Overcoming the top 10 tracheotomy self-care learning barriers.

Multispecialty inpatient units are the norm in today's acute care settings. Since few units have the luxury of seasoned otorhinolaryngology (ORL) nurses, care of the postoperative patient with a tracheotomy, including discharge teaching and planning are left to the generalists. Generalist nurses and new ORL nurses may find themselves experiencing fear and anxiety along with the tracheotomy patients they care for and teach. Experienced ORL nurses are continually challenged to find ways to share their expertise with patients and less experienced nurses in effective ways. This article presents a

Finnish physicians' opinions of vaginal estriol in self-care.

OBJECTIVE: In Finland vaginal estriol drugs became available without prescription in 1992, resulting in widespread advertising of these drugs to lay women and in an increase in sales. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was sent to gynecologists and general practitioners (n = 341, 77% response rate) in Finland in 1996. RESULTS: 60% of the physicians considered vaginal estriol to be suitable for over-t

Eligibility-Identification Difficulty and Self-Reported Preventive Care Implementation Among Japanese Primary Care Physicians.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is an important setting for prevention, but implementation gaps may arise before clinicians can identify patients eligible for preventive services. We described self-reported preventive care implementation among Japanese primary care physicians and examined whether lower implementation co-occurred with eligibility-identification difficulty. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide web-based cross-sectional survey of physician members of the Japan Primary Care Association from May to June 2025. Respondents reported recommendation consistency for 30 preventive services, diffi

Pharmaceutical care in the self-treatment of common urological problems.

Pharmaceutical care in the self-treatment of common urological problems In case of self-treatment of common urological disorders, a pharmacist or pharmacy assistant is often the first healthcare professional the patient turns to. Appropriate information should be obtained from the interview with the patient to distinguish between symptoms and conditions suitable for self-treatment and, conversely, to recommend a visit to the physician. The first contact of a patient with healthcare professionals in a pharmacy can also contribute to the detection of more serious diseases. The article deals with

Role of Portuguese community pharmacy and pharmacists in self-care.

Portugal recognizes the importance of self-care in its policies and has been actively engaging in health literacy and citizen empowerment. The current National Health Plan for the period 2021-2030 clearly mentions the need to "take greater advantage of the network of community pharmacies throughout the national territory, in favour of the health of the community, from the protection and promotion of health, through health literacy, to the prevention and early detection of disease, and the aggravation of chronic disease, among others". There is recognition of the role of pharmacists and communi

The Importance of Self-Management in the Context of Personalized Care in COPD.

Despite current guidelines and decades of evidence on the benefits of a self-management approach, self-management of COPD remains relatively under-utilized in clinical care compared with other chronic diseases. However, self-management interventions can play a valuable role in supporting people with COPD to respond to changing symptoms, and thereby make appropriate decisions regarding the management of their own chronic condition. In this review, we discuss the history and evolution of the concept of self-management, assess current multidisciplinary support programs and clinical interactions d

BACKGROUND: Social support can influence treatment adherence of patients with chronic illnesses, which may explain the positive effects of social support on heart failure (HF) outcomes. METHODS: We recruited 74 patients with HF from cardiology clinics of a Veterans Affairs Medical Center and a university-affiliated hospital, and tested the relationship
