Mechanisms Underlying Overactive Bladder and Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome.

The bladder is innervated by extrinsic afferents that project into the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, providing sensory input to the micturition centers within the central nervous system. Under normal conditions, the continuous activation of these neurons during bladder distension goes mostly unnoticed. However, for patients with chronic urological disorders such as overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) and interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS), exaggerated bladder sensation and altered bladder function are common debilitating symptoms. Whilst considered to be separate pathologi

Modeling the development of panic disorder with interoceptive conditioning.

Panic disorder is characterized by the paroxysmal occurrence and fear of bodily symptoms. In recent years it has been proposed that patients "learn" to fear cardiorespiratory sensations through interoceptive conditioning. This study sought to model the initial stage of this process in healthy volunteers (N=44) using mild cardiac sensations. An additional aim was to explore whether anxiety sensitivity - a known risk factor for panic disorder - modulates such interoceptive learning. Infusions of pentagastrin and saline were used to manipulate the presence versus absence of cardiac sensations, re

Burning Mouth Syndrome: A Comparative Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) may be defined as a burning sensation in the oral mucosa usually unaccompanied by clinical signs. Multiple conditions have been attributed to a burning sensation. The aim of this study was to determine the role of age and sex in BMS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 195 consecutive patients with BMS and 95 healthy patients without burning sensation were recruited in this study. Patients with BMS had experienced oral, burning sensations for at least 6 months without oral clinical signs, and with a normal blood count. Multiple logistic regressio

Introduction to Supplement Issue: Sensory loss in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Sensory impairments (e.g., decreased function in hearing, vision, olfaction, and other senses) may be risk factors for or early markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD). Sensory impairments are common and have a large impact on wellbeing. Furthermore, they are clinically detectable and, often, treatable, and could be leveraged to identify and prevent AD/ADRD. This Supplement Issue brings together original research articles, reviews, and thought papers regarding the links between sensory impairments and cognitive health. Together, this work highlights the significant opp

Odor deprivation influences human olfactory function.

Odor deprivation leads to anatomical and neurochemical changes in the olfactory system, but its effect on human olfaction has not been systematically explored. The present randomized, controlled study aimed to investigate whether odor deprivation by different methods can affect olfactory function in humans. In the present study, sixty-one healthy participants were randomly assigned into three groups: a nasal device group (wearing an intranasal silicone air diversion system for 6-8 h daily), a mask group (wearing a filtering face piece for 6-8 h daily) and a control group (no special instructio

Mal de debarquement.

Mal de debarquement (MdD), the "sickness of disembarkment," occurs when habituation to background rhythmic movement becomes resistant to readaption to stable conditions and results in a phantom perception of self motion typically described as rocking, bobbing, or swaying. Although several studies have shown that brief periods of MdD are common in healthy individuals, this otherwise natural phenomenon can become persistent in some individuals and lead to severe balance problems. Increased recognition of MdD in a persistent pathological form occurred after the publication of a case series of six

Major Depressive Disorder as a Driver of Dual Systems Model Development During Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood Among Justice-Involved Youth: Is Salience Age-Graded?

The dual systems model is a psychological framework centered on differential development of sensation-seeking and impulse control during adolescence and emerging adulthood with implications for understanding antisocial behavior. However, there is a dearth of research which has examined mental illness as a driver of differential development of these constructs. This study examined major depressive disorder as a risk factor for elevated sensation-seeking and diminished impulse control and tested to determine whether the salience differed by age. The Pathways to Desistance data were analyzed. Mix

[Globus pharyngeus : etiologies, diagnosis and management. A narrative review].

Globus pharyngeus is a very common symptom in the general population. It is defined as a sensation of lump or foreign body in the throat, generally not accompanied by pain and relieved by eating. This last notion makes the differential diagnosis with dysphagia, which requires a different management. Its possible etiologies are complex and multiple, both organic and psychological, and many of them are still debated. Therefore, there is no consensus on the management and the treatment of globus pharyngeus. The purpose of this narrative review of the literature is to synthesize the current eviden

[Treatments of urination disorders in children (vesico-sphincteral disorders other than enuresis)].

