Calcium salts of long-chain fatty acids from linseed oil decrease methane production by altering the rumen microbiome in vitro.

Calcium salts of long-chain fatty acids (CSFA) from linseed oil have the potential to reduce methane (CH4) production from ruminants; however, there is little information on the effect of supplementary CSFA on rumen microbiome as well as CH4 production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of supplementary CSFA on ruminal fermentation, digestibility, CH4 production, and rumen microbiome in vitro. We compared five treatments: three CSFA concentrations-0% (CON), 2.25% (FAL) and 4.50% (FAH) on a dry matter (DM) basis-15 mM of fumarate (FUM), and 20 mg/kg DM of monensin (MON).

In Vitro Investigation of the Antimicrobial Effect of Three Bisphosphonates Against Different Bacterial Strains.

PURPOSE: Since the first descriptions of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in 2003, the pathogenesis has remained unanswered. Recent histomorphometric studies have found several microorganisms, including Actinomyces, Bacillus, Fusobacterium, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Selenomonas, Treponema, and Candida albicans in necrotic bone. Polymerase chain reaction studies have recently confirmed the occurrence of 48 genera. Only a few studies have examined the antimicrobial effect of bisphosphonates (BPs). The influence of bacterial growth on the etiology remains unclear. The aim

Bacterial diversity in necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis in HIV-positive subjects.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP) is a painful and potentially debilitating affliction that affects about 2% to 6% of HIV-positive subjects. NUP may be caused by specific microorganisms that are presently unknown or by microbial species not usually thought to cause periodontal infections. The purpose of this study was to define the bacterial species associated with NUP in HIV-positive patients. METHODS: 16S rRNA bacterial genes of DNA isolated from subgingival plaque of 8 HIV-positive subjects with NUP were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned into Esch

Acute high carbonate alkalinity alters ion regulatory functions, chitin turnover, and intestinal microbial communities in Penaeus monodon.

Carbonate alkalinity is an important environmental stressor in saline-alkali aquaculture. However, its comprehensive effects on the physiological regulation, transcriptional responses, and intestinal microbial homeostasis of Penaeus monodon remain unclear. In this study, shrimp were exposed to high carbonate alkalinity stress for 96 h. Key physiological indicators were evaluated, and gill transcriptome analysis and intestinal 16S rRNA gene sequencing were performed. The results showed that high alkalinity reduced the survival rate of P. monodon, increased hemolymph osmotic pressure and carboni

Comparison of gastric microbiota in patients with different gastric lesions in high and low risk areas of gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Variation in gastric cancer (GC) incidence across different geographic areas persists, even when there are similar prevalence rates of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. An extensive examination of the gastric microbiota in populations from both high- and low-risk regions of GC could help explain the geographical disparities in GC incidence. METHODS: This study enrolled a total of 130 patients with superficial gastritis (SG) and precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (PLGC) from a high-risk area for GC and 205 patients from a low-risk area. Gastric microbial profiling was

Rumen microbial responses to supplemental nitrate. II. Potential interactions with live yeast culture on the prokaryotic community and methanogenesis in continuous culture.

Nitrates have been fed to ruminants, including dairy cows, as an electron sink to mitigate CH4 emissions. In the NO3- reduction process, NO2- can accumulate, which could directly inhibit methanogens and possibly other microbes in the rumen. Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast was hypothesized to decrease NO2- through direct reduction or indirectly by stimulating the bacterium Selenomonas ruminantium, which is among the ruminal bacteria most well characterized to reduce both NO3- and NO2-. Ruminal fluid was incubated in continuous cultures fed diets without or with NaNO3 (1.5% of diet dry matter; i.

Effects of ruminal lipopolysaccharides on growth and fermentation end products of pure cultured bacteria.

Elevated levels of ruminal lipopolysaccharides (LPS) have been linked to ruminal acidosis; however, they result in reduced endotoxicity compared to LPS derived from species like Escherichia coli. Additionally, there is a knowledge gap on the potential effect of LPS derived from ruminal microbiome on ruminal bacteria species whose abundance is associated with ruminal acidosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of LPS-free anaerobic water (CTRL), E. coli-LPS (E. COLI), ruminal-LPS (RUM), and a 1:1 mixture of E. coli and ruminal-LPS (MIX) on the growth characteristics and fe

The oral gram-negative anaerobic microflora in young children: longitudinal changes from edentulous to dentate mouth.

Eruption of primary teeth has a great influence on the oral environment by providing suitable niches for bacterial colonization. The composition of oral gram-negative anaerobic microflora was investigated in 21 young children (mean age 32 months) with primary dentition. The bacterial findings of samples were compared with those of the same children collected at their edentulous infant period (mean age 3 months). During the primary period, 2 samples were collected from each child: a sample with dental floss from gingival margin of 2 teeth and stimulated saliva pooled with a mucosal swab sample.

Ability of Acidaminococcus fermentans to oxidize trans-aconitate and decrease the accumulation of tricarballylate, a toxic end product of ruminal fermentation.

Mixed ruminal bacteria convert trans-aconitate to tricarballylate, a tricarboxylic acid which chelates blood divalent cations and decreases their availability (J. B. Russell and P. J. Van Soest, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 47:155-159, 1984). Decreases in blood magnesium in turn cause a potentially fatal disease known as grass tetany. trans-Aconitate was stoichiometrically reduced to tricarballylate by Selenomonas ruminantium, a common ruminal bacterium in grass-fed ruminants (J. B. Russell, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 49:120-126, 1985). When mixed ruminal bacteria were enriched with trans-aconitat

Localisation of nitrate-reducing and highly abundant microbial communities in the oral cavity.

The nitrate (NO3-) reducing bacteria resident in the oral cavity have been implicated as key mediators of nitric oxide (NO) homeostasis and human health. NO3--reducing oral bacteria reduce inorganic dietary NO3- to nitrite (NO2-) via the NO3--NO2--NO pathway. Studies of oral NO3--reducing bacteria have typically sampled from either the tongue surface or saliva. The aim of this study was to assess whether other areas in the mouth could contain a physiologically relevant abundance of NO3- reducing bacteria, which may be important for sampling in clinical studies. The bacterial composition of sev

Metagenomic Shotgun Sequencing Analysis of Canalicular Concretions in Lacrimal Canaliculitis Cases.

Lacrimal canaliculitis is a rare infection of the lacrimal canaliculi with canalicular concretions formed by aggregation of organisms. Metagenomic shotgun sequencing analysis using next-generation sequencing has been used to detect pathogens directly from clinical samples. Using this technology, we report cases of successful pathogen detection of canalicular concretions in lacrimal canaliculitis cases. We investigated patients with primary lacrimal canaliculitis examined in the eye clinics of four hospitals from February 2015 to July 2017. Eighteen canalicular concretion specimens collected fr
