Would a morphomolecular approach help in defining pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferations? A study of a heart polypoid lesion.

Many cardiac neoplasms lack pathognomonic clinical features, and this leads to controversial interpretations. As genomic changes may correlate with these malignancies and possibly aid in diagnosis, fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) was used to study a polypoid lesion found incidentally at autopsy on the septal wall of the left ventricle of a 75-year-old man who had died from a heart attack. Histology and immunohistochemistry disclosed atypical stromal cells with irregular voluminous nuclei positive for vimentin and smooth muscle actin; these cells were reminiscent of those previously r

Changes in serotonergic neurons in the brain of pyrithiamine-induced acute thiamine-deficient mice.

We examined changes in 5-hydroxytriptamine (5-HT, serotonin) neurons in pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency in mice immunohistochemically. Extensive decreases in the densities of 5-HT-immunoreactive fibers were detected in the lateral septal nucleus, the thalamus, the medial mammillary nucleus, the dorsal and the median raphe nuclei, the raphe obscurus nucleus, the tegmental area, the cerebellum and the vestibular nucleus, though only a small decrease was detected in the inferior colliculus. Most remarkably, degenerative winding fibers were detected between the deep mesencephalic nucleus

Lateral Septum as a Key Integrative Regulator of Feeding: Role of the GLP-1/GLP-1R System.

The control of food intake represents a multifaceted process involving a dynamic interaction between various cerebral regions and peripheral signals. This control incorporates both homeostatic and hedonic systems, contingent upon whether it is responding to nutritional status or to the reward mechanisms associated with food consumption. The lateral septum (LS) functions as a pivotal neural relay center, exerting an effect on alimentary intake upon activation. Due to its extensive neural connections with other cerebral nuclei, the LS is integrated with circuits governing both homeostatic and he

Adolescent social anxiety is associated with diminished discrimination of anticipated threat and safety in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.

Social anxiety-which typically emerges in adolescence-lies on a continuum and, when extreme, can be devastating. Socially anxious individuals are prone to heightened fear, anxiety, and the avoidance of contexts associated with potential social scrutiny. Yet most neuroimaging research has focused on acute social threat. Much less attention has been devoted to understanding the neural systems recruited during the uncertain anticipation of potential encounters with social threat. Here we used a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm to probe the neural circuitry engaged during the a

Chronic pain enhances excitability of corticotropin-releasing factor-expressing neurons in the oval part of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.

We previously reported that enhanced corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) signaling in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) caused the aversive responses during acute pain and suppressed the brain reward system during chronic pain. However, it remains to be examined whether chronic pain alters the excitability of CRF neurons in the BNST. In this study we investigated the chronic pain-induced changes in excitability of CRF-expressing neurons in the oval part of the BNST (ovBNSTCRF neurons) by whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology. CRF-Cre; Ai14 mice were used to visualize CRF neuro

Subcortical serotonin 5HT2c receptor-containing neurons sex-specifically regulate binge-like alcohol consumption, social, and arousal behaviors in mice.

Binge alcohol consumption induces discrete social and arousal disturbances in human populations that promote increased drinking and accelerate the progression of Alcohol Use Disorder. Here, we show in a mouse model that binge alcohol consumption disrupts social recognition in females and potentiates sensorimotor arousal in males. These negative behavioral outcomes were associated with sex-specific adaptations in serotonergic signaling systems within the lateral habenula (LHb) and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), particularly those related to the receptor 5HT2c. While both BNST a

Deep brain stimulation in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis: A symptom provocation study in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an emerging therapy for treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and several targets for electrode implantation and contact selection have been proposed, including the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST). Selecting the active electrode contacts (patients typically have four to choose from in each hemisphere), and thus the main locus of stimulation, can be a taxing process. Here, we investigated whether contact selection based purely on their neuroanatomical position in the BST is a worthwhile approach. For the first time, we als

[The effect of epiphysectomy and destruction of the lateral septal nucleus of the brain on the genital system in juvenile rats under different light regimens (the interaction of gonadostat++ and photoperiodic mechanisms in the regulation of ovarian functions)].

Results of experimental investigations of the effect of the epiphysectomy and brain lateral septal nucleus (LSN) destruction on the morphofunctional conditions of the genital system of juvenile female white rats kept under different illumination conditions are described. The analysis of consequences of epiphysectomy and LSN destruction as well as of these operative influences taken together shows that the morphofunctional condition of the female genital apparatus changes more intensively in rats kept under the constant illumination and less intensively in those kept under variation of light an

The distribution and compartmental organization of the cholinergic neurons in nucleus accumbens of the rat.

In this study the distribution of the cholinergic neurons was examined in relation to the compartmental organization of nucleus accumbens. This was accomplished by charting the location of the choline acetyltransferase-immunoreactive neurons and mapping their distribution in relation to cytoarchitectural features and the patterns of acetylcholinesterase activity and enkephalin immunoreactivity. Choline acetyltransferase-containing perikarya are inhomogeneously distributed in nucleus accumbens. Their density is lowest at the rostral pole and highest, caudomedially, at the septal pole. The cells

Modulation of opioid peptide metabolism by seizures: differentiation of opioid subclasses.

Until now, we have measured dynorphin-ir and enkephalin-ir at only a few time points after a single seizure or after multiple seizures in most of the models we have employed. Except for the genetically seizure-prone gerbil, our data consistently show a transient and robust decrease in dynorphin-ir and a sustained increase in enkephalin-ir in the hippocampal formation subsequent to kainic acid-, ECS-, or amygdaloid-kindled convulsive seizures. At this point, kainic acid appears to have the most dramatic effects on hippocampal enkephalin and dynorphin levels, causing an initial decrease followed

Cytoarchitectonic study of the brain of a perciform species, the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). I. The telencephalon.

