Clinical course of asthma patients with H1N1 influenza infection and oseltamivir.

BACKGROUND: H1N1 influenza virus prevailed throughout the world in 2009. However, there are few reports on the clinical features of H1N1 influenza infection in adult asthma patients. We evaluated the clinical features in asthma patients with H1N1 influenza infection who took oseltamivir and compared them to those with other upper respiratory infections. METHODS: We reviewed asthma patients over 15 years of age who had visited Seoul National University Hospital and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital for suspected H1N1 influenza infection from August 2009 to March 2010. Various clinical

Rodents and risk in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam: seroprevalence of selected zoonotic viruses in rodents and humans.

In the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam, rats are commonly traded in wet markets and sold live for food consumption. We investigated seroprevalence to selected groups of rodent-borne viruses among human populations with high levels of animal exposure and among co-located rodent populations. The indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) was used to determine seropositivity to representative reference strains of hantaviruses (Dobrava virus [DOBV], Seoul virus [SEOV]), cowpox virus, arenaviruses (lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus [LCMV]), flaviviruses (tick-borne encephalitis virus [TBEV]), and…

Comparison of sexual risky factors of men who have sex with men and sex-buying men as groups vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases.

OBJECTIVES: It is necessary to examine groups carrying out sexually risky behavior because the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is high among them. In this study, the prevalence of STDs among homosexuals and sex-buying men in South Korea was investigated, along with their sexual risk factors. METHODS: Men who have sex with men (MSMs, n=108) were recruited in Seoul and Busan by applying the time location sampling method, while sex-buying men (n=118) were recruited from a john school in Gyeonggi province, the suburbs of Seoul. Dependent variables included past or present infec

[Zoonoses transmitted by mouse and rat maintained as laboratory or pet animals].

Large numbers of mice (Mus spp.) and rats (Rattus spp.) are maintained for scientific reasons and as pet animals in Germany. While laboratory animals are monitored for pathogenic agents, the hygienic status of pet animals is usually completely unknown. Despite great efforts, zoonotic infections were reported even in laboratory settings, e.g. with Hantavirus (Seoul virus), Streptobacillus moniliformis, and Trichphyton mentagrophytes. However, in current reports, zoonotic infections were transmitted by mice and rats maintained as pet animals. This includes infections by Lymphocytic choriomeningi…

A Multi-Valent Hantavirus Vaccine Based on Recombinant Modified Vaccinia Ankara Reduces Viral Load in a Mouse Infection Model.

Background: Old World orthohantaviruses are the aetiological agent of Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) disease. Worldwide, the two most prominent pathogens of HFRS are Seoul orthohantavirus (SEOV) and Hantaan orthohantavirus (HTNV). There is currently no specific treatment nor widely licensed vaccine form hantaviruses. Methods: This study developed a virus-vectored vaccine approach using modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) incorporating a SEOV-HTNV chimeric nucleoprotein antigen. Results: The vaccine demonstrated the induction of humoral and cellular immunity. In the absence of a disea

Hantavirus Infections among Military Forces.

INTRODUCTION: Hantaviruses cause two kinds of clinical syndromes. Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is caused by Hantaan virus in Asia, Puumala virus (PUUV) and Dobrava virus in Europe, and Seoul virus worldwide. Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome is caused by Sin Nombre virus in North America and Andes virus and related viruses in Latin America. All hantaviruses are carried by rodents and insectivores. Humans are infected via inhaled aerosols of rodent excreta. In the history, there are several epidemics of acute infectious diseases during many wars, which have been suggested or proven t…

Neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies against Puumala virus, causative agent of nephropathia epidemica: a novel method using antigen-coated magnetic beads for specific B cell isolation.

Human monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against Puumala (PUU) virus were generated and characterized. Human spleen B lymphocytes were preselected for specific surface immunoglobulin (Ig) using magnetic beads coated with the viral glycoproteins, and subsequently immortalized by Epstein-Barr virus transformation. Four IgG-positive monoclonal lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) were established and have remained stable MAb secretors for over 12 months. Analyses of the antigen and epitope specificities recognized by the MAbs showed overlapping binding patterns of four anti-glycoprotein 2-specific clones.

Hepatitis B virus genotype C prevails among chronic carriers of the virus in Korea.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the major causative agents of chronic liver diseases in Korea. HBV has been classified into 8 genotypes by a divergence of >8% in the entire genomic sequence, and have distinct geographic distributions. There are limited data on the relevance between HBV genotypes and clinical outcomes in Korea. To investigate the clinical feature relating to HBV genotype in Korea, a total 120 serum samples with HBsAg (65 from Seoul and 55 from the other city in Korea) were obtained from each 30 chronic HBV carriers with asymptomatic carrier (ASC), chronic hepatitis (CH), live

Metagenomic analysis reveals Culex mosquito virome diversity and Japanese encephalitis genotype V in the Republic of Korea.

Recent outbreaks of emerging and re-emerging viruses have shown that timely detection of novel arboviruses with epidemic potential is essential to mitigate human health risks. There are rising concerns that emergent JEV genotype V (GV) is circulating in Asia, against which current vaccines may not be efficacious. To ascertain if JEV GV and other arboviruses are circulating in East Asia, we conducted next-generation sequencing on 260 pools of Culex tritaeniorhynchus and Culex bitaeniorhynchus mosquitoes (6540 specimens) collected at Camp Humphreys, Republic of Korea (ROK) in 2018. Interrogation

Evaluation of dogs (Canis familiaris) as an indicator of Japanese encephalitis (JE) outbreaks: A retrospective serological study in the Seoul metropolitan area around the 2010 resurgence of JE in the Republic of Korea.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic neurological disease caused by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). JEV is the most common cause of viral encephalitis in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific Rim. The fatality rate due to JE can reach 25% and up to 50% of the patients who survive develop permanent neurological damage. The annual incidence of human JE markedly increased in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in 2010 but the reason for the reemergence of JE in the ROK has not been established. This study aimed to assess the extent of exposure of domestic dogs to JEV in the Seoul m

The Orthohantavirus GN/GC Spikes: Molecular Determinants of Infection and Targets for Antiviral Immune Interventions.

Orthohantaviruses are globally distributed, rodent-borne RNA viruses associated with severe and often lethal disease in humans. The documented person-to-person transmission of Andes virus, endemic in South America, underscores their pandemic potential, and yet no effective treatments are available, while vaccines exist only for Hantaan and Seoul viruses. Key targets for antiviral intervention are the tetrameric GN/GC spikes, which are displayed on the viral surface. Here we review current molecular and cellular insights into these spikes, focusing on their roles during the viral infection cycl…

Genetic analyses of Seoul hantavirus genome recovered from rats (Rattus norvegicus) in the Netherlands unveils diverse routes of spread into Europe.

Seoul virus (SEOV) is the etiologic agent of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. It is carried by brown rats (Rattus norvegicus), a commensal rodent that closely cohabitates with humans in urban environments. SEOV has a worldwide distribution, and in Europe, it has been found in rats in UK, France, Sweden, and Belgium, and human cases of SEOV infection have been reported in Germany, UK, France, and Belgium. In the search of hantaviruses in brown rats from the Netherlands, we found both serological and genetic evidence for the presence of SEOV in the local wild rat population. To further dec…
