Oviposition by screwworm flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) on contact with host fluids.

Factor affecting oviposition by screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), contacting different host fluids were examined in a laboratory bioassay. Fresh bovine blood, which does not release the attractive odors involved in host finding, nevertheless stimulated as many or more females to oviposit than did the other fluids tested. These other fluids included attractive fluid from screwworm-infected wounds (a favored oviposition site in nature) and cultures of Providencia rettgeri (a bacterium implicated in attractant production). Oviposition did not vary with batch of fresh blood or f

Influence of attractants on behavior of screwworms (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a tropical wet forest in Costa Rica.

In a mark-release-recapture study, sheep wounds and rotted liver were used as attractants to study movements of the screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), in a Costa Rican tropical wet forest in the wet season. When sites were monitored for less than 1 h, liver attracted between 3 and 12.2 times more flies of both sexes than did wounds, but proportionately fewer gravid and parous females. Only 24.6% of females marked at liver sites were recaptured; seldom (3.1%) did they visit sheep wounds. Females originally marked at sheep wounds remained at the study site longer, visited both sh

Nosocomial nasal myiasis.

Sixty-five fly maggots were retrieved from the nasal cavity of an unconscious 64-year-old man who had been admitted 18 days earlier with diabetic hyperosmolar coma. The larvae were identified as Cochliomyia macellaria, an organism commonly associated with myiasis in the United States. The clinical time sequence indicates that this infection was acquired in the hospital. This incident provides further evidence that immobile and debilitated patients are at risk to acquire myiasis.

Of cattle and humans: A narrative review on the re-emergence of the New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) and its threat to human health.

Following more than two decades of successful elimination of the New World screwworm fly from Central and North America, new outbreaks emerged in Panama in 2023, initially affecting livestock, and rapidly spreading northward to impact not only livestock but also companion animals and humans. Forest degradation, increasing cattle density, and climate-driven shifts in the fly's distribution-particularly its recolonization of regions it historically occupied-are converging to expose critical gaps in preparedness and cross-sector coordination. In this review, we examine the drivers of screwworm re

Demographic and historical processes influencing Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) population structure across South America.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we investigated the genetic variability and population structure of the New World screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax. We tested the hypothesis that the species exhibits a center-periphery distribution of genetic variability, with higher genetic diversity in central populations (e.g., Brazil) and lower diversity in peripheral populations. METHODS: Using microsatellite markers, we analyzed larvae collected from infested livestock across South America. The larvae were collected directly from various wound sites to ensure a broad representation of genetic diversity.

Wound myiasis: the role of entodermoscopy.

Although wound or traumatic myiasis is common in tropical countries, only recently cases associated with underlying dermatoses, such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis, have been reported. We describe a patient with seborrheic dermatitis and an ulcerated lesion on the scalp, in which the dermatological examination with the aid of dermoscopy allowed the identification of larvae (maggots) compatible with infestation by Cochliomyia hominivorax. Treatment was performed with oral and topical ivermectin, followed by manual extraction of the larvae.

Tropical dermatology: Venomous arthropods and human skin: Part I. Insecta.

Although many tropical insects carry infectious diseases, cutaneous injury can occur by other mechanisms, for example erucism (envenomation by caterpillars) or lepidopterism (dermatitis from moths). Pararama is a unique form of erucism seen in workers in contact with rubber trees in the Amazon, and it is caused by Premolis larvae, resulting in progressive periarticular fibrosis, ankylosis, and the loss of articulation. Ants and aquatic insects of the Belostomatidae family can cause painful bites and stings. Anaphylactic shock and death can result from the venom of bees and wasps. Beetles can c

History of the screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) eradication in the Eastern Hemisphere.

The screwworm caused by Cochliomyia Hominivorax, attacking warm-blooded animals and man, was discovered for the first time in the history outside of American continent, in the Eastern Hemisphere. After confirming the occurrence of this horrible myiasis in North Africa in 1989, Tripoli sheep import quarantine was traced as primary outbreak locality. The myiasis spread rapidly invading vast territory during several months. The invaded territory of 25000 km2 with more than 2.7 million domestic animals was identified between Mediterranean Sea and Sahara desert threatening territories in Africa and

Responses of fertile and sterile screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) flies to bovine blood inoculated with bacteria originating from screwworm-infested animal wounds.

ABSTRACT A simple bioassay system was developed to study locomotory and ovipositional responses of screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), flies to bovine blood inoculated with eight species of coliform bacteria that were isolated from screwworm-infested animal wounds. When exposed to odors from bacteria-inoculated blood which was incubated for 72 h at 37 degrees C, approximately 50% of 7- and 10-d-old gravid females landed on the blood by the end of 15 min test exposure. Only 17% of 7-d-old reproductively sterile females (from irradiated pupae) with previtellogenic ovaries and 2% of 4-

Vaccination against the Old World screwworm fly (Chrysomya bezziana).

Chrysomya bezziana is an endemic pest of livestock or a threat to livestock production in large areas of Africa, the Middle East, southern and south-east Asia and Australia. Its control is difficult. The feasibility of vaccinating against this pest has now been explored. In-vitro and in-vivo assays have been established. Using these assays, it has been shown that first instar larvae, third instar peritrophic membrane and cardia are all sources of material able to induce immunological reactions in sheep which lead to significant reductions in larval growth. In-vitro assays following vaccination

Efficacy of doramectin in the protection of neonatal calves and post-parturient cows against field strikes of Cochliomyia hominivorax.

Two studies were conducted in Latin America, one in Venezuela and one in Argentina, using a common protocol to investigate the efficacy of a single s.c. injection of doramectin in the prevention and control of field infestations of Cochliomyia hominivorax in newborn calves and post-parturient cows. In both experiments, pregnant cows were paired on the basis of their calving time. The first cow that calved was assigned to a medicated group, and both cow and calf were treated with doramectin. The cow received a dose of 200 micrograms kg-1 and the calf 1 ml of a 1% doramectin solution. The second

Prevention of cutaneous myiasis caused by screw worm larvae (Cochliomyia hominivorax) using ivermectin.

During March of 1991 and 1992, four trials were carried out in the central area of Argentina to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin in the prevention of myiasis caused by Cochliomya hominivorax larvae. In the first trial 24 steers were artificially wounded, in the second and third trial, 36 and 20 bull calves were castrated while in the fourth trial, 30 newborn calves were used. On day 0, half of the animals of each trial was treated with ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg) and the rest remained as untreated controls. None of the treated animals sustained a screw-worm larva infestation, but 3 of 12

Severe Oral Myiasis in an Elderly Man with Epilepsy Caused by the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Subtropical Ecuador.

Oral myiasis is a rare medical condition in which soft tissues of the oral cavity are invaded by the larvae (maggots) of several flies. We report a fatal case in a 75-year-old man from a subtropical rural region of Ecuador who presented to a public health center with respiratory distress, peripheral cyanosis, dyspnea, and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 9 of 15. The oral cavity emitted a fetid odor and contained bloody secretions with extensive larval invasion affecting the gingiva, lower lip, tongue, and soft palate. More than 300 larvae were manually extracted and morphologically identified as

Mating competitiveness of irradiated flies for screwworm fly eradication campaigns.

Should the screwworm fly invade Australia, the sterile insect technique (as used successfully overseas) is currently the only feasible method of eradication. Used in conjunction with chemical control methods, it relies on large numbers of factory-reared, sterilized males competing successfully with wild males for the wild females. However, laboratory and field studies have shown that the processes of mass rearing, irradiation and distribution seriously impair the competitiveness of the sterilized flies. This study collates and analyses the relatively sparse information on the relative mating c
