The drive for muscularity and disordered eating among heterosexual and sexual minority men in Israel.

In this study, we investigated the moderating effects of self-acceptance and perceived country-level acceptance of gender and sexual orientation on the relationship between the drive for muscularity and disordered eating, particularly among sexual minority and cisgender men. We hypothesized that high levels of acceptance, both individually and within the societal context, would mitigate the pressure to adhere to conventional masculine ideals, consequently lowering the likelihood of engaging in disordered eating behaviors. Seven hundred twenty-three Israeli men aged 18-68 participated in the st

Substance Use and Minority Stress in a Population of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Nurses.

The aim of this study was to explore the incidence of problematic substance use (PSU) and the relationship between level of substance use, minority stress, and general stressors in a population of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) identified nurses. Methods: A national, convenience sample of 394 self-identified LGB nurses completed an online survey in March 2019. Using data from the ASSIST V3.1 measurement tool, the incidence of problematic and non-problematic tobacco, alcohol and illicit substance use was described as a percentage of respondents in each group. Hierarchical regression assessed t

Differences in Substance Use and Sexual Risk by Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Among University and Community Young Adults in a U.S.-Mexico Border City.

Ethnic and sexual minority young adults in El Paso, Texas, are at high risk for substance use, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). In 2014, a Hispanic-serving higher education institution partnered with two community-based organizations to implement integrated substance use interventions and HIV and HCV prevention among young adults on campus and in surrounding communities. Among the 95 young adults, aged 18-24 years, who responded to a needs assessment survey, 91.5% were Hispanic, 53.7% were female, and 27.4% were sexual or gender minorities (SGMs) as defined by b

The Relationship Between Internalized Sexual Prejudice and Sexualized Substance Use: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

LGBQ individuals report higher rates of sexualized drug use (SDU; i.e. the use of alcohol and/or other drugs before or during sex) than heterosexual individuals. Drawing on Minority Stress Theory, this paper explored internalized sexual prejudice (ISP; i.e. the process of internalizing negative societal attitudes toward minority sexual identities) as a theoretically relevant factor underlying this disparity. Relevant studies were identified through a systematic search of the PsycINFO, Cinahl, Medline Complete, Scopus, and Web of Science databases on the 29th of April, 2024, plus a subsequent s

Sex differences in the brain, behavior, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Sex differences in the brain are reflected in behavior and in the risk for neuropsychiatric disorders. The fetal brain develops in the male direction due to a direct effect of testosterone on the developing neurons, or in the female direction due to the absence of such a testosterone surge. Because sexual differentiation of the genitals takes place earlier in intrauterine life than sexual differentiation of the brain, these two processes can be influenced independently of each other. Gender identity (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender), sexual orientation (heterosexuality

A qualitative study of gendered psychosocial processes in eating disorder development.

OBJECTIVE: Gender and sexual identity constitute social categories that have been found to be important when identifying persons at risk for eating disorders (ED), since prevalence rates are especially high for women as well as persons of gender and sexual minorities. The objective of this study is to enhance the understanding of how these social categories relate to ED development. METHOD: A qualitative, inductive approach was used in order to develop empirically grounded hypotheses about gendered aspects in ED development. Data are 14 narrative interviews with persons of diverse sexual and

Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire and Clinical Impairment Assessment norms for intersectional identities using an MTurk sample.

OBJECTIVE: There are limited data to guide the interpretation of scores on measures of eating-disorder psychopathology among underrepresented individuals. We aimed to provide norms for the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and Clinical Impairment Assessment (CIA) across racial/ethnic, gender, and sexual identities, and sexual orientations and their intersections by recruiting a diverse sample of Amazon MTurk workers (MTurkers; N = 1782). Psychosexual disorders and dermatologists.

Sexual problems that are psychological in origin, rather than physiological, are called psychosexual disorders. Multiple factors, such as general health of the patient, chronic illnesses, psychiatric/psychological disorders, and socio-cultural factors, alone or in combination can be attributed to the development of psychosexual dysfunctions. The symptoms of these disorders vary for each individual and differ with gender. These disorders may be categorized as sexual dysfunction, paraphilias, and gender identity disorders. Dermatologists are sometimes consulted for sexual dysfunctions in their r

Cut from the Same Cloth? Comparing the Sexuality of Male Cross-Dressers and Transfeminine Individuals Through the Conceptual Framework of Autogynephilia.

Autogynephilia is a natal male's propensity to be sexually aroused by the thought or fantasy of being a woman. Both male cross-dressers and transfeminine individuals (a broad range of individuals born male with a feminine gender identity; e.g., trans women) have been shown to be motivated or characterized by autogynephilia. Although there is a lack of research on whether other potentially related aspects of sexuality are comparable between them, the conceptual framework of autogynephilia offers several predictions that can be tested empirically. Following these predictions, the present study e

Gender-specific associations between sexual compulsivity, sexual functioning and sexual satisfaction: a mediation analysis in an Iranian community sample.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive sexual behaviour disorder is recognised as a mental health disorder, characterised by the inability to control impulses and repetitive sexual behaviours, and is often associated with reduced sexual functioning and satisfaction. However, few studies have examined the associations between sexual compulsivity, sexual functioning and sexual satisfaction in non-Western populations, particularly with a gender perspective. METHODS: This study aimed to examine gender-specific patterns of these relationships in a community-based Iranian sample. Data were collected from 705 parti

Incorrect and Sex-Inconsistent Mapping of Disorders: Identification of Sex Biases in the ICD-10, ICD-11 and SNOMED CT and How to Work Around Them.

