The accuracy of self-reported fractures in older people.

Self-report is often used in large-scale studies. Therefore, it is important to determine the accuracy of self-report. In the Blue Mountains Eye Study, a population-based study of 3,654 older, community-dwelling Australians, subjects were asked about fracture history at the 5-year follow-up interview. All reported non-rib and vertebral fractures were radiologically confirmed. Hospital radiology records were searched for fracture records of people who reported no fractures in the 5-year period. Of 2,326 subjects who came to the interview, 272 subjects reported 318 fractures sustained since 1990

Psychiatric diagnoses of self-reported child abusers.

In order to evaluate lifetime psychiatric diagnoses and prevalence of dyssocial behaviors among self-reported child abusers, three large databases of clinical, community, and family study subjects were examined. Subjects who had acted as parents and who reported any episodes of child battery were compared to those without any history of child battery on prevalence of psychiatric disorders and dyssocial behaviors. Overall, 4% of subjects from the community sample reported child abuse. Abusers not selected through alcoholism treatment were more likely to receive diagnoses of alcoholism, antisoci

Self-reported visual problems of older drivers.

We conducted a survey in order to gain insights into the reasons older persons decide to give up driving. Our survey focused on vision. We probed the relationship between visual deficiencies and driving status by asking older people about the problems they encountered while performing routine visual tasks. The results showed that older persons who had recently given up driving reported more visual problems than did their driving counterparts. These problems related to difficulties in dynamic vision, visual processing speed, visual search, light sensitivity, and near vision. The results suggest

Motives and psychodynamics of self-reported, unincarcerated rapists.

Fifteen men, classified by self-report as rapists and attempted rapists, but who had never been arrested or convicted, were compared to a matched control group on standardized instruments and content-coded interviews. Differences in hostility toward women, power motivations, and hypermasculinity were similar to findings from studies of convicted rapists. However, results suggest a greater role for the father in the etiology of rape-associated dynamics than has previously been reported.

The self-reported effects of PCP on human aggression.

The elicitation of violent of psychotic behavior by phencyclidine (PCP) administration is well documented. There are indications, however, that behavioral responses to PCP may differ among PCP users as a function of background or personality characteristics. The present study examined 35 male jail inmates with histories of PCP use. Estimates of the nature and extent of drug use and self-reports of previous psychiatric hospitalizations were obtained in these subjects. The Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory was modified to reflect behaviors under the two simulated conditions of "No PCP" and "PCP" u

Physicians' self-reports of reactions to malpractice litigation.

The authors devised a survey as a first step in assessing physicians' perceptions of the impact of medical malpractice litigation on their professional practice and personal lives. Subjects were a sample of physicians in Cook County, Ill., who had been sued during 1977-1981. Many respondents reported changes in how they practiced their profession. Two clusters of self-reported symptoms in reaction to the litigation also emerged. Further studies, including clinical interviews, are needed to clarify the impact of medical malpractice suits on the sociological reality of medical practice.

Self-reported nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and sex as self-injury (SASI): Relationship to abuse, risk behaviors, trauma symptoms, self-esteem and attachment.

This study focuses on a conceptually unexplored behavior among adolescents who report deliberately using sex as a means of self-injury. In a large high school-based sample (n = 5743), adolescents who engaged in sex as self-injury (SASI, n = 43) were compared to adolescents who reported direct nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI, n = 933) and those who reported both NSSI and SASI (n = 82). Results showed that significantly more adolescents with SASI had experience of penetrating sexual abuse, as well as more sexual partners compared to those with NSSI. The SASI group also had higher levels of self-re

Self-Reported Mental Health History and Self-Reported Coping Behaviours in Biomedicine Students-Exploring Associations with Healthy Lifestyle and Resilience.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders (MHDs) are an important concern among biomedical students, but estimates vary depending on whether studies assess confirmed diagnoses, perceived problems or current symptoms. This study assessed the presence of self-reported MHD history, operationalised as a heterogeneous combined outcome that included either a confirmed MHD diagnosis or a subjective perception of having or having had an MHD without official confirmation, and examined its associations with self-reported coping behaviours, resilience, study-related exhaustion and disengagement symptoms and he

Association of measured physical performance and demographic and health characteristics with self-reported physical function: implications for the interpretation of self-reported limitations.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported limitations in physical function often have only weak associations with measured performance on physical tests, suggesting that factors other than performance commonly influence self-reports. We tested if personal or health characteristics influenced self-reported limitations in three tasks, controlling for measured performance on these tasks. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data on adults aged >/= 60 years (N = 5396) from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to examine the association between the repeated chair rise test and self-reported diff

Brief Report: Lower Self-Efficacy and Lower PrEP Stigma Predict telePrEP Preferences Among HIV Self-Testers.

