The set-shifting profiles of anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum disorder using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Difficulties in set-shifting are commonly reported in both autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and anorexia nervosa (AN) populations. Despite this, it is not known whether this cognitive profile persists across different ages, or whether the profiles seen in ASD and AN are comparable. This systematic review and meta-analyses aimed to compare the set-shifting profiles, as measured by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) in adults and younger people with either ASD or AN, relative to healthy controls (HCs) and to statistically compare performance on the WCST between ASD and AN. In all, 24 studies o

Integrating predictive frameworks and cognitive models of face perception.

The idea of a "predictive brain"-that is, the interpretation of internal and external information based on prior expectations-has been elaborated intensely over the past decade. Several domains in cognitive neuroscience have embraced this idea, including studies in perception, motor control, language, and affective, social, and clinical neuroscience. Despite the various studies that have used face stimuli to address questions related to predictive processing, there has been surprisingly little connection between this work and established cognitive models of face recognition. Here we suggest th

International perspectives on lesbian psychology.

Researchers from the Philippines, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Chile, Canada, Brazil, China, and the US shed new light on important questions in lesbian psychology while subverting the hegemonic status of Western scholarship. Articles part of this special issue move away from treating LGBTQ + identity as a monolith and center lesbian identity. An eclectic set of contributions explore central questions in the field of psychology, including differences between gay men's and lesbian women's mental health as well as similarities and differences between bisexual and lesbian women's sense of identity. [Psychology in rehabilitation].

The article gives an overview of the importance and potentialities of psychology in the context of rehabilitation, outlining, among others, the psychologist's various tasks and functions relative to diagnosis, counselling, and therapy in medical, education, vocational, and psychosocial rehabilitation. Theories describing psychosocial factors involved in the development of, and in coping with, disability are discussed. Further, psychological intervention approaches are set out, focussing on their particular relevance to rehabilitation. Special attention is given to the psychologist's position w

Depression and cognitive style: comparisons between measures.

Several instruments have been developed recently to measure cognitive styles associated with depression. At least four of them appear to have an underlying similarity. Each appears to reflect a tendency for respondents to infer a general lack of self-worth (or a continued likelihood of bad events) on the basis of a single discrete failure. The present research was a comparative test of one of these scales against the other three in terms of associations with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores. Though all instruments were significantly correlated with BDI, partial correlations revealed that

From alienation to deficitization: the subjectivity predicament of digital laborers.

Contemporary research on digital labor confronts a methodological tension: while mainstream occupational health psychology offers rich empirical evidence on the psychological distress of digital workers, it fails to capture the more fundamental predicament of subjectivity underlying this distress-namely, Why, When formal autonomy has been elevated to an unprecedented height, does workers' inner experience become increasingly passive? We argue that this explanatory gap stems from implicit theoretical assumptions in mainstream psychology, which treats psychological needs as ahistorical, universa

[Reflections on the relationship between psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience].

Despite their distinct theoretical and methodological frameworks, the two fields - psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience - nevertheless converge on the idea that a large part of psychological functioning eludes consciousness. While psychoanalysis conceives of the unconscious as dynamic, conflict-ridden, and meaningful, neuroscience views it as a set of non-conscious neural processes. Parallels are drawn between cognitive psychology, relational neuroscience, and psychoanalysis.

An integrative, multidisciplinary approach to the study of brain-behavior relations in the context of typical and atypical development.

The study of brain development and that of behavioral development have historically proceeded independently of one another. This is an unfortunate set of circumstances, given that the disciplines concerned with development-for example, developmental psychology, pediatrics, psychiatry, clinical psychology, and the neurosciences-have much to learn from each other. Drawing on recent advances in the developmental brain and behavioral sciences, we illustrate the transdisciplinary approach our group has adopted in the service of uniting the research on brain and behavior in the context of developmen

The relationship between social anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorders: a critical review.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a significant co-morbidity between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Despite the fact that many studies have demonstrated strong relationships between SAD and AUD diagnoses, there has been much inconsistency in demonstrating causality or even directionality of the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol-related variables. For example, some studies have showed a positive relationship between social anxiety and alcohol-related variables, while others have shown a negative relationship or no relationship whatsoever. I

Cognitive bias and irrational belief as predictors of avoidance.

