Structural damage to the corticospinal tract correlates with bilateral sensorimotor cortex reorganization in stroke patients.

Damage to the corticospinal tract (CST) in stroke patients has been associated with functional reorganization in the ipsilesional and contralesional sensorimotor cortices. However, it is unknown whether a quantitative relationship exists between the extent of structural damage to the CST and functional reorganization in stroke patients. The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between structural CST damage and motor task-related cortical activity in chronic hemiparetic stroke patients. In 10 chronic hemiparetic stroke patients with heterogeneous lesions, CST damage was

Quantitative EEG changes under various conditions of hyperventilation in the sensorimotor cortex of the anaesthetized cat.

The effects on the EEG rhythms recorded from the sensorimotor cortex (post-sigmoid gyrus) of anaesthetized cats were studied under 4 conditions of artificial mechanical hyperventilation (HV) before and after cervical bilateral vagotomy. In animals with intact vagus nerves, using visual examination, EEG changes were only observed within the 2nd min during HV produced by increased stroke volume (delta V) with associated hypocapnia. Quantitative EEG (qEEG) showed that, for the same increase in minute ventilation and the same degree of hypocapnia, delta V induced a greater and earlier relative dec

Distribution of thalamic input to different dendrites of a spiny stellate cell in mouse sensorimotor cortex.

A Golgi impregnated, gold-toned [2] spiney stellate cell from layer IV of mouse SmI cortex was reconstructed in three dimensions from serial thin sections to assess the apatial relationships of the synapses onto its dendrites. The distribution of thalamocortical (TC) synapses with the reconstructed dendrites is presented in this report. Thalamocortical axon terminals were labeled by lesion induced degeneration which, in mouse SmI cortex, may reliably indicate the numbers of thalamocortical axon terminals. Results indicate that thalamocortical synapses, which are distributed over most regions o

Distinct Neural Modes Carry Information About Attempted Grasp Timing and Force in the Sensorimotor Cortex.

Humans perform a variety of complex hand movements to manipulate objects, requiring precise control of changing forces. Understanding the role of sensorimotor cortex and the cortical dynamics underlying these actions is crucial for developing interventions that restore dexterous hand function after injury or disease. In this study, two male individuals with tetraplegia resulting from cervical spinal cord injury attempted a series of isometric grasps. Neural activity was recorded from the motor and somatosensory cortices using intracortical microelectrode arrays while participants attempted to

Characterizing Evoked Movement Patterns and Connectivity in Sensorimotor Cortex After Sensory Loss in Squirrel Monkeys.

Sensory feedback is crucial for movement execution, especially in the highly specialized skilled hand use in humans and other primates. Extensive sensory loss of tactile and proprioceptive inputs from the hand initially results in severe motor deficits, but recovery occurs gradually over time. To determine how sensory loss from one hand affects evoked forelimb movements from sensorimotor cortical areas, lesions were selectively placed in the ascending somatosensory pathway in the dorsal column in the cervical spinal cord (C5, DCL) of three squirrel monkeys. After 1 year of postlesion recovery,

Prior expectation enhances sensorimotor behavior by modulating population tuning and subspace activity in sensory cortex.

Prior knowledge facilitates our perception and goal-directed behaviors, particularly when sensory input is lacking or noisy. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the improvement in sensorimotor behavior by prior expectations remain unknown. In this study, we examine the neural activity in the middle temporal (MT) area of visual cortex while monkeys perform a smooth pursuit eye movement task with prior expectation of the visual target's motion direction. Prior expectations discriminately reduce the MT neural responses depending on their preferred directions, when the sensory evidence is we

Hippocampal connectivity with sensorimotor cortex during volitional finger movements: Laterality and relationship to motor learning.

Hippocampal interactions with the motor system are often assumed to reflect the role of memory in motor learning. Here, we examine hippocampal connectivity with sensorimotor cortex during two tasks requiring paced movements, one with a mnemonic component (sequence learning) and one without (repetitive tapping). Functional magnetic resonance imaging activity was recorded from thirteen right-handed subjects; connectivity was identified from sensorimotor cortex correlations with psychophysiological interactions in hippocampal activity between motor and passive visual tasks. Finger movements in bo

Theta and beta synchrony coordinate frontal eye fields and anterior cingulate cortex during sensorimotor mapping.

The frontal eye fields (FEFs) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) are commonly coactivated for cognitive saccade tasks, but whether this joined activation indexes coordinated activity underlying successful guidance of sensorimotor mapping is unknown. Here we test whether ACC and FEF circuits coordinate through phase synchronization of local field potential and neural spiking activity in macaque monkeys performing memory-guided and pro- and anti-saccades. We find that FEF and ACC showed prominent synchronization at a 3-9 Hz theta and a 12-30 Hz beta frequency band during the delay and prepa

Post-Movement Beta Activity in Sensorimotor Cortex Indexes Confidence in the Estimations from Internal Models.

UNLABELLED: Beta oscillations are a dominant feature of the sensorimotor system. A transient and prominent increase in beta oscillations is consistently observed across the sensorimotor cortical-basal ganglia network after cessation of voluntary movement: the post-movement beta synchronization (PMBS). Current theories about the function of the PMBS have been focused on either the closure of motor response or the processing of sensory afferance. Computational models of sensorimotor control have emphasized the importance of the integration between feedforward estimation and sensory feedback, and

Sensorimotor environment but not task rule reconfigures population dynamics in rhesus monkey posterior parietal cortex.

