Myocardial Work Indices in Olympic Athletes: Sex-Specific Reference Values and the Impact of Sports Disciplines.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiating exercise-induced cardiac remodeling from early dilated cardiomyopathy remains challenging in athletes, as conventional echocardiographic parameters may overlap in cardiomyopathies and physiologic remodeling. Myocardial work indices (MWIs) have been proposed as a promising tool to improve characterization of physiologic remodeling and eventually help in this distinction. However, reference values in athletic populations are currently lacking. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to define sex-specific and sport-independent reference values for MWIs in a large coh

Sex differences in work-related accidents extracted from free text in Spanish using natural language processing.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from the global north shows that women and men significantly differ in work accidents and occupational disease rates. However, more data is needed for countries elsewhere. METHODS: Using natural language processing (NLP), we extracted accident mechanisms from 350,000 admission reports from the largest occupational health provider in Chile. In addition, using the same technique, we normalize occupations written in free text, following the nomenclature from the International Labour Organization (ILO). RESULTS: We found that in 57.3% of accidents, a man is affected, while i

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Women Who Are Sex Trafficked, and Social Service Utilization: Implications for Social Work.

The aim of this study was to examine the associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the high levels of social service usage by women who are sex trafficked. Fifty (N = 50) women who were sex trafficked were surveyed using purposive and snowball sampling methods. The ACEs score for respondents ranged from 2 to 10 with an average score of 7.4 (SD = 2.3). Emotional and sexual abuse tied at 88 percent as the most frequently cited ACEs among the women in this sample. The prevalence of ACEs was significantly higher in this sample compared with known estimates in similar population

"I would do anything but that": Attitudes towards sex work among rural people who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: Stigma towards people who use drugs and those who engage in sex work is well-documented, leading to consequences such as reduced access to health services and support, especially in rural milieus. Stigma reduction has been recognized as a priority in the opioid overdose crisis, but little attention has been paid to within-group attitudes and beliefs. This study aimed to explore how people who use drugs in rural counties across the United States appraise sex work by themselves or other community members. METHODS: Qualitative interview data came from the Rural Opioid Initiative (ROI

Economy, migrant labour and sex work: interplay of HIV epidemic drivers in Zimbabwe over three decades.

BACKGROUND: HIV took off rapidly in Zimbabwe during the 1980s. Yet, between 1998 and 2003, as the economy faltered, HIV prevalence declined abruptly and without clear explanation. METHODS: We reviewed epidemiological, behavioural, and economic data over three decades to understand changes in economic conditions, migrant labour and sex work that may account for observed fluctuations in Zimbabwe's HIV epidemic. Potential biases related to changing epidemic paradigms and data sources were examined. RESULTS: Early studies describe rural poverty, male migrant labour and sex work as conditions fac

Different stage, different performance: the protective strategy of role play on emotional health in sex work.

This paper uses Arlie Hochschild's (1983) concept of emotion management and "surface" and "deep acting" to explore how sex workers separate and distance themselves from their public role. Experiences of stigmatisation prevail among sex workers and how stigma is resisted or managed has an impact on their health. In-depth interviews were carried out between August 2006 and April 2007 with 58 sex workers in five cities in New Zealand following decriminalisation of the sex industry. Most participants drew on ideas of professionalism in sustaining a psychological distance between their private and

Effects of female sex hormones and contraceptive pill on the diagnostic work-up for primary aldosteronism.

OBJECTIVES: Due to the widespread use of the aldosterone to renin ratio (ARR), primary aldosteronism is currently recognized as a frequent cause of secondary hypertension. After a positive screening, primary aldosteronism diagnosis needs confirmation by an inhibitory test such as intravenous saline load (ivSLT). The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of female hormones in primary aldosteronism diagnosis, by evaluating possible differences by sex on ARR screening, on the rate of ivSLT response and analyzing the influence of free and oral contraceptive-induced menstrual cycle o

'I won't be able to go home being pregnant': sex work and pregnancy in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Sex workers report high rates of unintended pregnancy that are inconsistent with widespread reports of condom use. Greater understanding of the implications of an unintended pregnancy and barriers to contraceptive use is needed to better meet the broader sexual and reproductive health needs of this population. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 women sex workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Findings reveal that most women are trying to conform to societal norms and protect their reputations. They fear pregnancy would reveal that they are having unsanctioned sex and that they are sex workers. Th

HIV- and sex work-related stigmas and quality of life of female sex workers living with HIV in South Africa: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Environmental quality of life (QoL) assesses individually perceived factors such as physical safety and security, accessibility, quality of healthcare, and physical environment. These factors are particularly relevant in the context of sex work and HIV, where stigma has been identified as an important barrier across several prevention and treatment domains. This study aims to examine the association between different types of HIV- and sex work-related stigmas and environmental QoL among female sex workers (FSW) living with HIV in Durban, South Africa. METHODS: We conducted cross-s

The Intersection of Human Rights, HIV and Sex Work: Implications for Ending AIDS in Thailand by 2030.

