Space use patterns of sharks in relation to boat activity in an urbanized coastal waterway.

Aquatic ecosystems face numerous anthropogenic threats associated with coastal urbanization, with boat activity being among the most prevalent. The present study aimed to evaluate a potential relationship between boat activity and shark space use in Biscayne Bay, Florida (USA), a coastal waterway exposed to high levels of boating. Spatiotemporal patterns in boat density and traffic were determined from aerial surveys and underwater acoustic recorders, respectively. These data were then compared with residency patterns of bull (Carcharhinus leucas), nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and great hamm

Dual function of the pectoral girdle for feeding and locomotion in white-spotted bamboo sharks.

Positioned at the intersection of the head, body and forelimb, the pectoral girdle has the potential to function in both feeding and locomotor behaviours-although the latter has been studied far more. In ray-finned fishes, the pectoral girdle attaches directly to the skull and is retracted during suction feeding, enabling the ventral body muscles to power rapid mouth expansion. However, in sharks, the pectoral girdle is displaced caudally and entirely separate from the skull (as in tetrapods), raising the question of whether it is mobile during suction feeding and contributing to suction expan

Calcified cartilage or bone? Collagens in the tessellated endoskeletons of cartilaginous fish (sharks and rays).

The primary skeletal tissue in elasmobranchs -sharks, rays and relatives- is cartilage, forming both embryonic and adult endoskeletons. Only the skeletal surface calcifies, exhibiting mineralized tiles (tesserae) sandwiched between a cartilage core and overlying fibrous perichondrium. These two tissues are based on different collagens (Coll II and I, respectively), fueling a long-standing debate as to whether tesserae are more like calcified cartilage or bone (Coll 1-based) in their matrix composition. We demonstrate that stingray (Urobatis halleri) tesserae are bipartite, having an upper Coll

Blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) show high capacity for wound healing and recovery following injury.

Wound healing is important for sharks from the earliest life stages, for example, as the 'umbilical scar' in viviparous species heals, and throughout adulthood, when sharks can incur a range of external injuries from natural and anthropogenic sources. Despite anecdotal accounts of rapid healing in elasmobranchs, data regarding recovery and survival of individuals from different wound or injury types has not been systematically collected. The present study documented: (i) 'umbilical scar' healing in wild-caught, neonatal blacktip reef sharks while being reared for 30 days in flow-through labora

Comparative studies of high performance swimming in sharks I. Red muscle morphometrics, vascularization and ultrastructure.

Tunas (family Scombridae) and sharks in the family Lamnidae are highly convergent for features commonly related to efficient and high-performance (i.e. sustained, aerobic) swimming. High-performance swimming by fishes requires adaptations augmenting the delivery, transfer and utilization of O(2) by the red myotomal muscle (RM), which powers continuous swimming. Tuna swimming performance is enhanced by a unique anterior and centrally positioned RM (i.e. closer to the vertebral column) and by structural features (relatively small fiber diameter, high capillary density and greater myoglobin conce

An experimental model for the study of endolymphatic hydrops in sharks: implications for the clinician.

In recent years, attention has focused on the role of the endolymphatic sac (ELS) and the endolymphatic duct (ELD) in the pathogenesis of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). Changes have been noted surgically and radiographically by others in the ELS and ELD in patients with ELH. This report summarizes the development of a shark model with which to study the pathophysiology of ELH. The background material and overall results of anatomic, histopathologic, and ultrastructural studies using the model are presented. Possible implications for the clinical handling of ELH as a result of this work is emphas

Evidences of sibling bites in porbeagle shark (Lamna nasus) embryos.

The porbeagle, top predator with amphi-temperate, coastal and oceanic distribution, ranges 26-57°S in the Southwest Atlantic. An injured, pregnant female was found stranded on the coast of Quequén, with two male embryos in each uterus. The embryos in the right uterus differed in size, and the smaller one had injuries. Our hypothesis is that embryos have the ability to perform lateral movements that allow them to bite obliquely along the anteroposterior axis of the uterine sac, so that the lacerations of the smaller embryo would be the result of lateral bites from its sibling, as the latter wou

Provisioning ecotourism does not increase tiger shark site fidelity.

A perennial criticism of provisioning ecotourism is that it alters the natural behavior and ecology of the target species by providing an artificial food source. Here we evaluate its impact on the long-term site fidelity patterns of tiger sharks in French Polynesia. We hypothesized that a significant impact of provisioning would lead to (1) increases in individual site fidelity over time, and (2) an increase in the number of resident individuals over time. Of 53 individuals photo-identified and monitored during > 500 dives over five years, 10 individuals accounted for > 75% of all sightings, w

A Blacktip Reef Shark Bite to the Hand in the Remote Solomon Islands.

BACKGROUND: Solomon Islands is a country in the South Pacific Ocean with excellent scuba diving, particularly among its remote islands that can be accessed by liveaboard dive boats. Blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) are found throughout the island nation and rarely attack humans. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 42-year-old man who sustained a hand laceration after being bitten by a blacktip reef shark. He underwent complex primary wound closure in an austere environment and received prophylactic antibiotics. No infection developed and he recovered fully. WHY SHOULD AN EME

Body temperature stability in the whale shark, the world's largest fish.