Primates excel at mapping sensory inputs flexibly onto motor outcomes. We asked if the neural dynamics to support context-sensitive sensorimotor mapping generalizes or differs between different behavioral contexts that demand such flexibility. We compared reaching under mirror-reversed vision, a case of adaptation to a modified sensorimotor environment (SE), with anti reaching, a case of applying an abstract task rule (TR). While neural dynamics in monkey posterior parietal cortex show shifted initial states and non-aligned low-dimensional neural subspaces in the SE task, remapping is achieved

Primary Sensorimotor Cortex Drives the Common Cortical Network for Gamma Synchronization in Voluntary Hand Movements.

Background: Gamma synchronization (GS) may promote the processing between functionally related cortico-subcortical neural populations. Our aim was to identify the sources of GS and to analyze the direction of information flow in cerebral networks at the beginning of phasic movements, and during medium-strength isometric contraction of the hand. Methods: We measured 64-channel electroencephalography in 11 healthy volunteers (age: 25 ± 8 years; four females); surface electromyography detected the movements of the dominant hand. In Task 1, subjects kept a constant medium-strength contraction of t

High frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex modulates sensorimotor cortex function in the transition to sustained muscle pain.

Based on reciprocal connections between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and basal-ganglia regions associated with sensorimotor cortical excitability, it was hypothesized that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left DLPFC would modulate sensorimotor cortical excitability induced by muscle pain. Muscle pain was provoked by injections of nerve growth factor (end of Day-0 and Day-2) into the right extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle in two groups of 15 healthy participants receiving 5 daily sessions (Day-0 to Day-4) of active or sham rTMS. Muscle pain sc

Early Exercise after Intracerebral Hemorrhage Inhibits Inflammation and Promotes Neuroprotection in the Sensorimotor Cortex in Rats.

The present study examined the effect of early exercise on brain damage and recovery of motor function following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in rats. Subjects were randomly assigned to no training after ICH (ICH), no training after sham surgery (SHAM), early treadmill exercise after ICH (ICH + ET), and late treadmill exercise after ICH (ICH + LT) groups. The ICH + ET and ICH + LT groups were trained for seven consecutive days starting on day 2 and day 9 after surgery, respectively. At post surgery day 16, the brain was surgically excised, and lesion volume, cortical thickness, neuronal numb

Changes in Neuronal Density of the Sensorimotor Cortex and Neurodevelopmental Behaviour in Neonatal Mice with Kaolin-Induced Hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrocephalus is a disorder in which the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid is altered in a manner that leads to its accumulation in the ventricles and subarachnoid space. Its impact on the neuronal density and networks in the overlying cerebral cortex in a time-dependent neonatal hydrocephalic process is largely unknown. We hypothesize that hydrocephalus will affect the cytoarchitecture of the cerebral cortical mantle of neonatal hydrocephalic mice, which will in turn modify sensorimotor processing and neurobehaviour. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to probe the effect

Dendritic and Synaptic Degeneration in Pyramidal Neurons of the Sensorimotor Cortex in Neonatal Mice With Kaolin-Induced Hydrocephalus.

Obstructive hydrocephalus is a brain disorder in which the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is altered in a manner that causes expansion of fluid-filled intracranial compartments particularly the ventricles. The pyramidal neurons of the sensorimotor cortex are excitatory in nature and their dendritic spines are targets of excitatory synapses. This study evaluated the effect of hydrocephalus on dendritic arborization and synaptic structure of the pyramidal neurons of the sensorimotor cortex of neonatal hydrocephalic mice. Sterile kaolin suspension (0.01 ml of 250 mg/mL) was injected int

Disconnected and Hyperactive: A Replication of Sensorimotor Cortex Abnormalities in Patients With Schizophrenia During Proactive Response Inhibition.

Inhibitory failure represents a core dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia (SP), which has predominantly been tested in the literature using reactive (ie, altering behavior after a stimulus) rather than proactive (ie, purposefully changing behavior before a stimulus) response inhibition tasks. The current study replicates/extends our previous findings of SP exhibiting sensorimotor cortex (SMC) hyperactivity and connectivity abnormalities in independent samples of patients and controls. Specifically, 49 clinically well-characterized SP and 54 matched healthy controls (HC) performed a proac

A transcranial direct current stimulation over the sensorimotor cortex modulates the itch sensation induced by histamine.

OBJECTIVE: Itching can be suppressed by scratching. However, scratching may aggravate itch symptoms by damaging the skin. Therefore, identifying an alternative approach to suppress itching is of clinical importance. The aim of the present study was to determine whether a transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was useful for itch relief. METHODS: The present study was performed on a double-blind, Sham-controlled, and cross-over experimental design. A histamine-induced itch was evoked on the left dorsal forearms of healthy participants, who were asked to report the subjective sensation

Inhibition of the primary sensorimotor cortex by topical anesthesia of the forearm in patients with complex regional pain syndrome.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type I is characterized by somatosensory and motor deficits, and abnormalities have been reported for primary somatosensory (S1) and motor cortex (M1) excitability. For the latter, reduced short-latency intracortical inhibition (SICI) has been demonstrated in the somatotopic representation of the affected side. Recently, an intervention of applying anesthetic cream to the forearm has been shown to modulate both somatosensory deficits (eg, spatial tactile resolution [STR]) and SICI measured in hand muscles. We examined the efficacy of this intervention in p

Effect of emotional stress on biogenic amine content in the sensorimotor cortex of rats with experimental intracerebral hemorrhage.

Experiments on the model of an aggressive-conflict situation were designed to study the effect of emotional stress on biogenic amine content in the sensorimotor cortex of the right cerebral hemisphere in behaviorally active and passive rats with experimental hemorrhage in the left caudate nucleus of the brain. Prior exposure to stress in active and, particularly, in passive animals was shown to modify the type of neurochemical reactions in brain tissue during modeling of intracerebral hemorrhage. As differentiated from rats with experimental hemorrhagic stroke, passive specimens of this series