BACKGROUND: Remote health services, such as HIV self-testing (HIVST) and telehealth-based PrEP (telePrEP), can reduce barriers to prevention care. The goal of this study was to evaluate preferences for telePrEP services among a cohort of individuals who obtained HIVST. We hypothesized that preferences for telePrEP would be associated with lower self-efficacy and higher PrEP stigma. METHODS: Individuals ≥17 years of age who obtained a HIVST through the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and reported a negative test result were eligible for the study. Participants completed an online surv

Assessing creative self-efficacy in the Spanish workplace: Adaptation and validation of two self-report scales.

Creativity is a fundamental driver of organizational innovation, and creative self-efficacy (CSE) reflects employees' confidence in their creative potential. Despite the growing interest in measuring CSE in different professional and cultural settings, no evidence-based adaptation of instruments currently exists for Spanish employees. Two widely used measures of CSE were translated and culturally adapted for Spanish workers using a rigorous back-translation process. Data from 405 workers were analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis to examine internal structure. Reliability was estimated

Intentional Self-Inflicted Transcranial Screwdriver Injury: A Case Report.

Transcranial screwdriver injuries are rare forms of low-velocity penetrating cranial trauma that are most often described after interpersonal violence and may result in neurologic impairment or death. These injuries can be difficult to recognize when external wounds are small and may be incompletely characterized on initial imaging, particularly when retained metal produces artifact. Plain radiography and computed tomography (CT) are useful for defining foreign-body trajectory and guiding operative planning, but the full severity of injury may only become apparent through serial imaging and su

Self-limited cutaneous Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: A case report.

Blueberry muffin baby syndrome is a condition initially described in 1960 to classify the cutaneous manifestations of newborns with rubella. Subsequently, congenital diseases related to TORCH syndrome and blood dyscrasias have been included under this syndrome. Among the conditions associated with this syndrome is Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, an uncommon condition with variable involvement of one or more organs, often affecting the skin. One of its forms of presentation is Hashimoto-Pritzker disease, a self-limited congenital Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis with exclusively skin involvement. F

Genital self-mutilation in psychiatric patients: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Genital self-mutilation presents significant surgical challenges, particularly when complicated by psychiatric disorders. This case highlights the critical role of surgical intervention in the management of self-inflicted severe penile injuries and underscores the need to integrate surgical and psychiatric care to optimise results. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old man, with progressive psychiatric issues, self-inflicted penile amputation. He arrived late in the emergency room with a poorly preserved amputated penis, complicating potential reimplantation. The surgeons extensively

Self-strangulation induced penile partial amputation: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic amputation of the penis is a rare surgical emergency, usually caused by self-mutilation, accidents, circumcision, assault and animal attacks. This study aimed to summarize our treatment experience involving penile reconstruction in a rare case of a self-strangulation induced chronical penile partial amputation. CASE SUMMARY: A 22-year-old man presented with self-strangulation induced chronical penile partial amputation for 3 mo where the penile proximal part was 1 cm far from the pubis. Reconstruction methods included end-to-end anastomosis of the urethral mucosa, proxim

Refining Anger: Summarizing the Self-Report Measurement of Anger.

The current paper presents a five-factor measurement model of anger summarizing scores on public-domain self-report measures of anger. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of self-report measures of anger (UK, n = 500; USA, n = 625) suggest five replicable latent anger factors: anger-arousal, anger-rumination, frustration-discomfort, anger-regulation, and socially constituted anger. Findings suggested a 5-factor interpretation provided the best fit of the data. We also report evidence of measurement invariance for this 5-factor model of anger across gender, age, and ethnicity. The find

Methodological considerations for assessing trauma history via self-report.

OBJECTIVE: One must first experience a traumatic event (Criterion A in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; 5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) to be diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Standard procedures for assessing Criterion A (i.e., the "worst-event" method) may result in misidentification of trauma exposure status. The purpose of this Internet-based study was to obtain an estimate of the percent of an adult sample that is misidentified as non-Criterion A through use of this method. METHOD: Two separate samples completed t