In the international classifications ICD-10-WHO and ICD-11-WHO, many sex-specific diseases have incomplete coding. It is possible to further enhance semantic interoperability using SNOMED CT additionally to ICD. Part of the analysis of semantic interoperability of diagnoses in the ICD are Sexual Dysfunctions, Postpartum Depression, Sexual Assault, Premenstrual Tension Syndrome and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting, Gender Incongruence and Disorders of Breast. Labeling biases have been identified in all diagnoses, either in SNOMED CT or ICD. For mental disor

Homeostatic disruption and sexual disorders.

A novel model of human sexual disorders is offered. It claims that the inherited schemata representation (ISR) program for gender definition and sexual orientation is impaired during early homeostatic disruption. This causes the transformation of postnatal asexuality to 'infantile sexuality' operating on an impulse-like pattern. Late homeostatic disruption leads to impairment in the acquired engram linkage (AEL) programs which are composed of consistent elements on gender definition in terms of sexual orientation under cultural, religious and parental influence. These affected programs replace

Physical and Mental Health Disparities at the Intersection of Sexual and Gender Minority Statuses: Evidence From Population-Level Data.

Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) experience detriments across many physical and mental health outcomes compared with heterosexual and cisgender people. But little is known about health outcomes for those who are both gender minorities and sexual minorities. Motivated by theories of double disadvantage and leveraging advancements in data collection and measurement, we examine physical and mental health disparities across sexual and gender minority statuses: cisgender heterosexuals, gender minority heterosexuals, cisgender sexual minorities, and people who are both gender and sexual minorities

[THE MEDICAL CARE OF TRANSGENDER PEOPLE].

The phenomenon of the discrepancy between a person's sexual self-perception and his/her genetic sex has been known to medicine since the mid-19th century. Initially, this discrepancy was considered to be a mental disorder. Over time, advances in medical abilities in surgery, hormonal treatment and infertility, have enabled physicians to help those who are affected to fulfill their wish. The present notion is that transsexualism is a solvable problem (whether the desired wish is for a man to become a woman or vice versa). Treatment is both complicated (surgery) as well as chronic (hormones). In

Prevalence of 12-month mental and substance use disorders in sexual minority college students in Mexico.

PURPOSE: Mental health disparities have been documented among sexual minority college students, but there is a dearth of evidence from developing countries. The aim is to estimate the prevalence of 12-month mental and substance use disorders across a range of sexual identities among first-year college students in Mexican universities, and test whether there is an association between sexual identity and disorders and whether the association is moderated by gender. METHOD: The University Project for Healthy Students, a web-based survey conducted as part of the World Health Organization's World

Sexual Responsivity and the Effects of Negative Mood on Sexual Arousal in Hypersexual Men Who Have Sex With Men (MSM).

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have found that hypersexuality is associated with a high propensity for sexual excitation. In comparison, less is known about the relationship between hypersexuality and sexual arousal at the state level. Also, previous research has revealed a relationship between hypersexuality and negative mood. However, the possibility that sexual response might not be as negatively impacted by negative mood in hypersexual individuals has, as yet, not been tested. AIM: The purpose of this study was to investigate sexual responsivity and the effects of negative mood on sexual

Psychiatric Diagnoses Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Patients Compared to Cisgender Patients.

Background: Sexual and gender minority persons (ie, those reporting sexual orientation other than heterosexual and gender identity other than cisgender, respectively) experience high rates of various forms of psychopathology. However, discussions of sexual minority populations are often focused on aspects of mental health associated with sexual orientation, with relatively less emphasis placed on transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals' mental health. No prior studies have compared psychiatric diagnoses between TGD and cisgender patients presenting for psychiatric treatment in a syste

Contexts of social alcohol and cannabis use among sexual minority cisgender women and gender diverse individuals: Event-level differences in alcohol and cannabis use patterns based on the sexual orientations and gender identities of substance use companions.

PURPOSE: Sexual minority women and gender diverse individuals assigned female at birth (SMWGD) are at elevated risk for alcohol and cannabis use disorders. It has been posited that characteristics of SMWGD's substance use companions (i.e., sexual orientation, gender identity) may influence their own use, but few studies have tested this. The current study aimed to examine whether quantity and consequences of substance use varied based on sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI) of SMWGD's substance use companions. METHODS: We utilized a 30-day ecological momentary assessment study of

Health disparities in one of the world's most progressive countries: a scoping review of mental health and substance use among sexual and gender minority people in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from many parts of the world shows that sexual and gender minority (SGM) people have poorer health than their cisgender heterosexual counterparts. Minority stressors, particularly stigma and discrimination, have been identified as major contributors to sexual orientation- and gender identity-related health disparities, particularly negative mental health and behavioral health outcomes. To better understand factors that contribute to these disparities, we conducted a scoping review of SGM mental health and substance use research in the Netherlands-a country with a long-stan
