives to existing conventional plastics, which have caused serious environmental problems. Collagen is a potential material for developing versatile film due to its biosafety, renewability, and biodegradability. However, it is still critical to overcome the low mechanical, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the collagen film for food packaging applications. To address these limitations, we developed a new technology to prepare composite film by using collagen and fungal-modified APL (alkali pretreatment liq

Although mushrooms are widely used for nutraceutical purposes, post-harvest storage is extremely crucial to avoid degradation and quality reduction in fresh mushrooms. Drying treatments are commonly applied in the mushroom industry to extend shelf life. Drying may cause instability of food quality and antioxidant parameters due to unsuitable drying temperatures. Therefore, in this research a common set of temperatures typically used by mushroom growers was applied (50°C, 60°C, 70°C) to Ganoderma lucidum, Lignosus rhinocerus, Auricularia auricula-judae, and Schizophyllum commune to analyze colo

OBJECTIVES: Knee synovitis is a highly prevalent and potentially curable condition for knee pain; however, its pathogenesis remains unclear. We sought to assess the associations of the gut fungal microbiota and the fungi-bacteria correlation network with knee synovitis.
METHODS: Participants were derived from a community-based cross-sectional study. We performed an ultrasound examination of both knees. A knee was defined as having synovitis if its synovium was ≥4 mm and/or Power Doppler (PD) signal was within the knee synovium area (PD synovitis). We collected faecal specimens from each parti

Background/Objectives: Filamentous basidiomycetes are environmental fungi that rarely cause human infection but are increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. However, their clinical epidemiology and antifungal management data remain limited. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with filamentous basidiomycetes isolated from clinical specimens at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thailand, between 2019 and 2025. Species identification was performed using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) or D1/D2 ribosomal DNA sequencing.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) play a key role in plant establishment and stress tolerance, yet their diversity and functional roles in mining restoration systems remain insufficiently resolved. In the present study, we investigated the culturable fungal community associated with ectomycorrhizal root tips of Pinus massoniana in bauxite rehabilitation areas, with particular attention to their symbiotic capacity and ecological roles. Fungi were isolated from root tips and sporocarps, identified using ITS sequencing, and evaluated through seedling inoculation experiments. A total of 25 operational t

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) has traditionally relied widely on Rosenberg's criteria, which emphasize immunologic responses while overlooking the investigation of mucous plugs as a primary criterion. Therefore, the characteristics of biopsy-proven ABPM require further elucidation. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of biopsy-proven ABPM and address whether full compliance with clinical criteria, such as the presence of asthma, and certain laboratory findings is necessary to establish a diagnosis of ABPM.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis/mycosis (ABPA/ABPM) is an immunologically mediated pulmonary disorder triggered by the colonization of filamentous fungi in the airways of patients with asthma or cystic fibrosis, leading to type I and III hypersensitivity responses, eosinophilic mucus plug formation, and central bronchiectasis. Over the past decade, advances in basic and clinical research have substantially reshaped the understanding and management of this disease. Although Aspergillus species, particularly Aspergillus fumigatus, remain the predominant causative fungi, epidemiological s

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of aging that imposes a heavy medical and socioeconomic burden. Its multifactorial pathology-including amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation, tauopathy, and chronic neuroinflammation-lacks effective disease-modifying treatments. Recent studies highlight the gut-brain axis, specifically the intestinal mycobiome (fungal community), as a novel factor in AD. In this review, we summarize evidence on gut fungi in AD. Altered gut fungal profiles have been reported in AD patients, including enrichment of Candida tropicalis and Schizophyllum co

Nonsporulating molds (NSMs), especially basidiomycetes, have predominantly been reported as human pathogens responsible for allergic and invasive disease. Their conventional identification is problematic, as many isolates remain sterile in culture. Thus, inconclusive culture reports might adversely affect treatment decisions. The clinical significance of NSMs in pulmonary mycoses is poorly understood. We sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and D1/D2 domain of the larger subunit (LSU) of 52 NSMs isolated from respiratory specimens. The basidiomycetes were the predominant NSMs

BACKGROUND: Colonization by filamentous fungi in the bronchi is an essential pathogenic component of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis/mycosis (ABPA/ABPM). Mycological or pathological examination of mucus plugs and bronchial lavage fluid directly recovered from the lower airways using bronchoscopy may improve the diagnosis of ABPA/ABPM.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the usefulness of mycological and pathological examinations of bronchoscopic specimens in the diagnosis of ABPA/ABPM.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed cases of ABPA/ABPM identified in a Japanese nationwide survey c

The basidiospores of most Agaricomycetes are ballistospores. They are propelled off from their basidia at maturity when Buller's drop develops at high humidity at the hilar spore appendix and fuses with a liquid film formed on the adaxial side of the spore. Spores are catapulted into the free air space between hymenia and fall then out of the mushroom's cap by gravity. Here we show for 66 different species that ballistospores from mushrooms can be attracted against gravity to electrostatic charged plastic surfaces. Charges on basidiospores can influence this effect. We used this feature to sel

Ticks are hematophagous arthropods that parasitize livestock, humans, and wild animals, posing serious threats to public health worldwide. Diverse pathogens have been discovered in ticks, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and filarial nematodes; however, ticks also harbor a variety of fungal microbes, which remain largely unexplored. In this study, we isolated and identified culturable fungi associated with ticks collected on cattle and goats in Yunnan Province, China. Of the 1730 ticks obtained, 1690 were identified as Rhipicephalus microplus, and only 40 as Haemaphysalis longicornis via

The human oral microbiome is a complex, dynamic ecosystem critically involved in maintaining oral health and contributing to systemic well-being. Many bacteria and fungi are involved in oral cavities such as Penicillium, Rhodotorula, Saccharomycetales, Streptococcus, Veillonella, Neisseria, Actinomyces, and Schizophyllum. Disruption of microbial homeostasis, or dysbiosis, underpins a wide spectrum of oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal disease, endodontic infections, and mucosal conditions. Recent advances in microbiome research have elucidated the mechanisms by which pathogeni

BACKGROUND: Since decades, fungi are leveraged in biotechnology to produce high-value compounds used in multiple economic sectors. Strain and process optimisation is based on a comprehensive understanding of the production organism on the cellular and molecular level. Among three antifungal protein families in fungi, consisting of small cysteine-stabilised proteins, it has been shown that, for some family members, bioactivities are also associated with additional functions in their hosts, e.g., carbon metabolism, autophagy, or asexual development. These proteins are interesting as alternative

Fruiting bodies (sporocarps, sporophores or basidiomata) of mushroom-forming fungi (Agaricomycetes) are among the most complex structures produced by fungi. Unlike vegetative hyphae, fruiting bodies grow determinately and follow a genetically encoded developmental program that orchestrates their growth, tissue differentiation and sexual sporulation. In spite of more than a century of research, our understanding of the molecular details of fruiting body morphogenesis is still limited and a general synthesis on the genetics of this complex process is lacking. In this paper, we aim at a comprehen
