Observations in 2001 on hookworms ( Uncinaria spp.) in otariid pinnipeds.

Uncinaria spp. were recovered from the milk of California sea lions ( Zalophus californianus) collected from the: (1) teats of a cow just after parturition (one parasitic third-stage larva, L(3)), (2) stomach of her nursing pup (two L(3)), and (3) stomach of a dead pup about 2 days old (one L(3), one headless, probably L(3), and four L(4)) on San Miguel Island, California in May 2001. This, in addition to earlier research, indicates transmammary transmission of hookworms in this host. Uncinaria spp. were found in dead northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus) in the: (1) intestines of 2 of 75

Seal finger in a wildlife ranger.

We describe a case of septic arthritis of the interphalangeal joint of the thumb in a man following a seal bite. Early and continued treatment with antibiotics of the penicillin family failed to control the infection. Empirical treatment with tetracycline resolved the infection, but the patient has permanent joint damage. In apparently ordinary infective conditions, which fail to respond to therapy, the history may suggest that an unusual organism is responsible.

The seal finger: an unusual case of monoarticular sepsis.

We describe a case of monoarthritis in an Inuit seal hunter which progressed to joint destruction of the distal interphalangeal joint despite early and aggressive sequential antibiotic therapy with ampicillin, cloxacillin and penicillin G. In retrospect, had the entity of seal finger been diagnosed at the onset, appropriate antibiotic therapy with tetracycline may have prevented permanent joint damage.

Pollutants in harp seals (Phoca groenlandica). II. Heavy metals and selenium.

Between 1976 and 1978, 249 harp seals were sampled from five locations in the Northwest Atlantic and Arctic for heavy metal and selenium residue analyses in tissue. Significant loading was apparent only in blood, brain, kidney, liver and muscle. Samples were analysed for mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). The seals carried higher levels of Cd than of the other metals. Residue levels of Cd were highest in kidney tissue; levels of other metals were highest in liver. Both males and females bioaccumulated Cd, Hg and Se. Cd, Hg, Se and Cu residues were detected in

Cognitive perception of circulating oxygen in seals is the reason they don't drown.

Marine mammals rely on maintaining sufficient blood oxygen levels while diving to prevent drowning. Generally, oxygen is cognitively imperceptible to mammals that instead sense rising carbon dioxide as a proxy for low oxygen. Not perceiving oxygen, however, is risky for diving mammals. We argue that any ability to alter dives based upon direct perception of oxygen should have been strongly selected for. We exposed diving seals to inhaled gas mixes that were experimentally altered to affect circulating levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Dive duration was positively correlated with circulating

Gross pathology and liver mercury concentrations in harbour porpoises, harbour seals and grey seals in Denmark, Northern Europe.

Here we report the first investigation of gross pathology and mercury (Hg) in liver tissue from harbour porpoises, harbour seals and grey seals from Denmark, Northern Europe. Mercury concentrations ranged between 0.2 and 248 μg/g wet weight (ww) with highest concentrations found in grey seals and subadult harbour seals from the Baltic Sea, with no relationship to body condition. Necropsy findings across all three species decreasing in the following order: pneumonia (n = 60) > respiratory parasitism (n = 56) > wounds (n = 18) > GI-parasites (stomach nematodes and/or parasitic colitis) (n = 16)

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma and a novel gammaherpesvirus in northern elephant seals Mirounga angustirostris.

Two emaciated male northern elephant seal (NES) Mirounga angustirostris pups were admitted to The Marine Mammal Center (Sausalito, California, USA) and treated for malnutrition. Complete blood counts showed a progressive moderate to marked leukocytosis characterized by a predominance of large monomorphic mononuclear cells of probable lymphoid origin, frequently with flower-shaped nuclei. Both seals were euthanized due to suspected lymphoid neoplasia. At necropsy, most lymph nodes in both pups were markedly enlarged, some with distinct white nodules, the spleens were diffusely enlarged, and the

STREPTOCOCCUS PHOCAE IN MARINE MAMMALS OF NORTHEASTERN PACIFIC AND ARCTIC CANADA: A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF 85 POSTMORTEM INVESTIGATIONS.

:  Streptococcus phocae is a pathogen of marine mammals, although its pathogenicity remains poorly understood. Recovery of this bacterium from asymptomatic carriers suggests that it is an opportunistic pathogen. We investigated the role of S. phocae in naturally occurring disease and its significance as a pathogen based on postmortem investigations. Between 2007 and 2012, 1,696 whole carcasses, tissue samples, or both were submitted from the northeastern Pacific and Arctic Canada for diagnostic testing. Streptococcus phocae was cultured from phocids ( n=66), otariids ( n=12), harbor porpoises

Leaching of mercury from seal carcasses into Antarctic soils.

