Event-related brain potentials in a patient with akinetic mutism.

The clinical pattern of complete akinetic mutism (AM) was observed in a patient with a bilateral infarction of the anterior cerebral arteries extending to the rostral cingulate cortex and the supplementary motor areas. Since the patient was unable to produce any overt response, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to obtain information about cortical processing of stimuli. Oddball tasks with simple acoustical stimuli and semantic categories were used. Verbal processing was further assessed by comparing event-related potentials to words compatible versus incompatible to the semantic

Visual features drive the category-specific impairments on categorization tasks in a patient with object agnosia.

Object and scene recognition both require mapping of incoming sensory information to existing conceptual knowledge about the world. A notable finding in brain-damaged patients is that they may show differentially impaired performance for specific categories, such as for "living exemplars". While numerous patients with category-specific impairments have been reported, the explanations for these deficits remain controversial. In the current study, we investigate the ability of a brain injured patient with a well-established category-specific impairment of semantic memory to perform two categoriz

An interdisciplinary approach aiding the diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia: A case report.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of the most common causes of early-onset dementia with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) being the second-most-frequent form of this degenerative disease. Despite the similarity with progressive dementia (especially in early stages of Alzheimer´s disease), three types of PPA can be differentiated: semantic, agrammatic and logopenic (subtype discussed in this study). To date, no medications have been shown to improve or stabilize cognitive deficits in patients with PPA. We report the case of a 62-year-old woman with difficulty naming objects and planning. An

Imageability effect on the functional brain activity during a naming to definition task.

Lexical competence includes both the ability to relate words to the external world as accessed through (mainly) visual perception (referential competence) and the ability to relate words to other words (inferential competence). We investigated the role of visual imagery in lexical inferential competence by using an auditory version of an inferential naming-to-definition task, in which visual imageability of both definitions and target words was manipulated. A visual imageability-related brain activity (bilateral posterior-parietal lobe and ventrotemporal cortex, including fusiform gyrus) was f

An experimental investigation of DSM-IV binge-eating criteria.

OBJECTIVE: The influence of quantity, duration, and loss of control on binge judgments and their semantic meaning was explored in binge eaters, controls, and psychologists. METHOD: Vignettes of an actress eating were rated on binge and semantic differential scales in a 2 (quantity) x 2 (duration) x 2 (loss of control) experimental design. RESULTS: Participants rated episodes involving a large quantity of food or loss of control as higher on the binge scale. Episodes were rated as more binge-like if a large amount of food was consumed over a short (vs. long) interval and when loss of control

Dissociating frequency and animacy effects in visual word processing: An fMRI study.

In an fMRI investigation of the neural representation of word frequency and animacy, participants read high- and low-frequency words within living and nonliving semantic categories. Both temporal (left fusiform gyrus) and parietal (left supramarginal gyrus) activation patterns differentiated between animal and tool words after controlling for frequency. Activation patterns in a smaller ventral temporal region, a subset of the voxels identified in the animacy contrast, differentiated between high- and low-frequency words after controlling for animacy. Activation patterns in the larger temporal

Reading Epilepsy and Language Processing: A Proposed Role for Semantic Salience.

Reading epilepsy is a relatively rare reflex epilepsy syndrome that typically presents as orofacial reflex myoclonus triggered by reading. Seizures are thought to be because of activation of hyperexcitable language-related pathways in the dominant hemisphere that subsequently spreads to adjacent motor cortices. More difficult reading tasks are thought to be more provocative of seizures regardless of semantic understanding of the text. The authors sought to better characterize the role of text difficulty and comprehension in triggering seizures in a 27-year-old patient with reading epilepsy. As

An integrative NLP framework identifies multilevel linguistic phenotypes of schizophrenia across tasks.

BACKGROUND: Linguistic abnormalities in schizophrenia (SCZ) span morphological, syntactic, semantic, and discourse levels. Converging cross-linguistic evidence suggests that SCZ may involve semantic narrowing alongside reduced syntactic differentiation, yet how these changes co-occur across linguistic domains and whether they represent core, task-general disturbances remains unclear. We applied a multilevel NLP framework to a large Japanese dataset to identify structurally related linguistic markers of SCZ across elicitation contexts. METHODS: Speech from 104 patients with SCZ and 101 healthy

Automated item-level measures of verbal fluency in semantic and logopenic primary progressive aphasia.

