A randomized clinical trial of cognitive marital therapy.

Thirty-three couples with severe marital discord referred to a psychiatric outpatient department were randomly assigned to Cognitive Marital Therapy or a control group. Cognitive Marital Therapy is a brief, structured couple therapy, which involves spouses in reciprocal self-disclosure of personal constructs. The control group received the same number of sessions of self-disclosure from a programmed marital enhancement text. Personal distress, marital adjustment, marital quality, and aspects of self-disclosure were measured before and after treatment. Symptoms of depression as well as somatic

Effects of safety behavior fading on social anxiety and emotional disclosure.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder commonly engage in safety behaviors (SBs), which are behavioral and cognitive strategies employed in an effort to avoid or decrease the likelihood of a feared threat outcome and decrease anxiety in social situations. These behaviors are thought to be dysfunctional and play a key role in contemporary models of the disorder. The current experimental study sought to expand upon existing research by examining the role of SBs in social anxiety and self-disclosure. Participants with elevated social anxiety symptoms (N = 115) were randomized to either a two-we

Predictive Performance of Screening Methods for Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Routine urine substance screening (USS) in pregnant women for perinatal substance exposure is associated with bias and has limited evidence supporting its use. We evaluated agreement between maternal disclosure, maternal and neonatal USS, and their predictive abilities for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) admission. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective study, we included pregnant women with gestational substance use and their neonates (February 2018 to December 2022). Agreement between screening tests was assessed using κ. Predictive abilities of the screening we

"I Wish This Tool Was Available to Me Sooner": Piloting a Workplace Autism Disclosure Decision-Aid Tool for Autistic Youth and Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: For autistic youth and young adults, deciding whether to disclose their autism at work may be complex since they are newly entering the workforce and are at an impressionable developmental period. Decision-aid tools can help someone make a choice regarding a topic/situation. We developed a workplace autism disclosure decision-aid tool called DISCLOSURE (Do I Start the Conversation and Let On, Speak Up, and REveal?) to support autistic youth and young adults navigate disclosure decision-making. In this study, we aimed to assess the DISCLOSURE tool's (1) impact on decision-making and

Perceptions about using a patient portal to self-disclose HIV-related information to sexual partners: a qualitative study among adolescents and emerging adults living with HIV.

Patient portals may enhance HIV viral load (VL) disclosure experiences between adolescents and emerging adults living with HIV (AHIV) and their partners. This qualitative inquiry investigated AHIV perspectives on using a patient portal to self-disclose HIV-related information to partners. 16 AHIV aged 13-25 years were recruited at a health center in the United States to participate in audio-recorded virtual in-depth interviews (IDIs). Participants discussed perspectives on HIV self-disclosure, facilitating self-disclosure processes using the patient portal, and what they wanted others to know

Disclosure of HIV status between spouses in rural Malawi.

Disclosure of HIV status after HIV voluntary counseling and testing has important implications for the spread of the HIV epidemic and the health of individuals who are HIV positive. Here, we use individual and couples level data for currently married respondents from an ongoing longitudinal study in rural Malawi to (1) examine the extent of HIV status disclosure by HIV serostatus; (2) identify reasons for not sharing one's HIV status with a spouse; and (3) evaluate the reliability of self-reports of HIV status disclosure. We find that disclosure of HIV status is relatively common among rural M

Reactions to the disclosure of intrafamilial childhood sexual abuse: Findings from the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline.

INTRODUCTION: For child sexual abuse (CSA) victims, disclosure can be helpful or harmful depending on how recipients respond. Despite a growing body of literature examining reactions to disclosure, little is known about the experiences of current CSA victims, particularly those abused by family. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe and explore the initial disclosure experiences of intrafamilial CSA victims, and whether reactions varied based on the type of disclosure recipient. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study utilized anonymous, archival data from the US-based National Sexual Assault Online

Making the leap and finding your feet: A qualitative study of disclosure and social support in university students with type 1 diabetes.

University poses unique challenges surrounding disclosure for students living with type 1 diabetes, with implications for social support and self-management. Semi-structured interviews with students and peer interviewers living with type 1 diabetes explored university experiences of disclosure and social support. Thematic analysis identified three major themes: disclosure as a measured process, the need for lived experience for true understanding and personal growth and self-awareness. Findings emphasize the need to scaffold the university transition for individuals with type 1 diabetes as dis

"Stop Waking the Dead": Internet Child Sexual Abuse and Perspectives on Its Disclosure.

The phenomenon of Internet child sexual abuse (ICSA) has been receiving growing attention over the last decade, and studies have promoted knowledge with respect to the phenomenon's epidemiology, as well as to characteristics of the victims, perpetrators, and dynamics in these cases. The current retrospective study sought to delve into the disclosure component in cases of ICSA. The sample comprised 52 cases of adolescents who arrived at a child advocacy center (CAC) following ICSA. Analysis of these cases was targeted to capture the multifaceted nature of disclosure using those perspectives tha

The role of masculinity in HIV disclosure among adolescent South African boys living with HIV.