A cytoarchitectonic analysis of the telencephalon of the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, based on cresyl violet-stained serial transverse sections, is presented. Rostrally, the brain of the sea bass is occupied by sessile olfactory bulbs coupled to telencephalic hemispheres. The olfactory bulbs comprise an olfactory nerve fiber layer, a glomerular layer, an external cellular layer, a secondary olfactory fiber layer, and an internal cellular layer. Large terminal nerve ganglion cells are evident in the caudomedial olfactory bulbs. We recognized 22 distinct telencephalic nuclei which were classif

Forebrain neurons driven by rewarding stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle in the rat: comparison of psychophysical and electrophysiological estimates of refractory periods.

Psychophysically derived estimates of recovery from refractoriness were obtained at self-stimulation sites in the lateral hypothalamus and ventral tegmental area. The refractory periods of single units driven by the same stimulation electrodes and stimulation fields were then measured electrophysiologically. Antidromically driven units with refractory periods longer than those of the neurons responsible for the rewarding effect were concentrated in the septal complex. Units with refractory periods that overlapped the estimates for the reward-related neurons were found in this region as well bu

Reelin expression during embryonic brain development in Crocodylus niloticus.

The expression of reelin mRNA and protein was studied during embryonic brain development in the Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus, using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. In the forebrain, reelin was highly expressed in the olfactory bulb, septal nuclei, and subpial neurons in the marginal zone of the cerebral cortex, dorsal ventricular ridge, and basal forebrain. At early stages, reelin mRNA was also detected in subventricular zones. In the diencephalon, the ventral lateral geniculate nuclei and reticular nuclei were strongly positive, with moderate expression in the habenula

The Internal Cerebral Vein: New Classification of Branching Patterns Based on CTA.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The internal cerebral vein begins at the foramen of Monro by the union of the thalamostriate and the anterior septal veins. The lateral direct vein is its other major tributary. Numerous researchers have reported differences in internal cerebral vein branching patterns but did not classify them. Hence, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the anatomy of the internal cerebral vein and its primary tributaries and classify them depending on their course patterns using CTA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Head CTAs of 250 patients were evaluated in this study, in which we

Persistent c-fos expression in the brains of mice with chronic social stress.

The present study was conducted to demonstrate immunohistochemically, the sites of c-fos protein expression in the brains of mice subjected to acute and chronic social defeat stress. To induce social stress, mice were placed in situations of species-specific intermale aggression either only once or five times at 24 h intervals. Two hours after the single or fifth defeat stress, many c-fos immunoreactive neurons were observed in a variety of brain regions including the limbic system and sensory relay nuclei. The c-fos immunoreactive neurons in the brains of acute defeat mice decreased in number

Anterior olfactory organ removal produces anxiety-like behavior and increases spontaneous neuronal firing rate in basal amygdala.

Some chemical cues may produce signs of anxiety and fear mediated by amygdala nuclei, but unknown is the role of two anterior olfactory epithelial organs, the septal and vomeronasal organs (SO-VNOs). The effects of SO-VNO removal were explored in different groups of Wistar rats using two complementary approaches: (i) the assessment of neuronal firing rate in basal and medial amygdala nuclei and (ii) behavioral testing. Fourteen days after SO-VNO removal, spontaneous activity in basal and medial amygdala nuclei in one group was determined using single-unit extracellular recordings. A separate g

Organization of the galaninergic neuronal system in the brain of the gecko Hemidactylus frenatus.

Galanin (GAL) is a 29 amino acid peptide present in the central nervous system (CNS) as well as peripheral tissues in vertebrates. However, the brain distribution pattern of GAL is understudied in reptiles. The aim of this study was to determine the organization of galaninergic neuronal system in the brain of the gecko Hemidactylus frenatus, a tropical and sub-tropical lizard, using rabbit anti-galanin antibody. In the telencephalon, GAL-ir perikarya and fibres were found in the lateral septal nucleus, but only GAL-ir fibres were observed in the striatum, nucleus accumbens, anterior commissure

Distribution of gastrin-releasing peptide immunoreactivity in the brain of the collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto).

The distribution of immunoreactivity after applying an antibody against gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) was studied in the brain of the collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto). In the forebrain GRP-immunoreactive (GRP-ir) cells were found in the hyperstriatum accessorium, medial and lateral parts of the neostriatum, corticoidea dorsolateralis and temporoparieto-occipitalis areas, hippocampus, pre- and parahippocampal areas and prepiriform cortex. In the brainstem, GRP-ir cells were restricted mainly to the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental nucleus. Areas with densely packed GRP-ir clusters

Neurofibrillary tangles, amyotrophy and progressive motor disturbance in mice expressing mutant (P301L) tau protein.

Neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) composed of the microtubule-associated protein tau are prominent in Alzheimer disease (AD), Pick disease, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Mutations in the gene (Mtapt) encoding tau protein cause frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17), thereby proving that tau dysfunction can directly result in neurodegeneration. Expression of human tau containing the most common FTDP-17 mutation (P301L) results in motor and behavioural deficits in transgenic mice, with age- and gene-dose-dependent develo

A dorsolateral BNST-parabrachial nucleus pathway regulates adolescent alcohol-induced negative affect in females.

Adolescent alcohol use is a major predictor of alcohol use disorder in adulthood and coincides with a critical developmental window for the emergence of affective disorders. These comorbidities may heighten relapse vulnerability, particularly in females. Negative reinforcement mechanisms, in which alcohol alleviates negative emotional states, are thought to drive continued drinking. We previously demonstrated that chemogenetic stimulation of the dorsolateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (dlBNST) induces negative affect-like behavior in adult female mice with a history of adolescent inte
