Autonomic neurotoxicity of jellyfish and marine animal venoms.

Venoms and poisons of jellyfish and other marine animals can induce damage to the human nervous and circulatory systems. Clues to the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of these lesions can be obtained from data of human envenomations and animal experimentation. Because many investigators are unaware that marine animal venoms have autonomic actions, this paper aims to elucidate the broad antagonistic or toxic effects these compounds have on the autonomic nervous system. Marine venoms can affect ion transport of particularly sodium and calcium, induce channels or pores in neural and muscu

Neurobiology of Polyorchis. I. Function of effector systems.

The electrical correlates of activity in the effector systems responsible for swimming, crumpling and postural changes have been recorded in the anthomedusan Polyorchis penicillatus. Motor spikes (pre-swim pulses), that initiate swimming contractions, appear without delay at distant sites on the inner nerve-ring in unstimulated preparations. Levels of Mg++ anaesthesia which block the neuromuscular junctions between PSP giant neurons and swimming muscle do not affect PSP activity. Swimming muscle potentials can be recorded from subumbrella and velar muscle sheets using extra- and intracellular

Dive Injury and Jellyfish Sting Case Study.

INTRODUCTION: Wildlife exposure is a risk that trained divers are fully aware of. Examples of hazardous wildlife that divers may encounter include, but are not limited to, sharks, coral, sponges, eels, and jellyfish. Encountering wildlife can lead to a diver panicking or being forced to surface rapidly or in an uncontrolled manner due to panic or avoidance of the hazard. This may increase the risk of decompression illness (DCI), mainly pulmonary overinflation syndrome (POIS). Injuries caused by hazardous aquatic wildlife can also be distracting, leading dive supervisors and/or medical personne

Development of an H2S-Associated Matrix Based on Rhizostoma pulmo Jellyfish Collagen: A Pilot Evaluation of Neuroprotective Effects and Cx43/p53 Regulation in Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury.

Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. To date, there are no clinically effective neuroprotective agents. Biomaterials that combine structural support for damaged tissue with a depot for therapeutic agents may represent a key solution to this problem. To evaluate the neuroprotective potential of a collagen matrix derived from the jellyfish Rhizostoma pulmo (R. pulmo) and modified with sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) as an hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor in a bioengineered platform for the treatment of severe TBI. Comprehensive characte

Characterization of Novel ACE-Inhibitory Peptides from Nemopilema nomurai Jellyfish Venom Hydrolysate: In Vitro and In Silico Approaches.

The venom of Nemopilema nomurai jellyfish represents a promising source of bioactive compounds with potential pharmacological applications. In our previous work, we identified two novel angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptides-IVGRPLANG (896.48 Da) and IGDEPRHQYL (1227.65 Da)-isolated from N. nomurai venom hydrolysates via papain digestion. In this study, we conducted a detailed biochemical and computational characterization of these peptides. The IC50 values were determined to be 23.81 µM for IVGRPLANG and 5.68 µM for IGDEPRHQYL. Jellyfish Polysaccharides for Wound Healing Applications.

Jellyfishes are considered a new potential resource in food, pharmaceutical and biomedical industries. In these latter cases, they are studied as source of active principles but are also exploited to produce marine collagen. In the present work, jellyfish skin polysaccharides (JSP) with glycosaminoglycan (GAG) features were extracted from Rhizostoma pulmo, a main blooming species of Mediterranean Sea, massively augmented by climate leaded "jellyfishication" of the sea. Two main fractions of R. pulmo JSP (RP-JSPs) were isolated and characterized, namely a neutral fraction (RP-JSP1) and a sulpha

Dermoscopic Findings of Jellyfish Stings Caused by Pelagia noctiluca.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Jellyfish are free-living members of the phylum Cnidaria who share a specialized stinging cell, the cnidocyte. Pelagia noctiluca is the most frequent and toxic jellyfish species found in the Balearic beaches and cnidocytes are arranged in pigmented clusters called "warts". Dermoscopy continues to expand its use much beyond the pigmentary lesions and to date, there is no data regarding dermoscopic findings in jellyfish stings. The aim of the present work was to study the dermoscopic findings of jellyfish stings in the island of Mallorca. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retr

Apoptosis-like cell death induced by nematocyst venom from Chrysaora helvola Brandt jellyfish and an in vitro evaluation of commonly used antidotes.

The present work investigated the in vitro cytotoxicity of nematocyst venom (NV) from Chrysaora helvola Brandt (C. helvola) jellyfish against human MCF-7 and CNE-2 tumor cell lines. Potent cytotoxicity was quantified using the MTT assay (LC50=12.07±3.13 and 1.6±0.22μg/mL (n=4), respectively). Apoptosis-like cell death was further confirmed using the LDH release assay and Annexin V/PI double staining-based flow cytometry analysis. However, only activation of caspase-4 was observed. It is possible that some caspase-independent pathways were activated by the NV treatment. Since no reference or an

Unilateral orbital inflammation in a child after a jellyfish sting to the lower extremities.

