Shame, rumination, and self-compassion in men assessed for hypersexual disorder.

A number of studies have linked maladaptive shame to higher levels of hypersexual behavior and tendencies to ruminate. However, little research has examined factors that may attenuate the negative impact that shame and rumination may have on hypersexuality. Drawing on data collected from male patients (N=172) assessed for hypersexual disorder in a DSM-5 field trial, path analysis was used to explore relationships among shame, rumination, self-compassion, and hypersexual behavior. The findings from this study showed that self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between shame and rumi

[Shame, guilt and social anxiety in obesity with binge-eating disorder].

Binge-eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder found in obese people. The present study compared 89 obese participants with and without BED in terms of eating-, weight- and body related shame and guilt and their association to self-esteem and social anxiety. The results illustrated that obese people with BED reported higher scores in disorder specific shame and guilt, except feeling shame about their weight and their body; they suffered from lower self-esteem than obese without BED. The results confirmed that self-esteem is a significant statistical predictor of feeling shame.

Childhood maltreatment and internalized shame in adults with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

UNLABELLED: Relatively little is understood regarding the aetiology of bipolar disorder (BD) other than for the influence of a large genetic component on the development of the disorder and the impact of stressful life events on changes in current mood. However, amongst a range of psychiatric diagnoses, research consistently demonstrates a higher frequency of reports of childhood abuse and neglect compared with individuals in the general population. In addition, those who report experiences of childhood maltreatment also report high levels of internalized shame in adulthood, although there is

Beyond Exhaustion: Shame, Identity Disruption, and Functional Collapse in Autistic Burnout.

Autistic burnout is typically defined as chronic exhaustion with functional impacts on everyday life. It appears common across work, study, and relationships, yet its emotional and relational dimensions remain underexamined. To document lived experiences of autistic burnout among autistic adults and to identify emotional and relational processes (e.g. shame and masking) that may shape onset, maintenance, and recovery. Eleven autistic adults participated in semi-structured interviews or written responses conducted online between July 2023 and November 2024. Data were analysed using template ana

Do patients with different mental disorders show specific aspects of shame?

Shame is related to several mental disorders. We assume that facets of shame, namely bodily, cognitive and existential shame, may occur in typical patterns in mental and personality disorders. An excessive level of shame may lead to psychopathological symptoms. However, a lack of shame may also lead to distress, for instance as it may facilitate violation of social norms and thus may promote interpersonal problems. In this study we investigated facets of shame in females suffering from various mental disorders and personality disorders presumably associated with specific aspects of shame. Wome

The association between shame and friendship in individuals with exstrophy-epispadias complex.

INTRODUCTION: As the exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) has not only physical, but also complex psychological consequences, further research is required to understand these in greater detail. This study aimed to test hypotheses concerning the association between shame, disclosure, friendship quality and life satisfaction among individuals with EEC, in order to identify specific areas for potential patient support. SAMPLE AND METHODS: During the pre-registered study, data were collected online and anonymously via an Instagram account and four support groups in Germany and Switzerland. This cro

Self-compassion as an antidote to self-stigma and shame in autistic adults.

Autistic individuals are frequently exposed to stigmatizing attitudes and discrimination. Through the lived experience of stigmatizing attitudes, autistic people can internalize the negative stereotypes associated with autism. This phenomenon is known as self-stigma. In non-autistic populations, self-stigma is associated with shame and negative mental health outcomes. In this study, we aim to better understand the mental health outcomes associated with self-stigma in autism and to investigate whether and how self-compassion compared to camouflaging may protect from self-stigma in autistic indi

The Unseen Burden: Uncovering Shame and Its Determinants in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Shame is frequent in Parkinson's disease (PD) and often overlooked. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to assess factors associated with PD-related shame. METHODS: PD-related shame was measured using the Shame and Embarrassment in PD (SPARK) scale in patients without cognitive impairment. Correlation between personal determinants (demographics, psychological traits [shame/guilt propensity, trait anxiety]), PD-related determinants (PD characteristics; motor, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric symptoms; medication; and health-related quality of life [QoL]), and SPARK was analyzed using multiple c

The shame-blame complex of parents with cognitively disabled children in Italy.

This article aims to advance knowledge related to the concept of the 'shame-blame complex' by analysing the accounts and experiences of parents with cognitively disabled children. It draws on 29 interviews with parents of children with Down syndrome and shadowing sessions with one family, carried out in Italy. Results show how the feeling of shame as a consequence of being associated with a disabled child is turned into blame for bad parenting. The sources of this blaming process are twofold: firstly, neoliberalism has disseminated an intensive parenting model based on the imperative of indivi

Examining the causal effects of social exclusion on shame and dissociative detachment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dissociative detachment experiences (e.g., derealization, absorption) underpin much psychopathology and are often researched in relation to co-occurring affective states such as shame, the latter being known to occur in situations involving actual or perceived negative social evaluation. The association between shame and dissociative detachment may also be moderated by individual differences in people's need to belong. The goal of the present study was to experimentally investigate the effects of social exclusion on shame and dissociative detachment depending on perc

The effects of sexual shame, emotion regulation and gender on sexual desire.