Cognitive bias, i.e. overestimates of subjective probability and cost of catastrophic events, and irrational belief were explored as predictors of avoidance. Three groups-anxiety disordered clients, a mixed group of clinic outpatients, and normals--were administered several self-report inventories. Multiple regression analyses were used to investigate a modified version of the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire, the Belief Scale, and the Body Sensations Questionnaire as predictors of avoidance, as measured by the Mobility Inventory. It was hypothesized that frequency x probability x cost of

The onset of driving phobias.

Thirty driving phobics who called the Psychiatry Outpatient Phobia Clinic (25 females and five males) were given a 20-min semi-standardized telephone interview during which they were asked about the circumstances of the onset of their driving fears. Twelve (40%) reported that their fears were precipitated by a panic attack on the freeway; six (20%) by a collision; and three (10%) by other frightening experiences in automobiles. Four (13.3%) related the onset to family stress or upheaval. Other modes of onset also occurred. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of existing t

Imagery and interpretations in social phobia: support for the combined cognitive biases hypothesis.

Cognitive-behavioral models of clinical problems typically postulate a role for the combined effects of different cognitive biases in the maintenance of a given disorder. It is striking therefore that research has tended to examine cognitive biases in isolation rather than assessing how they work together to maintain psychological dysfunction. The combined cognitive biases hypothesis presented here suggests that cognitive biases influence each another and can interact to maintain a given disorder. Furthermore, it is proposed that the combined effects of cognitive biases may have a greater impa

Relationship of response-set differences on Beck Depression Inventory scores of undergraduate students.

The relationship of a ruminating and a distracting response style upon severity of depression and on gender were investigated. The Ways of Coping Questionnaire was modified to include ruminating and distracting scales and administered to 91 undergraduate students who also completed the Beck Depression Inventory. It was hypothesized that (a) regardless of gender, people who ruminate would have greater rated severity of depression than people who distract themselves; (b) women ruminators would show higher rated severity of depression than women distractors; and (c) female and male ruminators wou

Affective responses to hyperventilation: a test of the cognitive model of panic.

A cognitive explanation of the association between acute hyperventilation and panic attacks has been proposed: the extent to which sensations produced by hyperventilation are interpreted in a negative and catastrophic way is said to be a major determinant of panic. Non-clinical subjects were provided with a negative or a positive interpretation of the sensations produced by equivalent amounts of voluntary hyperventilation. As predicted, there was a significant difference between positive and negative interpretation conditions on ratings of positive and negative affect. Subjects in the positive

Perturbation graphs, invariant causal prediction and causal relations in psychology.

Networks (graphs) in psychology are often restricted to settings without interventions. Here we consider a framework borrowed from biology that involves multiple interventions from different contexts (observations and experiments) in a single analysis. The method is called perturbation graphs. In gene regulatory networks, the induced change in one gene is measured on all other genes in the analysis, thereby assessing possible causal relations. This is repeated for each gene in the analysis. A perturbation graph leads to the correct set of causes (not nec-essarily direct causes). Subsequent pru

Cognitive and affective components of life events: their relations and effects on well-being.

A model of how five key facets of life events are related to one another and influence mental health and functioning was examined. The facets are the experience of control over, anticipation of, pleasantness from, stress generated by, and adjustment to life events. Multivariate analyses of data from 420 adult male respondents yielded results that were largely consistent with the hypothesized model. The results suggested that control over and anticipation of life events influenced the perceived stress produced by the events and the ability to adjust to them. In turn, it appeared that such stres

Reinforcement learning to optimize tuberculosis screening strategies in resource-limited settings.

Still, tuberculosis (TB) is a big health problem all over the world. It is very hard to find cases quickly in places that don't have many resources or fair access to care. Screening methods from the past, such as x-rays, symptom-based assessments, and molecular diagnostics, have limits on how much they cost, how many people they can help, and how well they work. This means we need new ideas on how to use our tools better and find cases more quickly. A strong way to improve how TB is screened is to use reinforcement learning (RL), which can show how to make choices in a certain order when there
