Morphological specializations of mosquito CO2-sensing olfactory receptor neurons.

Hematophagous mosquitoes use CO2 as a key arousal signal that gates behavioral responses to host-derived cues. In Aedes aegypti, CO2 is detected by olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) housed in the sensory hairs (sensilla) on the maxillary palp. While the molecular mechanism and behavioral significance of CO2 sensing have been well studied in mosquitoes, the nanoscale three-dimensional structures of their CO2-sensing ORNs and associated cells have remained unclear. Using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy, we characterize the CO2-sensing cpA neuron and its odor-sensitive neighbors, c

Gustatory receptor neuron responds to DEET and other insect repellents in the yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Three gustatory receptor neurons were characterized for contact chemoreceptive sensilla on the labella of female yellow-fever mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti. The neuron with the smallest amplitude spike responded to the feeding deterrent, quinine, as well as N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide and other insect repellents. Two other neurons with differing spikes responded to salt (NaCl) and sucrose. This is the first report of a gustatory receptor neuron specific for insect repellents in mosquitoes and may provide a tool for screening chemicals to discover novel or improved feeding deterrents and repellen

The mouthparts of female Corethrella brakeleyi and C. wirthi (Diptera: Chaoboridae).

The mouthparts of female Corethrella brakeleyi and C. wirthi were studied using light and electron microscopy. Mandibles, hypopharynx and labium are highly sclerotized and are modified for obtaining blood meals. All structures were larger in C. brakeleyi than in C. wirthi except mandibular and hypopharyngeal teeth; these were smaller and more numerous in C. brakeleyi. The labium of both species terminates in peg-like structures which are similar to those reported from several genera of mosquitoes. Sensillae on the second segment of the maxillary palps appear to be identical to those described

Is predation by ants driving the evolution of tarantulas? First report of tarantulas (Araneae, Theraphosidae) actively using urticating setae against invertebrates.

The use of urticating setae by tarantulas from the Americas and the Caribbean has been known for centuries and is considered a defensive behavior against vertebrate predators. However, their passive use against invertebrates, such as parasitic fly maggots and ants, has also been recently proposed, but no active use of these setae against invertebrates has been observed or tested. In this study, eight tarantula specimens representing four different species from the family Theraphosidae were tested in twelve tests with the army ant Eciton burchelli and the carpenter ant Camponotus rufipes. Four

Immunolocalization of specific beta-proteins in pad lamellae of the digits in the lizard Anolis carolinensis suggests that cysteine-rich beta-proteins provides flexibility.

Knowledge of beta-protein (beta-keratin) sequences in Anolis carolinensis facilitates the localization of specific sites in the skin of this lizard. The epidermal distribution of two new beta-proteins (betakeratins), HgGC8 and HgG13, has been analyzed by Western blotting, light and ultrastructural immunocytochemistry. HgGC8 includes 16 kDa members of the glycine-cysteine medium-rich subfamily and is mainly expressed in the beta-layer of adhesive setae but not in the setae. HgGC8 is absent in other epidermal layers of the setae and is weakly expressed in the beta-layer of other scales. HgG13 co

Case Report: Ophthalmia Nodosa Caused by Caterpillar Setae.

Caterpillars can damage human health, including visual acuity, as a result of penetration of the setae into the eye or their layout on the eye tissue. However, the path of setae movement in the eye remains unclear. In this study, a 43-year-old woman was injured in the left eye by a caterpillar. Other than rubbing her eye, the patient did not attempt any type of treatment, and she visited our outpatient clinic 5 days after the accident. The patient's left eyelid was markedly swollen, with a visual acuity of 1.0 in the right eye and only 0.04 in the left eye. Images of the setae in the eye were

A case of panuveitis caused by caterpillar setae.

INTRODUCTION: Panuveitis is a serious inflammatory disease. Setae are fibers produced by many insects and plants. Many case reports have described caterpillar and spider fibers entering the eye. These hairs are covered with tiny barbs that help them enter and migrate into the eye tissue, leading to severe inflammation. Normally, they are buried mainly in the conjunctiva and cornea. However, in the present case, they entered the posterior segment of the eye, which is very rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A female patient presented with a complaint of repeated foreign body sensation, redness, pain, and

Variation in Morphology and Airborne Dispersal of the Urticating Apparatus of Ochrogaster lunifer (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae), an Australian Processionary Caterpillar, and Implications for Livestock and Humans.

True setae borne on the abdominal tergites of Ochrogaster lunifer Herrich-Schӓffer caterpillars are the agents of an irritating contact dermatitis, osteomyelitis, ophthalmia, and severe allergic reactions in humans, and are the cause of Equine Amnionitis and Fetal Loss in Australia. The setae are detached and readily dislodge from the integument whereby they disperse throughout the environment. To better understand the true setae of O. lunifer as agents of medical and veterinary concern, we studied their characteristics and distance dispersed. Whereas members of the European Thaumetopoeinae ha

Ovipositor morphology of cosmetid harvestmen (Arachnida, Opiliones, Laniatores): a new source of informative characters.

