Characterization of hybridization within a secondary contact region of the inshore fish, Bostrychus sinensis, in the East China Sea.

The northwest Pacific marginal seas are a primary center of phylogeographic and evolutionary research, because of their dynamic geographic history of falling and rising sea levels during the glaciations and interglaciations of the last one million years. Here we present new molecular and morphological data for geographic samples of the four-eyed sleeper (Bostrychus sinensis), which reinforce the evidence for secondary contact and hybridization between two phylogeographic lineages in the East China Sea. Specifically, we find that the secondary contact region is characterized by a low frequency

Incorporating learning into direct policy search for flood risk management.

Direct policy search (DPS) is a method for identifying optimal policies (i.e., rules) for managing a system in response to changing conditions. In this article, we introduce a new adaptive way to incorporate learning into DPS. The standard DPS approach identifies "robust" policies by optimizing their average performance over a large ensemble of future states of the world (SOW). Our approach exploits information gained over time, updating prior beliefs about the kind of SOW being experienced. We first run the standard DPS approach multiple times, but with varying sets of weights applied to the

Sociodemographic factors and vulnerability to multiple extreme weather events: A national study in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Millions of U.S. residents experience increasingly more prevalent weather events due to climate change, however, there is limited research exploring the vulnerability to multiple extreme weather events using a national U.S. AIMS: Identify patterns in exposures to climate events, and examine sociodemographic factors associated with increased climate event vulnerability. METHOD: Data was retrieved from the May 2022 American Trends Panel, a nationally representative sample of 10,282 United States adults. We performed a latent class analysis, a statistical method used to identify uno

Influence of climate warming on tickborne encephalitis expansion to higher altitudes over the last decade (1997-2006) in the Highland Region (Czech Republic).

The steep rise in the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in the 1990s and its subsequent high level in the Czech Republic are not even over the whole territory. It is manifested markedly in the Czech-Moravian Highland region. In the decades of 1971 through 1992, TBE incidence in the Highland Region did not reach the countrywide average. The rise has been noted only since 1997; in the year 2006 TBE incidence in that administrative region was more than double the countrywide average. Analysis of the situation have not found any socio-economic shifts or land-use changes, or in the numbers

Integrating AI and climate change scenarios for multi-risk assessment in the coastal municipalities of the Veneto region.

Global climate is experiencing exceptional warming, leading to a rise in extreme events worldwide. Coastal regions are particularly vulnerable to climate change (CC), due to dense populations, interconnected economies, and fragile ecosystems. These areas face escalating risks as CC intensifies the severity and frequency of extreme weather phenomena, like heavy precipitation, sea-level rise (SLR), storm surges. Integrated approaches are crucial to assess the combined impacts of atmospheric and marine hazards at the land-sea interface. Machine Learning (ML) offer innovative solutions to analyse

A transient rise in tropical sea surface temperature during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum.

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) has been attributed to a rapid rise in greenhouse gas levels. If so, warming should have occurred at all latitudes, although amplified toward the poles. Existing records reveal an increase in high-latitude sea surface temperatures (SSTs) (8 degrees to 10 degrees C) and in bottom water temperatures (4 degrees to 5 degrees C). To date, however, the character of the tropical SST response during this event remains unconstrained. Here we address this deficiency by using paired oxygen isotope and minor element (magnesium/calcium) ratios of planktonic foram

Storm surge hydrographs from historical observations of sea level along the Dutch North Sea coast.

UNLABELLED: Due to changing climates and rising sea levels, low-lying coastal regions, such as the Netherlands, face increased risks of flooding driven by extreme sea levels. Thus, understanding extreme sea level events and their underlying dynamics is crucial for effective coastal management. This study developed and applied a novel classification framework to investigate historical storm surge events along the Dutch coast and improve the understanding of regional storm surge dynamics. Using 16 sea level records, storm surges were identified with the Peak Over Threshold (POT) method, using th

Improving our understanding of future tropical cyclone intensities in the Caribbean using a high-resolution regional climate model.

The Caribbean region is prone to the strong winds and low air pressures of tropical cyclones and their corresponding storm surge that driving coastal flooding. To protect coastal communities from the impacts of tropical cyclones, it is important to understand how this impact of tropical cyclones might change towards the future. This study applies the storyline approach to show what tropical cyclones Maria (2017) and Dorian (2019) could look like in a 2 °C and 3.4 °C warmer future climate. These two possible future climates are simulated with a high-resolution regional climate model using the p

Using scenario planning to evaluate the impacts of climate change on wildlife populations and communities in the Florida Everglades.

It is uncertain how climate change will impact hydrologic drivers of wildlife population dynamics in freshwater wetlands of the Florida Everglades, or how to accommodate this uncertainty in restoration decisions. Using projections of climate scenarios for the year 2060, we evaluated how several possible futures could affect wildlife populations (wading birds, fish, alligators, native apple snails, amphibians, threatened and invasive species) across the Everglades landscape and inform planning already underway. We used data collected from prior research and monitoring to parameterize our wildli

What is coastal subsidence?

