[Osteoporosis and demineralization: a semantic confusion].

Osteoporosis is the most frequent demineralizing disease. However, when a demineralized vertebra is identified, other diseases must be ruled out in the course of diagnosis. Through three clinical cases, we analyze pitfalls that have delayed the diagnosis of one rare, but unfortunately lethal, aetiology: multiple myeloma.

Unraveling lexical semantics in the brain: Comparing internal, external, and hybrid language models.

To explain how the human brain represents and organizes meaning, many theoretical and computational language models have been proposed over the years, varying in their underlying computational principles and in the language samples based on which they are built. However, how well they capture the neural encoding of lexical semantics remains elusive. We used representational similarity analysis (RSA) to evaluate to what extent three models of different types explained neural responses elicited by word stimuli: an External corpus-based word2vec model, an Internal free word association model, and

Converging evidence for the neuroanatomic basis of combinatorial semantics in the angular gyrus.

Human thought and language rely on the brain's ability to combine conceptual information. This fundamental process supports the construction of complex concepts from basic constituents. For example, both "jacket" and "plaid" can be represented as individual concepts, but they can also be integrated to form the more complex representation "plaid jacket." Although this process is central to the expression and comprehension of language, little is known about its neural basis. Here we present evidence for a neuroanatomic model of conceptual combination from three experiments. We predicted that the

The left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus subserves language semantics: a multilevel lesion study.

Consequential works in cognitive neuroscience have led to the formulation of an interactive dual-stream model of language processing: the dorsal stream may process the phonological aspects of language, whereas the ventral stream may process the semantic aspects of language. While it is well-accepted that the dorsal route is subserved by the arcuate fasciculus, the structural connectivity of the semantic ventral stream is a matter of dispute. Here we designed a longitudinal study to gain new insights into this central but controversial question. Thirty-one patients harboring a left diffuse low-

The Quebec Semantic Memory Battery: Development, Standardization, and Psychometric Assessment of a Semantic Memory Battery in French.

OBJECTIVE: People with aphasia often experience semantic memory (SM) impairment. To improve diagnostic outcomes, SM tasks should recruit various sensory input channels (oral, written, and pictographic), permitting accessible, complete evaluation. There is a need for SM batteries for French-speaking Quebecers that use multiple input channels. The present study, therefore, describes the development of a novel French-language semantic battery: la Batterie québécoise de la mémoire sémantique (BQMS), the assessment of the BQMS's psychometric properties, and the establishment of normative data for t

A category-selective semantic memory deficit for animate objects in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia.

Data are mixed on whether patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia exhibit a category-selective semantic deficit for animate objects. Moreover, there is little consensus regarding the neural substrates of this category-selective semantic deficit, though prior literature has suggested that the perirhinal cortex and the lateral posterior fusiform gyrus may support semantic memory functions important for processing animate objects. In this study, we investigated whether patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia exhibited a category-selective semantic deficit for

Does surface dyslexia/dysgraphia relate to semantic deficits in the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia?

The semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (sv-PPA) is a degenerative condition which causes surface dyslexia/dysgraphia, resulting in reading/writing errors of irregular words with non-transparent grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences (e.g., 'plaid') as opposed to regular words (e.g., 'cat'). According to connectionist models, most authors have attributed this deficit to semantic impairments, but this assumption is at odds with symbolic models, such as the DRC account, stating that the reading/writing of irregulars relies on the mental lexicon. Our study investigated whether sv-PPA aff

[Language and semantic memory impairment in a patient with motor neuron disease and semantic dementia: a case report].

We report the rare case of a 59-year-old man with motor neuron disease and semantic dementia (SD-MND); SD-MND was in a very early stage, and its clinical progression, especially with regard to language impairment, and abnormalities on neuroimages were evaluated for 3 years. The patient complained only of difficulties in recalling names of acquaintances and in writing kanji characters. After 1 year, he experienced difficulty in describing common objects. He developed two-way anomia only in some words, which varied from day to day. His anomia was not category-specific and was noted even with res

Exploring multimodal semantic control impairments in semantic aphasia: evidence from naturalistic object use.

Semantic processing can break down in qualitatively distinct ways in different neuropsychological populations. Previous studies have shown that patients with multimodal semantic impairments following stroke - referred to as semantic aphasia (SA) - show deficits on a range of conceptual tasks due to a failure of semantic control processes in the context of prefrontal and/or temporoparietal infarction. Although a deficit of semantic control would be expected to impair performance in all modalities in parallel, most previous research in this patient group has focussed primarily on tasks employing

Preserved reading aloud with semantic deficits: evidence for a non-semantic lexical route for reading Chinese.