The external morphology of the penis is an important source of systematic characters in phylogenetic studies of harvestmen. Modern taxonomic studies generally include micrographs generated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to illustrate penis morphology. In contrast, the external morphology of the ovipositor has largely been ignored for harvestmen belonging to the suborder Laniatores. Comparative studies of ovipositor microanatomy using SEM are especially lacking for species belonging to the superfamily Gonyleptoidea. In an effort to determine if the ovipositor could be a useful source of

Size and dispersion of urticating setae in three species of processionary moths.

Larvae of the processionary moths of the Palaearctic region bear urticating setae that are released against vertebrate predators, especially insectivorous birds. A few species are pests of forest and urban trees and, consequently, may threaten human and animal health during outbreaks, causing dermatitis, conjunctivitis and respiratory distress. Although some studies provide detailed information about the setae, particularly those of the pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa, there is little knowledge on the morphological traits of the setae and their release by the larvae. In the pre

Growth and structural features of the adult stage of Ascaris suum (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea) from experimentally infected domestic pigs.

For studying the morphogenesis of the adult stage of Ascaris suum, worms were obtained from experimentally infected domestic pigs. Structural and morphometric features of A. suum are analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that the increase in length of the worm from days 35 to 56 is based on a region-specific lengthening of individual transverse annuli in the cuticle. An increased worm size also results in an increased diameter of different cuticular sense organs. It is shown that a pair of lateral midbody papillae, the centrids, are prominent sensilla in the adult ma

Chemoreceptor proteins in the Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus: Expression of Ionotropic Receptors, Gustatory Receptors, and TRP channels in two chemosensory organs and brain.

The spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, has two classes of chemosensilla representing "olfaction" and "distributed chemoreception," as is typical for decapod crustaceans. Olfactory sensilla are found exclusively on antennular lateral flagella and are innervated only by olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) that project into olfactory lobes organized into glomeruli in the brain. Distributed chemoreceptor sensilla are found on all body surfaces including the antennular lateral flagella (LF) and walking leg dactyls (dactyls), and are innervated by both chemoreceptor neurons (CRNs) and mechanoreceptor neu

Descending interneurons of the stick insect connecting brain neuropiles with the prothoracic ganglion.

Stick insects respond to visual or tactile stimuli with whole-body turning or directed reach-to-grasp movements. Such sensory-induced turning and reaching behaviour requires interneurons to convey information from sensory neuropils of the head ganglia to motor neuropils of the thoracic ganglia. To date, descending interneurons are largely unknown in stick insects. In particular, it is unclear whether the special role of the front legs in sensory-induced turning and reaching has a neuroanatomical correlate in terms of descending interneuron numbers. Here, we describe the population of descendin

Biomechanics of substrate boring by fig wasps.

Female insects of diverse orders bore into substrates to deposit their eggs. Such insects must overcome several biomechanical challenges to successfully oviposit, which include the selection of suitable substrates through which the ovipositor can penetrate without itself fracturing. In many cases, the insect may also need to steer and manipulate the ovipositor within the substrate to deliver eggs at desired locations before rapidly retracting her ovipositor to avoid predation. In the case of female parasitoid ichneumonid wasps, this process is repeated multiple times during her lifetime, thus

Task specificity of local load feedback depends on intersegmental information in an insect walking system.

Load proprioceptive feedback measured by campaniform sensilla (CS) substantially contributes to the generation of leg stepping during walking. In stick insects, the effect of load feedback on the antagonistic protractor and retractor motor neurons (MNs) reverses depending on the walking direction to support the functional stance MN pool in both stepping directions. However, this was shown in highly reduced preparations in which the stimulated leg did not perform actual stepping movements, but the effect was inferred from MN activity profiles. It is still largely unknown whether load feedback s

Anatomical Investigation Reveals a Second Olfactory System in Locusts.

Olfaction in locusts offers a useful model for understanding how the brain encodes environmental information. While previous studies of olfaction in locusts have focused mainly on the antennal pathway, most insects, including locusts, possess olfactory receptors on their palps. Although they are traditionally considered to be gustatory or mechanosensory structures, accumulating molecular, electrophysiological, and behavioral evidence shows locust palps also mediate olfactory processing. The palps therefore initiate a second olfactory pathway, whose neural architecture and sensory functions rem

A gustatory receptor mediates sucrose detection to enhance moth reproductive fitness.

The mutualism between pollinators and flowering plants is a fundamental interaction in ecosystems, mediated by nectar rewards. Sucrose, a major component of floral nectar, is a key driver of pollinator foraging, yet the sensory mechanisms underlying sucrose detection are poorly defined. Here we demonstrate that the pollinator Mythimna separata exhibits a strong sex-independent preference for sucrose, which directly enhances reproductive fitness. We identify MsepGR5, a gustatory receptor expressed in antennal sensilla chaetica, as a key receptor mediating sucrose detection. Crucially, genetic a

Resin models of Drosophila strain sensors highlight mechanical pre-filtering of sensory inputs.

Locomotion can be modified and reinforced through the utilization of sensory feedback. A type of sensory structure, commonly found in the legs of insects, is strain sensors called campaniform sensilla (CS). These are embedded in the rigid cuticle and commonly found in groups and fields, some of which contain a variety of CS sizes and orientations. The CS groups and fields on the legs are consistent across individuals of the same species, but the topography of the local cuticle and the number of sensilla may vary. In order to investigate the effect of these variations on force encoding, we util