HIV transmission among adolescents remains a pressing public health challenge in South Africa. Onward HIV disclosure to sexual partners can reduce transmission, but disclosure is low among adolescents. Adherence to hegemonic masculine norms may create a barrier to disclosure among boys. Repeated measures designs are necessary to more accurately capture disclosure, which is an ongoing behavior shaped by multiple processes. 251 South African adolescent boys living with perinatally-acquired HIV and in an intimate relationship were enrolled between 2020-2023. They completed a survey capturing thei

In-person versus electronic screening for social risks among carers of pediatric inpatients: A mixed methods randomized trial.

We aimed to compare disclosure of social risks according to self-report on an iPad versus face-to-face questions from a health professional and to explore carers' experiences of screening. This two-arm, parallel group, randomized trial was conducted from January 19, 2021, to December 17, 2021, in a public hospital pediatric ward serving a disadvantaged area of an Australian capital city. Carers of children aged ≤ 5 years admitted to the Children's Ward were eligible. The primary outcome was disclosure of social risks. Breaking the Cycle: How Core Self-Evaluation Shapes Cyber-Relationship Addiction.

Although cyber-relationship addiction among deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) college students has become a problem that needs urgent attention, few studies have examined the effects of core self-evaluation on cyber-relationship addiction and its underlying mediating mechanisms in this population. Drawing from the person-affect-cognition-execution model for addictive behaviors, this study aimed to explore the mediating role of anxiety and online self-disclosure in the relationship between core self-evaluation and cyber-relationship addiction among DHH college students. A total of 355 DHH college

Socially anxious people reveal more personal information with virtual counselors that talk about themselves using intimate human back stories.

In this paper, we describe our findings from research designed to explore the effect of virtual human counselors' self-disclosure using intimate human back stories on real human clients' social responses in psychological counseling sessions. To investigate this subject, we designed an experiment involving two conditions of the counselors' self-disclosure: human back stories and computer back stories. We then measured socially anxious users' verbal self-disclosure. The results demonstrated that highly anxious users revealed personal information more than less anxious users when they interacted

Judgements of social inappropriateness in adults with Tourette's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Socially inappropriate behaviour has frequently been reported in Tourette's syndrome (TS), but has not been studied experimentally. The current study was designed to examine the appropriateness of self-disclosures in TS using an emotional self-disclosure task. METHODS: Adult participants with TS-alone (20) and matched controls (20) were compared on two social judgement tasks, one examining the regulation of behaviour in an emotional self-disclosure task requiring participants to generate examples of autobiographical events, and the other examining mentalistic judgement of others

[Disclosure of a diagnosis of childhood autism and parents' acceptance of the disability].

Mothers of 14 children (10 boys, 4 girls) with childhood autism answered the self-report questionnaire regarding the disclosure of a diagnosis of autism and their acceptance of the disability. The children's mean age at the study was 8.6 years, and their ages at the time of the disclosure and acceptance were 4.0 and 5.2 years, respectively. The age at acceptance exhibited a statistically significant positive correlation with the age of disclosure indicating that early disclosure was related to early acceptance. The results obtained in the questionnaire suggested that the increased understandin

Improving professional practice in the investigation and management of intrafamilial child sexual abuse: Qualitative analysis of serious child protection reviews.

BACKGROUND: Local multi-agency case reviews are regularly held in England when children have suffered significant harm from abuse or neglect, including from child sexual abuse (CSA). Most CSA takes place within families, is common but under-reported and can cause long-term harm. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to analyse English child protection reviews relating to intrafamilial CSA to identify improvements for professional practice. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Local Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (LCSPRs) and Serious Case Reviews (SCRs) relating to serious incidents of intrafamilial CSA occurring

Facilitating Children's Informal Disclosures of Sexual Abuse: The Role of Online Counsellors at a National Children's Helpline.

The literature on disclosures of child sexual abuse makes clear that in the absence of physical indicators of abuse, children need to articulate their abuse in order to prevent further harm. However, many struggle to verbalize their abuse. Previous research has recognized the interactional nature of disclosures but has focussed only on what the children say, rather than considering the role of the other interlocutor. To provide a novel perspective on disclosures, this research addresses the question 'To what extent do counselors facilitate children's disclosures of sexual abuse?' Online text-b

What do the potential recipients of disclosure of OSA say? Perspectives from adolescent residents in Scotland and Chile.

BACKGROUND: With the increase in internet use, new forms of child victimization like Online Sexual Abuse (OSA) have emerged. Children and adolescents rarely disclose these incidents and most disclosure happens around peers. OBJECTIVE: This research addresses the perspective of adolescents (not victims of OSA), potential recipients of the disclosure, within the context of disclosure of OSA committed by either adult or peer perpetrators. METHODS: The study was performed in two stages. We interviewed adolescents in Scotland and then conducted focus groups with adolescents from Chile. PARTICIPA

Disclosing the abuse: The effect of ethnoreligious identity on CSA disclosure in forensic interviews.

Multiple studies have examined sexually abused children and their interactions with the legal system, as manifested in children's disclosures of sexual abuse during forensic interviews. Nevertheless, few have done so while referencing contextual variables, such as ethnoreligious identity. The current study was designed to examine how ethnoreligious identity affects children's disclosure in forensic interviews beyond the contribution of child characteristics and abuse characteristics. In addition, the moderating role of pre-interview disclosure was examined. An analysis of 1054 forensic intervi
