Effects of Childhood Maltreatment on Self-Compassion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review aims to estimate the extent to which childhood maltreatment influences self-compassion in later life. METHOD: Four English databases (Web of Science, PsycINFO, PubMed, and PsycARTICLES) and three Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and Weipu) were systematically searched. We extracted data related to the associations between child maltreatment and self-compassion and pooled them using random effect models. FINDINGS: A total of 20 eligible studies were included involving 6,877 participants in the analyses. Overall child maltr

The relationship of self-compassion and hope with quality of life for individuals with bleeding disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Minimal research has been conducted examining the relationship of positive psychology variables with quality of life (QOL) for individuals with bleeding disorders. While many individuals manage their bleeding disorders well, some are at higher risk of developing psychosocial complications due to the daily stressors of managing illness-related symptoms. AIM: The purpose of this study is to better understand the relationships between two positive psychology variables, self-compassion and hope and QOL (overall, psychosocial and physical) among individuals diagnosed with bleeding di

Common Pathways to NSSI and Suicide Ideation: The Roles of Rumination and Self-Compassion.

We investigated whether rumination and self-compassion moderate and/or mediate the relationships between negative affect and both non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide ideation. Undergraduate university students (n = 415) completed well-validated measures of negative affect, rumination, self-compassion, NSSI, and suicide ideation. Neither rumination nor self-compassion moderated associations between negative affect and NSSI and suicide ideation. However, both rumination and self-compassion mediated associations between negative affect and lifetime history of NSSI and suicide ideation. Se

Feasibility and acceptability of a brief online self-compassion intervention for mothers of infants.

To evaluate the acceptability and potential utility of a small package of online resources designed to improve self-compassion for mothers of infants. A within-groups repeated-measures study design was used. A community sample of 262 mothers who were ≤ 24 months post-partum were given access to a set of online resources (two videos plus a tip sheet) that outlined simple techniques for increasing self-compassion drawn from compassion-focused therapy (CFT). Participants completed pre-intervention assessment, followed by post-intervention assessment 1 month later. Assessment included self-report

The Role of Self-Compassion and Shame-Proneness Among Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa.

Background: Self-compassion (SC) and shame-proneness (SP) are likely transdiagnostic factors implicated in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). However, limited research has examined how these variables vary across distinct ED symptom profiles. To address this gap, this exploratory study aimed to identify latent symptom profiles among individuals diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) or Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and assess whether SC and SP levels and their association differ across classes. Methods: A clinical sample of 55 women with AN or BN completed self-report measures for asses

Investigating the effects and efficacy of self-compassion intervention on generalized anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the least successfully treated anxiety disorder. This clinical trial investigated the effects and efficacy of a novel self-compassion intervention in GAD. METHODS: A total of 75 GAD patients were assigned to a self-compassion intervention group (n = 25), a mindfulness intervention group (n = 25), or a treat-as-usual group (n = 25). Patients in the two active groups received eight intervention sessions in two weeks in addition to usual treatment i.e., pharmacotherapy. Primary outcomes were anxiety and worry, assessed at pre-intervention, post-i

The mediating effect of self-compassion on the relationship between childhood maltreatment and depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is the leading cause of suicide. Childhood maltreatment is an important influencing factor for depression in adulthood. However, the mediating effect of self-compassion between childhood maltreatment and depression has not yet been explored. METHODS: A cluster random sampling of 4189 students was selected from a university in Hebei Province, China. They completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, the Self-Compassion Scale, and the Self-Rating Depression Scale. RESULTS: Depression is significantly positively correlated with childhood maltreatment and its su

Association of Psychopathology Symptoms, Self-Compassion, and Forgiveness in Patients With Pulmonary Embolism.

Background Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially life-threatening disease with both physical and psychological impacts. The psychological distress in the early phase of the disease has not been previously studied in the literature.  Methods The study sample included patients with PE with or without deep vein thrombosis. All subjects included in the study prospectively completed the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) questionnaire, the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS), and the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) during their hospitalization for PE. Results Forty-four PE patients were included in the

Self-compassion and emotional invalidation mediate the effects of parental indifference on psychopathology.

This study investigated whether self-compassion and emotional invalidation (perceiving others as indifferent to one's emotions) may explain the relationship of childhood exposure to adverse parenting and adult psychopathology in psychiatric outpatients (N=326). Path analysis was used to investigate associations between exposure to adverse parenting (abuse and indifference), self-compassion, emotional invalidation, and mental health when controlling for gender and age. Self-compassion was strongly inversely associated with emotional invalidation, suggesting that a schema that others will be uns

Virtual reality nature exposure reduces self-criticism and shows trends toward enhanced self-compassion: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Building on the therapeutic potential of nature exposure and the increasing accessibility of immersive virtual reality (VR), this study investigates whether custom-designed VR environments-specifically a virtual forest and a virtual city-can differentially influence self-compassion, self-criticism, self-protection, and perceived stress. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the psychological impact of VR nature exposure compared to VR urban exposure on self-related emotional processes in a non-clinical adult sample. This study extends our previous pilot wor

Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Transgender and Non-Binary Adolescents and Young Adults: The Protective Role of Self-Compassion.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the association of self-compassion with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior in transgender and non-binary adolescents and young adults. Secondary aims were to examine (1) whether self-compassion buffered the association between victimization experiences and NSSI and (2) whether anxiety and depression symptoms explained the association between self-compassion and NSSI. METHOD: The participants were 236 Spanish-speaking transgender and non-binary adolescents and young adults (mean age=20.86, standard deviation [SD]=2.92), who were assessed t

Healing Through Self After Harm by Others: The Associations Between Self-Compassion, Trauma-Related Shame, and Physical Health.