More than 400 seal mummies and skeletons are now mapped in the northern part of James Ross Island, Antarctica. Decomposing carcasses represent a rare source of both organic matter and associated elements for the soil. Owing to their high trophic position, seals are known to carry a significant mercury body burden. This work focuses on the extent of the mercury input from seal carcasses and shows that such carcasses represent locally significant sources of mercury and methylmercury for the environment. Mercury contents in soil samples from the surrounding areas were determined using a single-pu

Viral and bacterial serology of six free-ranging bearded seals Erignathus barbatus.

Serum or heparinized plasma samples were obtained from 3 male (2 adult and 1 weaned calf) and 3 adult female free-ranging bearded seals Erignathus barbatus in May of 1994, 1995, or 1996. Blood samples were obtained from animals taken in subsistence hunts near St. Lawrence Island, Alaska and screened for antibodies to a suite of bacteria and viruses potentially pathogenic for pinnipeds and/or humans. No samples had detectable antibodies to Brucella spp., Phocine distemper virus, influenza A virus or caliciviruses (San Miguel sea lion virus strains 1, 2, and 4 to 13, vesicular exanthema of swine

Phocid seals, seal lice and heartworms: a terrestrial host-parasite system conveyed to the marine environment.

Adaptation of pinnipeds to the marine habitat imposed parallel evolutions in their parasites. Ancestral pinnipeds must have harboured sucking lice, which were ancestors of the seal louse Echinophthirius horridus. The seal louse is one of the few insects that successfully adjusted to the marine environment. Adaptations such as keeping an air reservoir and the ability to hold on to and move on the host were necessary, as well as an adjustment of their life cycle to fit the diving habits of their host. E. horridus are confined to the Northern Hemisphere and have been reported from 9 species of no

[Antibodies to Brucella in caspian seals].

As the result of the study of Caspian seals, the presence of antibodies to Brucella was detected in the blood serum of these animals. The annual dynamics of the proportion of seropositive animals was noted. These data indicate the possibility of the circulation of the infective agent of brucellosis in the population of Caspian seals.

Aspects of reproduction in female Ross seals (Ommatophoca rossii).

Ovaries were collected from 26 Ross seals shot in the King Haakon VII Sea south of the 60 degrees latitude during 3 periods, between 12 January and 2 February 1980-1982. The structure of the ovaries resembled that of other pinnipeds. A corpus luteum was found in 18 of 26 females, which therefore were regarded as reproductive. However, no females were lactating or visibly pregnant (presence of fetus in the uterus). Of the remaining 8 females (non-reproductive), 3 had neither a corpus luteum nor a corpus albicans. Ovulation did not alternate between ovaries in 4 of 10 females. Ovarian weight was

Ready to dive? Early constraints help juvenile southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) acclimatize to aquatic life.

Breath-holding foraging implies different adaptations to limit oxygen (O2) depletion and maximize foraging time. Physiological adjustments can be mediated through O2 consumption, driven by muscle mitochondria, which can also produce reactive oxygen species during reoxygenation. Southern elephant seals spend months foraging at sea, diving for up to 1 h. Pups transition abruptly to aquatic life after a post-weaning period, during which they fast and progressively increase their activity, making this period critical for the development of an adaptive response to oxygen restriction and oxidative s

TERRESTRIAL PATHOGEN POLLUTANT, TOXOPLASMA GONDII, THREATENS HAWAIIAN MONK SEALS (NEOMONACHUS SCHAUINSLANDI) FOLLOWING HEAVY RUNOFF EVENTS.

Toxoplasmosis is a major threat to Hawaiian monk seals (Neomonachus schauinslandi) in the main Hawaiian Islands where seal habitat overlaps with substantial human and domestic cat populations. As the definitive hosts, members of the Felidae are the sole sources contaminating the environment with infectious oocysts; these oocysts can be transported into the marine environment, thereby threatening marine mammals. To understand environmental factors influencing Hawaiian monk seal exposure to Toxoplasma gondii, we examined monk seal strandings from toxoplasmosis in relationship to location and rai

Free-swimming northern elephant seals have low field metabolic rates that are sensitive to an increased cost of transport.

Widely ranging marine predators often adopt stereotyped, energy-saving behaviours to minimize the energetic cost of transport while maximizing energy gain. Environmental and anthropogenic disturbances can disrupt energy balance by prompting avoidance behaviours that increase transport costs, thereby decreasing foraging efficiency. We examined the ability of 12 free-ranging, juvenile northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) to mitigate the effects of experimentally increased transport costs by modifying their behaviour and/or energy use in a compensatory manner. Under normal locomotion