This article describes a Cantonese dyslexic patient with a dissociation between reading ability and oral naming, similar to previously reported cases of Chinese dyslexia. Additional semantic tests without pictorial input were given to localize his impairment to the semantic system. His largely preserved reading performance vis-à-vis semantic deficits, together with the absence of assembled phonology in Chinese, support a model of the Chinese lexicon in which reading can be achieved via two different lexical routes, one with semantic mediation and one without. The patient's poor ability to make

Deep dyslexia and semantic errors: a test of the failure of inhibition hypothesis using a semantic blocking paradigm.

Deep dyslexia is an acquired reading disorder that involves the production of semantic errors and the inability to read aloud nonwords successfully. Several explanations for this reading impairment posit multiple loci of damage to account for the various error types produced in deep dyslexia. In contrast, the failure of inhibition hypothesis suggests that damage in the phonological output lexicon alone can explain these errors. Specifically, this hypothesis proposes normal processing via orthographic and phonological reading routes, as well as an intact semantic system. However, slowed or redu

Semantic Prompt and Graph-Convolution-Structure Distillation Framework for Semantic Segmentation of Remote Sensing Images.

High-resolution remote sensing semantic segmentation plays a critical role in land-use monitoring, urban planning, and disaster response. However, its deployment remains challenging owing to modality heterogeneity, fine-scale object structures, and the high computational cost of current deep learning models. To address these challenges, we propose a semantic prompt and graph-convolution-structure distillation framework (SPGSNet-S ${}^{\ast } $ ), a compact, yet effective architecture that integrates multimodal feature enhancement with dual-path knowledge distillation (KD). Specifically, we des

Bigram semantic distance as an index of continuous semantic flow in natural language: Theory, tools, and applications.

Much of our understanding of word meaning has been informed through studies of single words. High-dimensional semantic space models have recently proven instrumental in elucidating connections between words. Here we show how bigram semantic distance can yield novel insights into conceptual cohesion and topic flow when computed over continuous language samples. For example, "Cats drink milk" is comprised of an ordered vector of bigrams (cat-drink, drink-milk). Each of these bigrams has a unique semantic distance. These distances in turn may provide a metric of dispersion or the flow of concepts

Verbal and non-verbal semantic impairment: From fluent primary progressive aphasia to semantic dementia.

UNLABELLED: Selective disturbances of semantic memory have attracted the interest of many investigators and the question of the existence of single or multiple semantic systems remains a very controversial theme in the literature. OBJECTIVES: To discuss the question of multiple semantic systems based on a longitudinal study of a patient who presented semantic dementia from fluent primary progressive aphasia. METHODS: A 66 year-old woman with selective impairment of semantic memory was examined on two occasions, undergoing neuropsychological and language evaluations, the results of which were

Temporal lobe lesions and semantic impairment: a comparison of herpes simplex virus encephalitis and semantic dementia.

Both herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) and semantic dementia (SD) typically affect anterior temporal lobe structures. Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), this study compared the structural damage in four HSVE patients having a semantic deficit particularly affecting knowledge of living things and six SD patients with semantic impairment across all categories tested. Each patient was assessed relative to a group of control subjects. In both patient groups, left anterior temporal damage extended into the amygdala. In patients with HSVE, extensive grey matter loss was observed predominant

Rethinking psychometrics through LLMs: how item semantics shape measurement and prediction in psychological questionnaires.

Psychological questionnaires are typically designed to measure latent constructs by asking respondents a series of semantically related questions. But what if these semantic relationships, rather than reflecting only the underlying construct, also impose their own structure on the data we collect? In other words, to what extent is what we "measure" in questionnaires shaped a priori by item semantics rather than revealed solely a posteriori through empirical correlations? To examine this epistemological question, we propose LLMs Psychometrics, a novel paradigm that harness LLMs to investigate h

The use of lexical semantics for processing face-masked speech in monolinguals and bilinguals.

Face masks impede visual and acoustic cues that help make speech processing and language comprehension more efficient. Many studies report this phenomenon, but few examined how listeners utilize semantic information to overcome the challenges posed by face masks. Fewer still investigated this impact on bilinguals' processing of face-masked speech [Smiljanic, Keerstock, Meemann, and Ransom, S. M. (2021). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 149(6), 4013-4023; Truong, Beck, and Weber (2021). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 149(1), 142-144]. Therefore, this study aims to determine how monolingual and bilingual listeners use

Pearls & Oy-sters: Huntington Disease Presenting as Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Case of Semantics.

We present a case of semantic variant primary progressive aphasia as the presenting feature in a patient with Huntington disease (HD). The patient initially developed progressive language impairment including impaired naming and object knowledge and single-word comprehension and then developed chorea and behavioral changes. An MRI of the brain showed left anterior temporal lobe and hippocampal atrophy. A neurologic FDG PET/CT showed reduced metabolism in the head of the left caudate nucleus. Huntingtin gene testing revealed an expansion of 39 CAG repeats in 1 allele. This case outlines the sub
