The vestibular portion of the inner ear, the three semicircular canals and their sensory cristae, is responsible for detecting angular head movements. It was proposed that sensory cristae induce formation of their non-sensory components, the semicircular canals. Here, we analyzed the inner ears of Foxg1(-/-) mouse mutants, which display vestibular defects that are in conflict with the above model. In Foxg1(-/-) ears, the lateral canal is present without the lateral ampulla, which houses the lateral crista. Our gene expression analyses indicate that at the time when canal specification is thoug

In this report, we discuss the pertinent bony, arachnoid, and neurovascular anatomy of vestibular schwannomas that has an impact on the surgical technique for removal of these tumors, with the goal of facial nerve and hearing preservation. The surgical technique is described in detail starting with anesthesia, positioning, and neurophysiological monitoring and continuing with the exposure, technical nuances of tumor removal, hemostasis, and closure. Positive prognostic factors for hearing preservation are also highlighted.

CONCLUSION: The singular neurectomy as described by Gacek in 1974 is an efficient procedure to control symptoms in case of intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), with an acceptable risk of postoperative sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). We postulate that this complication may not be a direct consequence of the surgical procedure but rather may be consecutive to the reactivation of the biological phenomenon that caused the BPPV. We also observed in one patient that BPPV may exist although no nystagmus can be elicited by provocative manoeuvres.

OBJECTIVE: The Usher's syndrome (USH) is composed of a group of inherited disorders characterized by a dual sensory impairment of the audiovestibular and visual systems. Despite the established hearing loss, few authors have investigated vestibular dysfunction in these patients. The aim of this article is to investigate otolith or ampullary dysfunction in a group of patients affected by USH by means of a diagnostic protocol using caloric vestibular tests, cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (C-VEMPs), ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (O-VEMPs), and video head impulse test

Morphometric evaluation of the infralabyrinthine approach to the internal auditory canal (IAC) was performed using 20 fresh human temporal bones in order to assess the exposure limitations, inherent risks and technical difficulties that may arise due to common anatomic variations of this region. While performing the infralabyrinthine approach to the IAC, minor problems such as an anteriorly placed sigmoid sinus were easily managed. However, in 50% of the specimens, this approach was limited due to variations of the jugular bulb, restricting access to the IAC. Sacrificing the endolymphatic duct

PURPOSE: We compared MRI of the membranous labyrinth in patients with chronic non-neoplastic inner ear disease and MR signs of labyrinthine fibrosis and controls depending on their age, in order to establish whether there were any MR differences regarding patient age groups, control age groups and between the patients and controls themselves.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical ENT examinations as well as a T2* weighted 3D CISS (Constructive Interference in Steady State) sequence with a slice thickness of 0.7 mm were performed. Our collective was subdivided as follows: 0-19 years (10 controls, 3

Organization of the vertebrate inner ear is mainly dependent on localized signals from surrounding tissues. Previous studies demonstrated that sonic hedgehog (Shh) secreted from the floor plate and notochord is required for specification of ventral (auditory) and dorsal (vestibular) inner ear structures, yet it was not clear how this signaling activity is propagated. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which Shh regulates inner ear development, we examined embryos with various combinations of mutant alleles for Shh, Gli2 and Gli3. Our study shows that Gli3 repressor (R) is required for pa

A mature inner ear is a complex labyrinth containing multiple sensory organs and nonsensory structures in a fixed configuration. Any perturbation in the structure of the labyrinth will undoubtedly lead to functional deficits. Therefore, it is important to understand molecularly how and when the position of each inner ear component is determined during development. To address this issue, each axis of the otocyst (embryonic day 2.5, E2.5, stage 16-17) was changed systematically at an age when axial information of the inner ear is predicted to be fixed based on gene expression patterns. Kabuki syndrome (KS) is a rare developmental disorder principally comprised of developmental delay, hypotonia and a clearly defined dysmorphism: elongation of the structures surrounding the eyes, a shortened and depressed nose, thinning of the upper lip and thickening of the lower lip, large and prominent ears, hypertrichosis and scoliosis. Other characteristics include poor physical growth, cardiac, gastrointestinal and renal anomalies as well as variable behavioral issues, including autistic features. De novo or inherited pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in the KMT2D gene are the most c