Sexual desire is of importance to sexual health, functioning, and well-being. Although an increasing number of studies address disorders related to sexual functioning, there is still a limited understanding of the underlying individual factors affecting sexual desire. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of sexual shame, emotion regulation strategies, and gender on sexual desire. In order to investigate this, sexual desire, expressive suppression, cognitive reappraisal, and sexual shame was measured in 218 Norwegian participants using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-

The effects of self-critical rumination on shame and stress: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Self-critical rumination is the process of repetitively thinking about one's past instances of failure without actively problem-solving. Shame has a central role within self-critical rumination and is accompanied by physiological changes that resemble stress responses. AIMS: To experimentally investigate the effects of self-critical rumination on shame and stress following perceived failure. METHOD: Sixty volunteers engaged in an impossible task that resulted in guaranteed failure. Four groups, combining presence or absence of induced self-critical rumination with high or low per

Perfectionism, Shame, and Aggression in Depressive Patients With Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Depressive symptoms are known to co-occur in patients with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). From a psychodynamic perspective, perfectionism, shame, and aggression are regarded as prominent in depressed patients. The authors investigated the occurrence of perfectionism, shame, and aggression in patients with NPD, and whether shame is a mediating or a moderating factor for aggression. Two groups of patients with depression, 61 diagnosed with NPD and no other personality disorders (PD) were compared with 56 without any PD, using the SCID screening questionnaire and a semistructured interv

The activation of shame following dissociation in the context of relationships: A vignette study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Studies show experiences of negative affective states, such as shame, elevate dissociation. Using vignettes, this study aimed to investigate the reverse, whether experiences of dissociation in the context of varied interpersonal relationships elevate shame. METHODS: 269 adults completed online questionnaires (Dissociative Experiences Scale; Experiences of Shame Scale) and were randomly allocated to vignettes describing either dissociation or sadness in three different relationship contexts: (1) with an acquaintance, (2) with a close friend, or (3) when alone. Interpersonal risk for suicide in social anxiety: The roles of shame and depression.

Though research indicates that individuals with social anxiety disorder may experience elevated levels of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, two interpersonal risk factors critical for the development of suicidal desire, it remains unclear why. The current investigation considered how shame and depression may help to explain the relationship between social anxiety and interpersonal suicide risk factors. Participants (N=259), recruited using Amazon.com's Mechanical Turk, completed measures of social anxiety, interpersonal suicide risk factors, shame, and depression. Social anx

Blame, shame and hopelessness: medically unexplained symptoms and the 'heartsink' experience.

BACKGROUND: 'Heartsink' patients present a moral dilemma. We recognise their suffering, but at the same time struggle with the feelings they trigger in us. Patients also experience negative feelings. Without a diagnosis they lack a narrative or vocabulary to make sense of their own suffering. OBJECTIVE: This article explores some of the challenges faced and strategies utilised when managing patients with medically unexplained symptoms. DISCUSSION: Doctors and patients often experience frustration and helplessness in consultations around medically unexplained symptoms. Without a diagnosis, pa

Understanding the roles of shame and neuroticism in a patient sample of hypersexual men.

Although shame and facets of neuroticism have independently been linked to hypersexuality, the present study extends these findings by exploring pathways among these variables, using structural equation modeling in a patient sample of hypersexual adult men (N = 95). Results suggested that the domain of neuroticism, as represented by the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised, was a significant direct predictor of hypersexuality, with specific variance from the facet of impulsivity adding additional predictive power. Shame's bivariate association with hypersexuality was also significant, but in a pr

Shame, guilt, symptoms of depression, and reported history of psychological maltreatment.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to provide preliminary data extending earlier research on shame and guilt, examining their relationships both to symptoms of depression and to psychological maltreatment. Symptoms of depression were expected to correlate positively with shame, but not with guilt. Psychological maltreatment was also expected to correlate positively with shame. The relationship between psychological maltreatment and guilt was examined on an exploratory basis. METHOD: Two hundred and eighty participants from a public community college and a private university compl

Shame and implicit self-concept in women with borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Shame is considered to be a central emotion in borderline personality disorder and to be related to self-injurious behavior, chronic suicidality, and anger-hostility. However, its level and impact on people with borderline personality disorder are largely unknown. The authors examined levels of self-reported shame, guilt, anxiety, and implicit shame-related self-concept in women with borderline personality disorder and assessed the association of shame with self-esteem, quality of life, and anger-hostility. METHOD: Sixty women with borderline personality disorder completed self-rep