It is generally assumed that the body temperature of large animals is less likely to change because of their large body size, resulting in a high thermal inertia and a smaller surface area to volume ratio. The goal of this study was to investigate the stability of body temperature in large fish using data from field experiments. We measured the muscle temperatures of free-ranging whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), the largest extant fish globally, and investigated their ectothermic physiology and the stability of their body temperature. The muscle temperature changed substantially more slowly tha

Redefining species concepts for the Pennsylvanian scissor tooth shark, Edestus.

This study reevaluates the tooth morphology used to define species within the genus Edestus (Chondrichthyes, Euchondrocephali). Known as the scissor tooth shark, Edestus produced a unique dentition of spiraled tooth families positioned in the symphysis (midline) of the upper and lower jaws. Morphometric analysis of more than 200 ejected teeth and intact spiral tooth whorls demonstrates that teeth from the upper and lower whorls differ in shape and ontogeny. Comparison of these data to the type specimens of 13 existing species reduces the number of morphologically distinct Edestus to just four

Steady swimming muscle dynamics in the leopard shark Triakis semifasciata.

Patterns of red muscle strain and activation were examined at three positions along the body (0.42, 0.61 and 0.72 L, where L is total body length) and correlated with simultaneous measurements of midline kinematics during steady swimming (approx. 1.0 L s(-1)) in the leopard shark Triakis semifasciata. Analysis of lateral displacement along the body indicates that the leopard shark is a subcarangiform swimmer. Longitudinal variation in red muscle strain was observed with strain amplitudes ranging from +/-3.9% in the anterior, +/-6.6% in the mid, to +/-4.8% in the posterior body position. Strain

Suspected intestinal torsion in a blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus).

A blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) with a history of recurrent eversion or prolapse of the valvular intestine, arrived at the Steinhart Aquarium in June 1996 and was placed in a mixed species shark display. The eversion soon reappeared, and the animal became thin and anorexic. The everted portion of the intestine was bitten by another shark and became infected. Treatment included force-feeding, manual reduction of the eversion, hydrocortisone suppositories held in place with purse-string sutures, and injections of enrofloxacin. All treatments ultimately failed, and the animal di

Global Patterns of Mercury Speciation and Biomagnification in Sharks: Ecological Drivers and Food Safety Implications.

Mercury (Hg) is a global contaminant that biomagnifies in food webs, raising concerns for food safety, fisheries exploitation, and wildlife conservation. Fish, including apex predators like sharks, are the primary source of human Hg exposure, yet species-specific speciation data remain scarce. Most studies rely on total Hg (THg) as a proxy for methylmercury (MeHg), but direct MeHg measurement is essential for accurate risk assessment due to neurotoxicity and bioavailability. This study presents a comprehensive assessment, quantifying THg-MeHg in 18 species from the Mediterranean, Indian, and A

Maternal investment evolves with larger body size and higher diversification rate in sharks and rays.

Across vertebrates, live bearing evolved at least 150 times from ancestral egg laying into diverse forms and degrees of prepartum maternal investment.1,2 A key question is how reproductive diversity arose and whether reproductive diversification underlies species diversification.3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 To test this, we evaluate the most basal jawed vertebrates: the sharks, rays, and chimaeras, which have one of the greatest ranges of reproductive and ecological diversity among vertebrates.2,12 We reconstruct the sequence of reproductive mode evolution across a phylogeny of 610 chondrichthyans.13 W

CD4 and LAG-3 from sharks to humans: related molecules with motifs for opposing functions.

CD4 and LAG-3 are related molecules that are receptors for MHC class II molecules. Their major functional differences are situated in their cytoplasmic tails, in which CD4 has an activation motif and LAG-3 an inhibitory motif. Here, we identify shark LAG-3 and show that a previously identified shark CD4-like gene has a genomic location, expression pattern, and motifs similar to CD4 in other vertebrates. In nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and cloudy catshark (Scyliorhinus torazame), the highest CD4 expression was consistently found in the thymus whereas such was not the case for LAG-3. Thr

Review: Analysis of the evolutionary convergence for high performance swimming in lamnid sharks and tunas.

Elasmobranchs and bony fishes have evolved independently for more than 400 million years. However, two Recent groups, the lamnid sharks (Family Lamnidae) and tunas (Family Scombridae), display remarkable similarities in features related to swimming performance. Traits separating these two groups from other fishes include a higher degree of body streamlining, a shift in the position of the aerobic, red, locomotor muscle that powers sustained swimming to a more anterior location in the body and nearer to the vertebral column, the capacity to conserve metabolic heat (i.e. regional endothermy), an

Occurrence and levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in deep-sea sharks from Suruga Bay, Japan.

Few studies have investigated the prevalence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in deep-sea sharks. In this study, the levels and profiles of PBDEs were determined in liver samples of eight different species of deep-sea sharks collected in Suruga Bay, Japan. Widespread contamination of PBDEs in the deep-sea environment was reconfirmed in this study as these persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were detected in all specimens analyzed. Mean ΣPBDE levels in the deep-sea sharks ranged from 7 to 517 ng/g of lipid weight. The distribution patterns of BDE homologues were similar in all species