Disorders of urination are a frequent cause of consultation in paediatric urology units, even when enuresis is excluded. These disorders consist of frequencies, dysuria, urgencies, burning sensation at voiding and incontinence. Since their mechanisms are diverse, their treatment should be increasingly specific.

Self-Disgust within Eating Disordered Groups: Associations with Anxiety, Disgust Sensitivity and Sensory Processing.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between self-disgust and sensory processing within eating psychopathology. Five hundred and ninety-one women with a self-reported diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or who had no previous history of an eating disorder completed a battery of online questionnaires measuring disgust, emotion and sensory variables. Those with an eating disorder reported significantly higher rates of self-disgust than those with no history of disordered eating. In groups of women with self-reported bulimia, self-disgust was associated with sensation avoidance

How does the lower urinary tract contribute to bladder sensation? ICI-RS 2023.

AIM: Bladder sensation is critical for coordinating voluntary micturition to maintain healthy bladder function. Sensations are initiated by the activation of sensory afferents that innervate throughout the bladder wall. However, the physiological complexity that underlies the initiation of bladder sensory signaling in health and disease remains poorly understood. This review summarises the latest knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the generation of bladder sensation and identifies key areas for future research. METHODS: Experts in bladder sensory signaling reviewed the literature on how t

Lump sensation in the throat caused by tumors in the preepiglottic space.

Lump sensation in the throat is a common symptom, which accounts for 4% of first patient visits to Otorhinolaryngologic clinics. The etiology includes abnormalities of the thyroid gland, cysts, tumors and chronic infections of the pharynx, larynx, esophagus and tongue base, gastroesophageal reflux and anxiety disorders. In this article we describe two rare cases of lump sensation caused by masses in the preepiglottic space and we stress the importance of thorough investigation to exclude any possible non functional causes.

Cooling the Skin: Understanding a Specific Cutaneous Thermosensation.

A patient recently presented with long-standing severe itching originating from lichen sclerosus et atrophicus at the vulva area. We successively treated her using a topical formulation of TRPM8 agonist which produces a cooling sensation. The cooling sensation, an afferent sensory perception in various skin neuronal pathways, could be a useful mechanism to relieve an itchy sensation in various skin disorders. Mechanoreceptors are related to touch vibration and pressure sensations and have a special morphology where the nerve endings are optimized to receive sensory inputs. However, unmyelinate

Platelet MAO activity in personality disorders and normal controls.

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been related to several psychiatric disorders and personality dimensions. The purpose of this study was to measure platelet MAO activity in personality disorders and determine its relationship to symptoms analogous to sensation seeking. Twenty-eight males admitted to a psychiatric unit with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of personality disorder were compared to normal controls. Patients with Axis I diagnoses other than adjustment disorder were excluded. There was no difference in MAO activity between patients and normals, although it was lower in borderline

Disorders of micturition in tabes dorsalis.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the disorders of micturition that occur in patients with tabes dorsalis can be attributed exclusively to disturbed bladder sensation, as has been previously suggested. Urodynamic studies were performed in 8 patients with tabes dorsalis who had no obvious organic obstructive urological disease. The results indicated that not only disturbed bladder sensation but also suprasacral and/or sacral lesions innervating the detrusor could be responsible for voiding dysfunction in such patients.

The non-motor syndrome of primary dystonia: clinical and pathophysiological implications.

Dystonia is typically considered a movement disorder characterized by motor manifestations, primarily involuntary muscle contractions causing twisting movements and abnormal postures. However, growing evidence indicates an important non-motor component to primary dystonia, including abnormalities in sensory and perceptual functions, as well as neuropsychiatric, cognitive and sleep domains. Here, we review this evidence and discuss its clinical and pathophysiological implications.