INTRODUCTION: Sex work significantly shapes the Thai economy and the HIV epidemic, yet its criminalization restricts access to health services and exacerbates human rights violations. This study examines experiences of stigma, discrimination, gender-based violence (GBV) and incarceration among sex workers (SWs), exploring how these factors intersect with HIV services. This research is a component of a larger study investigating factors associated with pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among SWs in Thailand. METHODS: We conducted a post hoc analysis of a cross-sectional survey (September-

Sex differences in patients with working diagnosis of myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA).

Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) constitutes 3-15% of all acute myocardial infarctions. Women are more frequently diagnosed with MINOCA, although the influence of sex on long-term outcomes is still unclear. In this study we aimed to compare sex-based differences in baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes in patients with suspected MINOCA. We have retrospectively analyzed 6063 patients diagnosed with MINOCA (3220 females and 2843 male patients) from combined 3 large polish registries (PL-ACS, SILCARD and AMI-PL). Male patients were significantly younge

Sex-related differences in visuomotor skill recovery following concussion in working-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: The ability to perform visually-guided motor tasks requires the transformation of visual information into programmed motor outputs. When the guiding visual information does not align spatially with the motor output, the brain processes rules to integrate somatosensory information into an appropriate motor response. Performance on such rule-based, "cognitive-motor integration" tasks is affected in concussion. Here, we investigate the relationship between visuomotor skill performance, concussion history, and sex during the course of a post-concussion management program. METHODS: Fif

Sex, gender and the carceral: Female staff experiences of working in forensic care with sexual offenders.

English high-secure hospitals have contained individuals deemed mentally disordered, and dangerous, since the mid-nineteenth century. With the development of gender sensitive services female patients have been moved out of these institutions into smaller secure settings. Female staff continue to work in high secure hospitals, but are often in a minority in these services. Little is known about how female staff experience the everyday world of work. This paper is based on in-depth interviews with female nurses employed in a unit caring for detained male sexual offenders with a diagnosis of pers

Modelling the impact of underage and coerced entry into sex work on HIV transmission in Tijuana, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Some female sex workers (FSW) are initiated into sex work underage (<18 years) and/or through coercion, potentially increasing vulnerability. We estimated the contribution of these factors to HIV transmission in Tijuana, Mexico. METHODS: Using data from three bio-behavioural studies among adult FSWs in Tijuana (2003-2015), regression analysis assessed associations between underage or coerced entry into sex work and increased sexual or injecting risk behaviours. A dynamic HIV transmission model projected the proportion of new HIV infections prevented among FSWs over 2025-2034 from

Typologies of Sex Work Practice and Associations with the HIV Risk Environment and Risk Behaviors in Kazakhstan.

Women engaged in sex work (WESW) who use drugs are a key population in Kazakhstan's HIV epidemic. Global research suggests susceptibility to HIV varies by sex work environment. This study aims to identify evidence-based typologies of WESW and examine their associations with HIV risk. We surveyed 400 WESW who use drugs in two Kazakhstani cities, including questions on sociodemographic characteristics, social, physical, and economic risk environments, and sexual risk behaviors. Latent class analysis identified four distinct typologies of sex work practice: occasional sex work (n = 61, 15%), prof

Intimate partner sexual violence is associated with unhealthy alcohol use among Kenyan women engaged in sex work.

AIM: Unhealthy alcohol use is often correlated with experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). We investigated how different types of IPV (sexual, physical, emotional, and financial) were associated with unhealthy alcohol use among women engaged in sex work in Mombasa, Kenya. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 283 HIV-negative women who engaged in sex work recruited from an ongoing cohort study. Modified Poisson analysis was used to assess associations between recent (≤ 12 months) or past (> 12 months) experiences of sexual, physical, emotional, or financial IPV and unhealthy a
