Joint action with human versus robot partners across psychological domains: a systematic review.

When they act together, people engage a myriad of cognitive and social processes which are increasingly investigated in various areas of psychological and neuroscientific research. The study of human-robot joint action holds promises not only in terms of applying findings to robotics but also providing innovative methodologies that can help disentangle the determinants of human-human joint action. But, how does acting jointly with a robot compare to co-acting with a human? Research investigating this question is sparse and an overview of relevant findings is missing. Therefore, this paper prov

Metacognition of agency and theory of mind in adults with high functioning autism.

We investigated metacognition of agency in adults with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS) using a computer task in which participants moved the mouse to get the cursor to touch the downward moving X's and avoid the O's. They were then asked to make judgments of performance and judgments of agency. Objective control was either undistorted, or distorted by adding turbulence (i.e., random noise) or a time Lag between the mouse and cursor movements. Participants with HFA/AS used sensorimotor cues available in the turbulence and lag conditions to a lesser extent than control part

Large-scale neural systems linking bodily self-awareness and valuation in decision-making.

Adaptive decision-making depends on the integration of reward valuation with internal bodily and action-related signals; yet, this broader neural architecture is not fully captured by reward-centric models. Emerging evidence suggests that bodily self-awareness - including interoception and sense of agency - may shape reward-driven behaviour, but its large-scale neural organization and clinical relevance remain unclear. Here, we integrated existing evidence to examine the systems-level relationship between neural circuits supporting bodily self-awareness and those involved in reward valuation.

Speakers' acceptance of real-time speech exchange indicates that we use auditory feedback to specify the meaning of what we say.

Speech is usually assumed to start with a clearly defined preverbal message, which provides a benchmark for self-monitoring and a robust sense of agency for one's utterances. However, an alternative hypothesis states that speakers often have no detailed preview of what they are about to say, and that they instead use auditory feedback to infer the meaning of their words. In the experiment reported here, participants performed a Stroop color-naming task while we covertly manipulated their auditory feedback in real time so that they said one thing but heard themselves saying something else. Illusion of agency in patients with Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome.

The sense of agency refers to the conscious experience of authorship and control over actions. The voluntary or involuntary nature of tics, which are the hallmark of Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS), is unclear. Here, we studied metacognitive processing of agency in an explicit agency task on non-medicated and medicated GTS patients compared to matched controls. In this task, the participants made judgements of control and performance after completion of a computerized game where they had to catch targets with a cursor by moving the computer mouse. The task included several conditions, whe

Action-effect proximity, order, and predictability differentially modulate electrophysiological responses and explicit judgements of agency.

Attenuation of neural responses to self- versus externally generated stimuli is widely considered an implicit marker of the Sense of Agency and often interpreted within predictive processing and comparator frameworks. Agency is thought to arise from the integration of multiple cues, including action-effect timing and outcome predictability. How these factors jointly shape electrophysiological correlates of agency remains unclear. In this study, we manipulated the temporal relationship and pitch congruency of sounds generated by button presses to examine their effects on explicit agency judgmen

Did i do that? Cognitive flexibility and self-agency in patients with obsessivecompulsive disorder.

Self-agency can be understood as the ability to infer causal relationships between actions and sensory events. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients with checking compulsions often report lack of "action-completion" sensations, possibly due to an altered sense of agency in these patients. The present study aimed to investigate whether self-agency was related to cognitive flexibility in OCD checkers. In 18 adult OCD checkers and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy controls, cognitive flexibility was assessed with the Intra-Extra Dimensional Set Shift Task (IED). Self-agency attribution wa

Disrupted Corollary Discharge in Schizophrenia: Evidence From the Oculomotor System.

Corollary discharge (CD) signals are motor-related signals that exert an influence on sensory processing. They allow mobile organisms to predict the sensory consequences of their imminent actions. Among the many functions of CD is to provide a means by which we can distinguish sensory experiences caused by our own actions from those with external causes. In this way, they contribute to a subjective sense of agency. A disruption in the sense of agency is central to many of the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia, and abnormalities in CD signaling have been theorized to underpin particularly thos

Exposing operations of power in supervisory relationships.

Through a poststructural lens, we examine how power may show itself in relationships between supervisees and supervisors, producing both helpful and harmful effects. Drawing from our own experiences, as well as conversations with other members of our supervisory group, we demonstrate how privileged discourses around professional status, gender, and race may bring about difficulties including a sense of doubt, worry, inadequacy, and a fear of speaking up. We also illustrate how these difficulties can be addressed in a manner that may lessen their influence, while increasing supervisees' sense o

Self- and other-agency in people with passivity (first rank) symptoms in schizophrenia.

Individuals with passivity (first-rank) symptoms report that their actions, thoughts and sensations are influenced or controlled by an external (non-self) agent. Passivity symptoms are closely linked to schizophrenia and related disorders yet they remain poorly understood. One dominant framework posits a role for deficits in the sense of agency. An important question is whether deficits in self-agency can be differentiated from other-agency in schizophrenia and passivity symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate self- and other-agency in 51 people with schizophrenia (n=20 current, 10 past, 21 no

From home to street: understanding young people's transitions into homelessness.

