Awards, keynotes and gender equity in coastal geoscience and engineering: A 50-year perspective.

Awards and invited keynotes are critical markers of scholarly achievement that shape visibility, career advancement and retention in academia. Yet extensive evidence across science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine shows that women remain underrepresented among recipients of these honors. To evaluate equity within the coastal geosciences and engineering (CGE) community, we compiled the gender distribution of 1,138 awards and invited keynotes granted by professional societies and conferences relevant to CGE over the past 50 years. We additionally reviewed publicly available nom

Climate change and water-related diseases: a bibliometric, knowledge map, topic modeling, and content analysis.

This study employs a multi-method approach - bibliometric analysis, knowledge mapping, BERTopic modeling, and content analysis - to map the evolving research landscape on climate change and water-related diseases (WRDs) from 1995 to 2025. Our analysis reveals a marked increase in publications post-2007, peaking in 2024, yet this growth is characterized by significant geographic concentration. The United States, China, and the United Kingdom dominate scholarly output, while a centralized collaboration network sidelines many high-risk regions, creating a critical evidence gap. Thematic mapping s

Suicide and self-harm in the age of generative artificial intelligence: The case of ChatGPT and rise of suicide-related lawsuits.

Self-harm and suicide trends have taken a new turn in the era of GenAI and communicative chatbots. Recent OpenAI's own report suggests that 1.2 million weekly ChatGPT users appear to be expressing suicidal thoughts, and 80,000 users are potentially experiencing mania and psychosis. At the same time, OpenAI and other AI companies are facing lawsuits in several countries alleging that their chatbots encouraged vulnerable individuals to harm themselves. These lawsuits have sparked a growing scholarly debate about responsibility, safety, and the ethical use of chatbots in mental health services. G

One Hundred Years of Seeking Respectful Maternity Care: History and Evolution.

Growing awareness of poor maternal health outcomes and maternal health disparities in the United States has heightened urgency around the need to promote Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) as a fundamental tenet of obstetric/midwifery care and standardize efforts to improve safety, eliminate obstetric violence and racism, and optimize health outcomes for all birthing people. The historical context of prior and contemporary perspectives around childbirth influences our understanding of RMC and are shaped by varying scholarly, clinical, and community standards (e.g., religion, human rights, governm

Occupational Contact Dermatitis in Firefighters.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) emerges as a salient concern within the context of firefighters, a professional cohort routinely exposed to an array of hazardous substances as an intrinsic facet of their occupational responsibilities. This continual skin exposure to a spectrum of allergenic and irritant agents engenders an elevated predisposition to OCD among firefighters. Notably, the ramifications of OCD in the domain of occupational health assume substantial import, contributing significantly to the prevalence of work-related dermatological maladies and consequential productivity decr

Unbridled Threat of Gas Gangrene in a Patient With Uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus: A Compelling Case Report of Clostridium perfringens Infection.

Clostridium perfringens, a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, is well-known for its association with gas gangrene, a severe and rapidly progressing infection characterized by tissue gas production and necrosis. In this case report, we present the instance of a 64-year-old male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus who developed a C. perfringens-related infection following a traumatic foot wound. The report emphasizes the critical significance of early diagnosis and aggressive treatment in C. perfringens infections, particularly in patients with underlying risk factors. Detailed accounts of

Displacement after disaster: Challenges and opportunities responding to Puerto Rican evacuees in Central Florida after Hurricane Maria.

Major disasters often displace populations, requiring coordinated response efforts from governmental and voluntary organizations to support and assist an influx of evacuees. Despite the frequency and significance of this occurrence, this aspect of disaster management has received limited scholarly attention, with research predominantly focusing on response and recovery at the impacted disaster sites. This study investigates disaster management and support offered to Puerto Rican evacuees arriving in Central Florida after Hurricane Maria. A multiagency resource center (MARC) was established at

Embodied social exclusion: habit memory and the reproduction of caste in Dalit autobiographies.

