Is a sense of coherence associated with prolonged grief, depression, and satisfaction with life after bereavement? A longitudinal study.

There is growing interest in psychological factors maintaining healthy functioning following adverse events. One such variable is a sense of coherence (SOC), an orientation to life comprising manageability, comprehensibility, and meaningfulness. Little research has examined the role of SOC in adjustment to bereavement. The present longitudinal study examined the role of SOC in recovery from loss, in a Danish sample (N = 221) of elderly spousally bereaved people. The aim was twofold. First, we aimed to establish the optimal measurement model of SOC, evaluating the fit of different factor soluti

Low sense of coherence interferes with lumbar spinal stenosis patients' postoperative recovery: a prospective one-year follow-up study.

In a prospective observational study (N = 97) we examined the changes in the SOC score after a surgical intervention for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and the factors associated with low and high SOC scores. Logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the predictors for the lowest SOC tertile. The post-surgical recovery among the low SOC group halted on three-month follow-up, whereas in the high SOC group a steady improvement was detected up to one year postoperatively. Preoperative and postoperative depressive symptoms were highly pertinent to the SOC of LSS patients, both as an indi

Personal sense of coherence and posttraumatic stress symptoms among internally displaced women exposed to the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon.

Women and girls affected by armed conflict and forced displacement are exposed to a high burden of potentially traumatic events, gendered insecurity, disrupted social networks, and barriers to mental health care. Evidence on protective psychological resources among internally displaced women in Central Africa remains limited. This study examined trauma load, personal sense of coherence (SoC), and sense of community coherence (SoCC) as predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity among women internally displaced by the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon. A sample of 133 female

Self-reported psychopathology, adaptive functioning and sense of coherence, and psychiatric diagnosis among young men--a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the associations between psychiatric disorders and self-perceived problems among adolescent boys. METHOD: The study population consisted of 2348 Finnish boys born during 1981 attending obligatory military call-up (79.7% of the original sample). At military call-up in 1999, the boys filled in the Young Adult Self-Report (YASR) and Orientation of Life Questionnaire (SOC-13). Information about psychiatric disorders was obtained from the national military register during the years 1999-2004. RESULTS: Most of the psychopathology, adaptive functioning and SOC scales were associ

Role of Sense of Coherence in Mediating the Relationship Between End-of-Life Caregiving Burden and Bereavement Depressive-Symptom Trajectory.

BACKGROUND: The results of meta-analyses indicate sense of coherence (SOC) has a positive effect in terms of reducing subjective caregiving burden and depressive symptoms in family caregivers. However, the mechanism by which SOC mediates psychological distress remains unexplored longitudinally. PURPOSE: This study was designed to examine how SOC mediates the impact of self-perceived caregiving burden on depressive symptoms during the first 2 years of bereavement following the care-recipient's death. METHODS: For this secondary analysis, 649 individuals who had provided end-of-life caregiving

Associations between maternal sense of coherence and controlling feeding practices: The importance of resilience and support in families of preschoolers.

Sense of Coherence (SOC) measures an individual's positive, or salutogenic, orientation toward her/his capacities, environment, future, and life. SOC comprises three factors: comprehensibility (the sense of one's own life as ordered and understandable); manageability (the perception of available resources and skills to manage stressors); and meaningfulness (the overall sense that life is filled with meaning and purpose). In numerous studies, SOC has been associated with resilience to stress. However, associations between parental SOC and controlling feeding practices have yet to be studied. Th

Sense of Coherence as a Modifier of Income Inequalities in Self-Rated Oral and General Health: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a stronger Sense of Coherence (SOC) modifies the association between low household income and poor self-rated dental and general health measures (SRDH and SRGH, respectively). METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data from the Dental Care and Oral Health Study (DCOHS, 2015-2016) in South Australia (n = 3664). In multivariate Poisson regression models, the main effects, interactions and effect modifications of SOC in the association between income and SRDH and SRGH were estimated using prevalence ratios (PRs) for poor self-rated health. Elevated risk of alcohol use disorder in Japanese men living with HIV: Psychosocial determinants and protective role of sense of coherence.

BACKGROUND: Men living with HIV face elevated risks for alcohol use disorder (AUD), yet few studies have examined sociodemographic and psychosocial correlates of AUD risk in Asian populations. Sense of coherence (SOC), reflecting the ability to cope with stress, may serve as a protective factor against AUD. This study investigated factors associated with AUD risk among men living with HIV in Japan. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the third HIV Futures Japan nationwide survey (November 2019-July 2020). Of 908 respondents, 883 biologically male participants who completed

Predictors of Students' Mental Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Impact of Coping Strategies, Sense of Coherence, and Social Support.

Young people and women seem to suffer more from social restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic than do others. Findings from pre-pandemic surveys identified students as a specific risk group for developing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Recent studies have indicated that students especially denoted a decrease in mental health during the pandemic. In a sample of n = 1938 university students (67.6% female), we investigated protective factors that are associated with mental health (defined as the absence of any mental disorder) and more specifically, the absence of major depression during the

Incremental validity of sense of coherence, neuroticism, extraversion, and general self-efficacy: longitudinal prediction of substance use frequency and mental health.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated the importance of sense of coherence (SOC), neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), and general self-efficacy (GSE) for health, yet the unique utility of these overlapping constructs remains uncertain. The present research aims at exploring incremental validity when predicting (1) substance use specifically and (2) mental health generally among adolescents. METHODS: A prospective and longitudinal design was used to predict (1) initial substance use nine years into the future and (2) mental health one year and four years into the future. Participants we

Sense of Coherence in patients with stable schizophrenia: multidimensional determinants from a cross-sectional study of 438 inpatients in Guangzhou, China.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia, a chronic psychiatric disorder, profoundly affects social functioning and quality of life. The Sense of Coherence (SOC), a core construct in salutogenic theory, plays a pivotal role in stress coping and recovery outcomes. While SOC has been studied in general populations, its determinants in stabilized schizophrenia inpatients remain underexplored. This study comprehensively investigated the Sense of Coherence (SOC) profile among stabilized schizophrenia inpatients by assessing its current status, exploring the interrelationships between SOC and demographic factors