This paper explores why young people leave home and become homeless. Drawing on life history interviews conducted with 50 homeless youth in Los Angeles, explanations provided by participants for becoming homelessness and how they understand their experiences are presented. In professional discourses, homeless young people are often portrayed as victims of physical abuse and emotional neglect. Although participants' narratives reveal that abuse and neglect play a central role in their decisions to leave home, many maintain a sense of agency in the recounting of how they became homeless. The imp

Between vulnerability and agency: inner dilemmas and adaptive self-reinvention among widowed older adults living alone in Southwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Against the current backdrop of low fertility and high internal migration in China, the traditional living arrangement in which widowed older adults co‑reside with adult children has become increasingly constrained. Many older adults now live alone following spousal loss. Existing studies have typically examined the consequences of widowhood in isolation or described the advantages and disadvantages of living alone in static terms, without integrating both dimensions into a dynamic, person‑centered framework of psychological adaptation. Therefore, situated within the sociocultural

EEG vs. Hybrid EEG-fNIRS BCI for FES Control in Healthy Subjects: A Blind Randomized Study and an Open Dataset.

Among the various brain-computer interface (BCI) modifications used in post-stroke rehabilitation, BCI systems combined with functional electrical stimulation (FES) are considered the most effective. As a preliminary step toward optimizing such systems for clinical application, it remains unclear whether using electroencephalography (EEG) alone versus a hybrid EEG and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) approach affects real-time three-class BCI-FES control performance in healthy individuals. In a blind randomized study, 16 healthy volunteers completed five BCI-FES training sessions

The impact of perceived human and computer interaction on collaborative learning: insights from the Map Task.

Learning new skills and information becomes more challenging as people get older, but learning collaboratively can provide benefits to learning in older age. Prior work has predominantly focused on improved learning in terms of accuracy and efficiency when interacting with another human compared to learning alone, while the potential benefits of a human learning with a computer are understudied. It has been reported that older adults learn more efficiently and accurately when they believe they are interacting with a human compared to a computer to perform the Barrier Task. In the current study

Testing the effects of schema-congruency and agency on collective memories by roleplaying a fictional collective identity.

The role of agency in collective memory is largely unexplored, and evidence that schema-congruent collective events are more readily integrated than incongruent ones remains largely correlational. Studying these factors experimentally is challenging because real-world collective identities are difficult to manipulate. To address this, we developed a novel paradigm in which 51 participants were trained about a detailed fictional state and collectively role-played its citizen identity for a week. After the training, participants played a role-playing game in which they made decisions during even

Altered Neural Correlate of the Self-Agency Experience in First-Episode Schizophrenia-Spectrum Patients: An fMRI Study.

BACKGROUND: The phenomenology of the clinical symptoms indicates that disturbance of the sense of self be a core marker of schizophrenia. AIMS: To compare neural activity related to the self/other-agency judgment in patients with first-episode schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (FES, n = 35) and healthy controls (HC, n = 35). METHOD: A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using motor task with temporal distortion of the visual feedback was employed. A task-related functional connectivity was analyzed with the use of independent component analysis (ICA). RESULTS: (1) During self-agency

Ending the Epidemic: Assessing Sexual Health Communication, Personal Agency, and HIV Stigma among Black and Latino Youth in the U.S.

Sexual health communication warrants greater attention as it may help to reduce the rates of HIV incidence among youth. A growing body of literature suggests that conversations about sexual health among Black and Latino youth may serve as a potential strategy for HIV prevention. The current study investigates whether sexual health communication-in particular, conversations about sexual health and HIV-influences Black and Latino youth's personal agency regarding their role in achieving an HIV-free generation. For this secondary data analysis, we used the National Survey of Teens and Young Adult

Patients' and parents' views on how digital tools enable personalized and partnered care in genetics: a qualitative study.

Patient-facing digital tools in genetics can increase efficiency and personalize care, but may threaten patient-provider relationships due to a diminished sense of connection associated with traditional face-to-face encounters. To learn about experiences with and preferences for using digital tools in the delivery of genetic services, semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients or parents of children who had clinical or research genetic testing. Direct experience with a digital healthcare tool was not required for inclusion. Data were analyzed thematically. A total of thirty partic

Neural substrates for judgment of self-agency in ambiguous situations.

The sense of agency is the attribution of oneself as the cause of one's own actions and their effects. Accurate agency judgments are essential for adaptive behaviors in dynamic environments, especially in conditions of uncertainty. However, it is unclear how agency judgments are made in ambiguous situations where self-agency and non-self-agency are both possible. Agency attribution is thus thought to require higher-order neurocognitive processes that integrate several possibilities. Furthermore, neural activity specific to self-attribution, as compared with non-self-attribution, may reflect hi

No effect of online cyberball social exclusion on interval estimation of action-outcome events.

Recent work suggests that feelings of social exclusion can attenuate feelings of agency, as indexed by temporal binding. However, existing evidence relies on heterogeneous manipulations of social exclusion and different operationalizations of temporal binding, raising questions about the generality of these effects. Across two pre-registered experiments, we examined whether the first-hand experience of social exclusion influences temporal binding as measured by the interval estimation task. Social exclusion and inclusion were manipulated using a within-subjects Cyberball paradigm administered