Casteism stratifies people in India into hierarchical ranks, imposing customs, rituals, and traditions in accordance with the division of labour. This systematic continuity of casteism preserves memory that is passed down from generation to generation, not merely by ideology but also embodied by mnemonic practices. Dalits are the most afflicted community by both ideological and habitual oppression of the upper caste. Beyond legal abolition of untouchability, it persists as a system of descent-based ethnic inequality. This study explores autobiographies of Omprakash Valmiki's Joothan (1997) and

The role of artificial intelligence and bureaucracy in frugal innovation for social and environmental performance: A structuration theory approach.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has played a crucial role in decision-making within public departments. The impact of AI on the discretion exercised by public officials and bureaucrats has attracted significant scholarly attention. Despite the growing body of literature, there remains a need to explore how digital discretion and social structures shape innovation, particularly in disadvantaged communities facing resource constraints, limited accessibility, and complex societal issues. In such contexts, AI-assisted decision-making by public officials can promote frugal innovation, contributing to

From innovation to implementation: a global scoping review of artificial intelligence applications, governance, and challenges in humanitarian contexts.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being explored as a tool for supporting humanitarian action through hazards and crisis prediction, real time monitoring of evolving crisis conditions and humanitarian needs, resource allocation, and decision-making. However, evidence on how AI is implemented, evaluated, and governed across humanitarian contexts remains fragmented. In this scoping review, we mapped the global evidence on the application of AI in humanitarian settings, including its distribution across the emergency management cycle, deployment maturity, and evaluation. We

A tale of two stories: COVID-19 and disability. A critical scoping review of the literature on the effects of the pandemic among athletes with disabilities and para-athletes.

The still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted athletes, and, in particular, para-athletes and athletes with disabilities. However, there is no scholarly appraisal on this topic. Therefore, a critical scoping review of the literature was conducted. We were able to retrieve sixteen relevant studies. The sample size ranged from 4 to 183. Most studies were observational, cross-sectional, and questionnaire-based surveys, two studies were interventional, and two were longitudinal. One study was a technical feasibility study. Almost all studies were conducted as single-country studies

Empathetic Reporting Surrounding the Violence Against LGBTIQ+ Activists in Russia (The Case of Dmitry Chizhevsky and Anna Prutskova).

This article serves two interconnected purposes. First, it examines media coverage of the violent attack on LGBTIQ+ activists Dmitry Chizhevsky and Anna Prutskova at the St. Petersburg community center LaSky on 3 November 2013. Two masked assailants entered the center and opened fire, severely injuring Dmitry and wounding Anna. The attack occurred amid heightened public debates surrounding the "gay propaganda" law, which intensified hostility toward LGBTIQ+ individuals. This study critically assesses how Russian media framed the violence, shaping public perception of activists at the forefront

The field of medical anthropology in Social Science & Medicine.

Conceptually and methodologically, medical anthropology is well-positioned to support a "big-tent" research agenda on health and society. It fosters approaches to social and structural models of health and wellbeing in ways that are critically reflective, cross-cultural, people-centered, and transdisciplinary. In this review article, we showcase these four main characteristics of the field, as featured in Social Science & Medicine over the last fifty years, highlighting their relevance for an international and interdisciplinary readership. First, the practice of critical inquiry in ethnographi

Two operationalizations of a single construct: Overlap between borderline personality disorder and the level of personality functioning.

Scholarly debate continues regarding whether borderline personality disorder (BPD) represents a distinct categorical disorder or primarily reflects elevated levels of personality functioning (LPFs) as conceptualized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth ed., Alternative Model of Personality Disorders. The present study examined the overlap between measures of LPF and BPD by analyzing archival data from 289 adults receiving community-based mental health treatment. Participants completed both clinician-rated and self-report measures assessing BPD symptoms, LPF, and

Determinants of social health in later life: the roles of family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging has intensified scholarly attention towards the social dimensions of well-being in later life. While previous research has largely emphasized physical health and economic security, social health-reflecting individuals' ability to maintain meaningful relationships and social participation-remains comparatively underexplored, particularly among older adults in rural communities. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates how family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being contribute to social health in later life. METHODS: We conduct

Recreational Drug use at Sports Events in the US and UK.

Recreational drug use among sports fans has received relatively little scholarly attention. Nonetheless, understanding this landscape is crucial to better understand fan behaviors and attitudes, as well as to support fan communities through effective harm reduction and educational initiatives. Addressing this gap, we surveyed fans in the US (football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey) and the UK (soccer, rugby, cricket) to assess the prevalence, correlates, contexts, and motivations behind drug use at major sporting events (N = 2,556). Fans reported more drug use than the general population, w