INTRODUCTION: Verbal fluency tasks are widely used in primary progressive aphasia (PPA), but most studies rely only on total correct responses, overlooking qualitative features of the words produced. We applied a scalable computational framework to extract item-level features from fluency responses in semantic variant (svPPA) and logopenic variant PPA (lvPPA) to test their value for differential diagnosis. METHODS: We analyzed animal fluency responses from 113 participants (40 svPPA, 40 lvPPA, 33 controls) using an automated pipeline extracting nine psycholinguistic features. Group difference

The visuo-sensorimotor substrate of co-speech gesture processing.

Co-speech gestures are integral to human communication and exhibit diverse forms, each serving a distinct communication function. However, existing literature has focused on individual gesture types, leaving a gap in understanding the comparative neural processing of these diverse forms. To address this, our study investigated the neural processing of two types of iconic gestures: those representing attributes or event knowledge of entity concepts, beat gestures enacting rhythmic manual movements without semantic information, and self-adaptors. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, sys

Apathy, not depressive symptoms, as a predictor of semantic and phonemic fluency task performance in stroke and transient ischemic attack.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between apathy and cognition in patients with cerebrovascular disease. Apathy may result from damage to frontal subcortical circuits causing dysexecutive syndromes, but apathy is also related to depression. We assessed the ability of apathy to predict phonemic fluency and semantic fluency performance after controlling for depressive symptoms in 282 individuals with stroke and/or transient ischemic attack. METHOD: Participants (N = 282) completed the Phonemic Fluency Test, Semantic Fluency Test, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale,

Dissociating linguistic and non-linguistic gesture processing: electrophysiological evidence from American Sign Language.

A fundamental advance in our understanding of human language would come from a detailed account of how non-linguistic and linguistic manual actions are differentiated in real time by language users. To explore this issue, we targeted the N400, an ERP component known to be sensitive to semantic context. Deaf signers saw 120 American Sign Language sentences, each consisting of a "frame" (a sentence without the last word; e.g. BOY SLEEP IN HIS) followed by a "last item" belonging to one of four categories: a high-close-probability sign (a "semantically reasonable" completion to the sentence; e.g.

Modeling Brain Representations of Words' Concreteness in Context Using GPT-2 and Human Ratings.

The meaning of most words in language depends on their context. Understanding how the human brain extracts contextualized meaning, and identifying where in the brain this takes place, remain important scientific challenges. But technological and computational advances in neuroscience and artificial intelligence now provide unprecedented opportunities to study the human brain in action as language is read and understood. Recent contextualized language models seem to be able to capture homonymic meaning variation ("bat", in a baseball vs. a vampire context), as well as more nuanced differences o

The shared and unique neural correlates of personal semantic, general semantic, and episodic memory.

One of the most common distinctions in long-term memory is that between semantic (i.e., general world knowledge) and episodic (i.e., recollection of contextually specific events from one's past). However, emerging cognitive neuroscience data suggest a surprisingly large overlap between the neural correlates of semantic and episodic memory. Moreover, personal semantic memories (i.e., knowledge about the self and one's life) have been studied little and do not easily fit into the standard semantic-episodic dichotomy. Here, we used fMRI to record brain activity while 48 participants verified stat

Action-semantic and syntactic deficits in subjects at risk for Huntington's disease.

Frontostriatal networks play critical roles in grounding action semantics and syntactic skills. Indeed, their atrophy distinctively disrupts both domains, as observed in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and Parkinson's disease, even during early disease stages. However, frontostriatal degeneration in these conditions may begin up to 15 years before the onset of clinical symptoms, opening avenues for pre-clinical detection via sensitive tasks. Such a mission is particularly critical in HD, given that patients' children have 50% chances of inheriting the disease. Against this background,

Functional connectivity of semantic and default mode networks during narrative comprehension.

Understanding narratives requires at least transient access to the semantic system, to decode incoming content, and prolonged access to the default mode network to maintain and manipulate the narrative model. Subregions within the integrative semantic hubs in bilateral anterior temporal lobe appear differentially sensitive to the need to rapidly decode external input (exogenous processing) versus reflecting on context stored in the narrative model (endogenous processing). The latter is most consistently reported in the middle temporal gyrus portion of the hub, suggesting that this region serve

Comparison of semantic and phonological false memories in short- and long-term tests.

The Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm has been at the centre of false memory research. Whereas most work with this paradigm has examined memory at the long term and with semantically associated lists, the present study examines phonological and semantic false memories at both short- and long-term delays. In two experiments, participants studied short lists containing six (Experiment 1) or four (Experiment 2) items, either semantically or phonologically related to the same non-studied critical items (CI). Following each list, participants completed 36 trials of an immediate recognition ta