A 3-year 10-month-old child initially developed locally recurrent cutaneous eruptions within the first 2 weeks after sustaining a jellyfish sting to her lower extremities. After 5 asymptomatic weeks, she developed unilateral orbital inflammation that did not respond to systemic antibiotics, antihistamines, or steroids. Imaging revealed a rapidly growing mass of the right lacrimal gland. Urgent anterior orbitotomy was performed and the lacrimal gland was biopsied. Histopathologic diagnosis revealed sclerosing dacryodenitis consistent with orbital inflammatory syndrome and/or an immune response

Anticoagulant activity of Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) tentacle extract.

Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) tentacle extract was studied for its anticoagulant activity in vitro. The Jellyfish Tentacle Extract (JFTE) showed very strong fibrinogenolytic activity by cleaving Aα and Bβ chain of fibrinogen molecule. The fibrinogenolytic activity was found to be stronger than some snake venom derived anticoagulants. JFTE also completely liquefied fibrin clots in 24 h. JFTE was found to contain both high and low molecular weight proteins/peptides. The fibrinogenolysis appears to be caused by high molecular weight fractions of the extract. It has been also noted that PMSF sig

Assessment of mercury bioaccumulation within the pelagic food web of lakes in the western Great Lakes region.

While mercury is a health hazard to humans and wildlife, the biogeochemical processes responsible for its bioaccumulation in pelagic food webs are still being examined. Previous studies have indicated both "bottom-up" control of piscivorous fish Hg content through methylmercury.(MeHg) supply, as well as site-specific trophic factors. We evaluated ten studies from the western Great Lakes region to examine the similarity of MeHg trophic transfer efficiency within the pelagic food web, and assessed regional-scale spatial variability. Analyses of bioaccumulation and biomagnification factors betwee

Metacercariae of Lecithocladium (Trematoda: Hemiuridae) species in gelatinous zooplankters from Japanese coastal waters, with information of adult stages.

Between 2019 and 2025, metacercariae of the trematode genus Lecithocladium (Hemiuridae) were found in gelatinous zooplankters occurring in Japanese coastal waters. To identify these metacercariae and elucidate their life cycles, fish hosts were simultaneously examined for adult trematodes. Molecular analyses of the nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) regions, comparing them with adult Lecithocladium species from fish hosts, confirmed the metacercariae as those of L. magnacetabulum and L. cf. excisiforme. Metacercariae of L. magnacetabulum wer

Seabather's eruption: report of fourteen cases.

Seabather's eruption is a papulo-pruritic dermatitis caused by the nematocysts of the larvae of the jellyfish Linuche unguiculata retained in the clothing fibers. Previously reported in Brazil, this work describes fourteen cases that occurred in the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The new cases observed over a short period of time (the first half of January, 2012), at the height of the summer season, should alert health teams to possible epidemics on the coast of the state of Santa Catarina.

[Marine life envenomations: example in New Caledonia].

Marine life in the waters of New Caledonia is extraordinarily rich. However some of the animals inhabiting this wonderland are dangerous including a number of venomous species. A retrospective study conducted at the Territorial Hospital in Noumea for the three-year period between 1995 and 1998 showed that nearly 200 people/year were victims of envenomation by marine animals. Findings also indicated that the incidence of envenomation was rising as the practice of marine activities by the local population and tourists increased. Venomous species can be classified into 4 categories according to t

Moon Jellyfish Mucin and Collagen Attenuate Catabolic Activity in Chondrocytes but Show Limited Efficacy in an Osteoarthritis Rat Model.

Cartilage regeneration has long been a major challenge in the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Aiming to develop a simple outpatient treatment for knee OA, we have demonstrated the potential of combining Nomura's jellyfish mucin (JM) and hyaluronic acid (HA) to contribute to cartilage repair and regeneration in chondrocytes. In this study, we examined the effects of moon jellyfish JM and jellyfish collagen (JC) on chondrocytes. Polydactyly-derived chondrocytes (PDs), obtained from polydactyly surgery, were used. PDs were cultured in media supplemented with JM or JC, harvested, and evaluated b

Identification of Novel Anti-Inflammatory Peptides from Jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai Enzymatic Hydrolysate: An Integrated In Silico Analysis and Cellular Evaluation.

Inflammation plays a critical role in host defense and tissue repair; however, excessive or dysregulated inflammatory responses can lead to tissue damage and contribute to the progression of various diseases. Jellyfish-derived peptides have recently emerged as promising marine bioactive compounds with potential anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, three candidate anti-inflammatory peptides were identified from the enzymatic hydrolysate of Nemopilema nomurai through an integrated strategy combining LC-MS/MS-based peptidomics and multi-step in silico screening.