Those who have experienced interpersonal violence are at an increased risk for a variety of adverse mental and physical health outcomes. As such, it is imperative that research look for ways to offset some of these adverse outcomes. Current studies suggest that self-compassion may help reduce the adverse physical health effects associated with interpersonal violence, including trauma-related shame specifically. The current study explored the associations between self-compassion, trauma-related shame, and physical health outcomes among those who have experienced interpersonal violence. In parti

The effects of childhood abuse, depression, and self-compassion on adolescent nonsuicidal self-injury: A moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a widespread public health issue in adolescents. Exploring the risk and protective variables of NSSI is critical for prevention and intervention. Based on the experiential avoidance model (Chapman et al., 2006) and Nock's (2009) integrated model of NSSI, the current study tested a moderated mediation model to examine the impact of two risk factors, childhood abuse and depression, and one protective factor, self-compassion, on NSSI. METHODS: Self-report measures were conducted among 758 Chinese adolescents (329 females and 429 males, mean age = 14.

Self-compassion mediates treatment effects in MDMA-assisted therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe condition often complicated by co-occurring disorders, such as major depression, alcohol use disorder, and substance use disorders. A well-powered phase 3 randomized, placebo-controlled trial has shown that MDMA-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) may be an effective treatment for severe PTSD. However, the psychological mechanisms driving the therapeutic effects of MDMA-AT remain unclear. One potential mechanism is self-compassion, which is commonly conceptualized as a balance between compassionate self-responding (CS) - encompassing self-kin

Attachment style, thought suppression, self-compassion and depression: Testing a serial mediation model.

Attachment anxiety has been consistently linked with increased vulnerability to depression, and hyperactivating emotion regulation strategies (e.g., rumination) have been shown to mediate this relationship. Investigations of mediators of the attachment avoidance to depression relationship have yielded inconsistent findings, and the nature of this relationship remains to be clarified. There is evidence to suggest that the constructs of thought suppression and self-compassion are associated with attachment avoidance and also with depressive symptomology. In order to further clarify the nature of

Feasibility and efficacy of an online compassion-focused imagery intervention for veterinarian self-reassurance, self-criticism and perfectionism.

BACKGROUND: Veterinarians report high levels of psychological distress and self-criticism. However, there is minimal research investigating psychological interventions for veterinarians. Evidence suggests that compassion-focused therapy is effective at reducing distress in those with high self-criticism. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a 2-week online compassionate imagery intervention for veterinarians. METHODS: A one-group repeated measures design was used with 128 veterinarians. Participants completed measures of perfectionism, self-criticis

Compassion-Focused Therapy for non-suicidal self-injury, shame, and self-criticism in adolescent girls: A pilot study.

Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common among adolescents and is often associated with suicidal behaviour. NSSI generally functions as a dysfunctional emotion regulation strategy maintained by shame and self-criticism. Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) aims to modify these processes through developing self-compassion.Objective: This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of CFT in reducing NSSI behaviours, shame, and self-criticism in adolescent girls engaging in NSSI.Methods: In this pilot quasi-experimental study, 30 self-harming adolescent girls (me

Self-compassion, mental health, and emotion regulation in adults with temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: People with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are at increased risk of mental health difficulties, most commonly anxiety and depression. Self-compassion, comprised of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, has been associated with better mental health in wider epilepsy populations. Previous research also suggests that self-compassion may be protective by fostering better emotion regulation. However, this has not been studied in TLE. AIMS: To (1) compare adults with TLE, other types of epilepsy (non-TLE), and without epilepsy (non-epilepsy) on measures of self-compassion, anxi

Exploring relationships between self-compassion, impostor phenomenon, and mental health among doctoral students.

INTRODUCTION: Impostor phenomenon (IP) is widespread in doctoral education and is strongly linked to mental distress. Self-compassion is theoretically and empirically positioned as a counterbalance to the harsh self-evaluation embedded in IP, yet large-scale evidence in doctoral populations is limited. METHODS: A national sample of 1,225 U.S. doctoral students completed validated measures of IP, self-compassion, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Data were collected via online survey. Analyses included descriptive statistics, correlations, MANOVA tests comparing mental health across IP tert

Disordered eating behaviours, self-compassion, and psychological distress in Canadian general surgery residents.

BACKGROUND: Surgical residents experience higher levels of negative stress and helplessness compared to the general population. Studies have linked stress to negative eating habits. Despite the high stress and burnout among surgical residents, studies on their disordered eating behaviors remain limited. Understanding the factors contributing to these findings will help optimize mental health during residency training. METHODS: This study is a mixed-methods cross-sectional survey of all general surgery residents in Canada. The survey assessed disordered eating, quality of life, and self-compas