Major technological advances have made measurements of coastal subsidence more sophisticated, but these advances have not always been matched by a thorough examination of what is actually being measured. Here we draw attention to the widespread confusion about key concepts in the coastal subsidence literature, much of which revolves around the interplay between sediment accretion, vertical land motion and surface-elevation change. We attempt to reconcile this by drawing on well-established concepts from the tectonics community. A consensus on these issues by means of a common language can help

Surface Water-Groundwater Connections as Pathways for Inland Salinization of Coastal Aquifers.

Coastal agricultural zones are experiencing salinization due to accelerating rates of sea-level rise, causing reduction in crop yields and abandonment of farmland. Understanding mechanisms and drivers of this seawater intrusion (SWI) is key to mitigating its effects and predicting future vulnerability of groundwater resources to salinization. We implemented a monitoring network of pressure and specific conductivity (SC) sensors in wells and surface waters to target marsh-adjacent agricultural areas in greater Dover, Delaware. Recorded water levels and SC over a period of three years show that

Cerebral oxygenation at high altitude and the response to carbon dioxide, hyperventilation and oxygen. The Birmingham Medical Research Expeditionary Society.

Cerebral oxygenation is likely to be of critical importance in determining function at high altitude. The present study has used the technique of near-IR spectroscopy to monitor changes in cerebral regional oxygenation in response to inhaled carbon dioxide, hyperventilation and supplementary oxygen on ascent to 4680 m over 3 days. At sea level, inhaled CO(2) resulted in a significant rise in cerebral regional oxygenation [from mean 69.6% (S.D. 2.4% to 71. 1+/-2.3%; means+/-S.D.; P<0.001). At 4680 m, CO(2) increased regional cerebral oxygenation (63.8+/-2.5% to 65.9+/-2.2%; P<0.001) and also in

A comparative analysis of dune toe extraction methodologies and implications for assessment of foredune dynamics.

An acceleration in Sea Level Rise (SLR) and change in storm activity is likely to increase erosion and flood hazards over the coming decades, representing a significant economic burden and threat to coastal environments globally. Foredune systems may mitigate hazards by providing a natural flood protection to back barrier resources, but only if they can maintain their volume and elevation in pace with SLR and changing storm climates. The beach-dune interface, or dune toe (dt), is an important process boundary that has been used to classify and assess the resiliency of coastal landscapes, howev

Unveiling the Role of Dynamic Alternative Splicing Modulation After Infestation with Sea Lice (Caligus rogercresseyi) in Atlantic Salmon.

Sea lice are pathogenic marine ectoparasite copepods that represent a severe risk to the worldwide salmon industry. Several transcriptomic investigations have characterized the regulation of gene expression response of Atlantic salmon to sea lice infestation. These studies have focused on the levels of transcript, overlooking the potentially relevant role of alternative splicing (AS), which corresponds to an essential control mechanism of gene expression through RNA processing. In the present study, we performed a genome-wide bioinformatics characterization of differential AS event dynamics in

An Analysis of Dune Management on the Kenfig, Culbin and Sefton Coasts in the UK Using the SWOT Framework.

The stabilization of coastal sand dunes in the 20th century led to an expansion of vegetation cover, which is considered detrimental in the United Kingdom due to the loss of habitat for native species that depend on mobile dunes. Coastal managers have recognized this as a growing concern. However, conservation priorities must be identified to manage the situation effectively. Therefore, this study aims to identify potential conservation priorities for dune habitats at Culbin (Scotland), Kenfig (Wales) and the Sefton coast (England) by undertaking a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, a

Pluvial flood adaptation using nature-based solutions: An integrated biophysical-economic assessment.

Globally, flood events are considered the costliest natural hazard. Changes in precipitation patterns and large areas of impervious surfaces in urban environments are increasing the sensitivity of these systems to runoff production. At the same time, projected global sea-level rise may further increase the frequency of compound flooding due to simultaneous storm surge, sea-level rise and pluvial runoff that cause vast socio-economic and ecological impacts to coastal cities. In this context, over the last decade, the role of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) has been recognised to support climate ch

The influence of wind and basin geometry on surge attenuation along a microtidal channel in the western Baltic Sea.

The capacity of river mouths to reduce storm surge water levels upstream, referred to as along-estuary attenuation, has been assessed by several studies. The coastal protection function of semi-enclosed water bodies such as lagoons and channels with narrow inlets remains less explored and generalization is hampered by differences in morphology and hydrodynamic forcing. Here we use a hydrodynamic model to investigate surge attenuation along a microtidal channel with a narrow inlet at the Baltic Sea coast of Germany called The Schlei. We quantify the importance of wind and the contribution of th

Resistance of freshwater sediment bacterial communities to salinity disturbance and the implication for industrial salt discharge and climate change-based salinization.

The impact of salinization on freshwater ecosystems became apparent during the 2022 ecological disaster in the Oder River, located in Poland and Germany, which was caused by salt discharge from mining activities. How bacterial communities respond to salinization caused by industrial salt discharge, or climate change-driven events, depends on the sensitivity of these complex bacterial communities. To investigate the sensitivity of bacterial communities to pulse salinization, we performed an experiment in the salinity range from 0.2 to 6.0. In addition, we sampled similar salinities in the litto
