This study aimed to investigate the effects of shift work on sleep quality, cardiovascular function, and physical activity (PA) levels in Taiwanese police officers. Twenty-one male police officers aged 26.9 ± 4.1 years old located in Taipei voluntarily participated in this study. The participants completed the resting heart rate (HR) and hemodynamic variables (e.g. blood pressure, BP) before and after day-time (DTW) and night-time (NTW) shift work phases (5 working days and 2 resting days for each phase). Additionally, an actigraphy was administered to measure PA and sleep patterns in the last

CONTEXT: This study aimed to investigate the association between night shift work and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
METHODS: We conducted a prospective analysis of 281,280 UK Biobank participants. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the association of night shift work with incident NAFLD. Polygenic risk score analyses were performed to assess whether a genetic predisposition to NAFLD modified the association.
RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.1 years (3,373,964 person-years), 2,555 incident NAFLD cases were identified. Compared with workers wh

Shift work is considered a risk factor for some health problems. This study aimed to determine whether night shift work is a significant factor for breast cancer risk. The case-control study was conducted from 2015-2019 in the Łódź region. The case group included 494 women diagnosed with malignant breast cancer; the control group included 515 healthy women. The research tool was an anonymous questionnaire. In the case group, the percentage of women working shift work was 51.9%, whereas in the control group, it was 34.1% (OR = 2.08 (95% CI: 1.61; 2.69)). A more insightful examination of shift w

On a given workday, employees spend time at work doing tasks that are not work-related, potentially using these micro-breaks (i.e., short breaks that are less than 10 min) to attempt to recover depleted psychological resources such as energy and attention. However, most work break and recovery research has focused on how individuals recover from work during formal nonwork time with longer or unspecified time durations (e.g., lunch breaks, evenings, vacations), limiting theoretical and empirical understanding of whether employees can experience recovery within the workday via brief micro-breaks

This study aimed to explore the effects of a single bout of moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) and high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) on sleep in inactive female healthcare workers with mild sleep impairment during continuous night-shifts. A total of 14 subjects (mean age: 31.8 ± 8.3 years) were randomized to either a MICE (70 ~ 75% of the maximum heart rate (MaxHR) for 47 min), HIIE (90 ~ 95% of the MaxHR for 4 min and 50 ~ 70% for 3 min, for 4 rounds, total 28 min), or the quiet-rest control, 14 h before undertaking a continuous night shift. Sleep quality was assessed sub

This review summarizes the evidence concerning effects of night shift work on women's reproductive health, specifically difficulty in conceiving and miscarriage. We distinguish between fixed night shift and rotating night shift, as the population subgroups exposed, the social and biological mechanisms, and the magnitude of effects are likely to differ; of note, women working fixed night shift are known to have high tolerance for this schedule. We identified two relevant systematic reviews with meta-analyses and five additional studies. Night shift work may give rise to menstrual cycle disturba

About 1.5 million Australians are shift workers. Shift work is associated with adverse health, safety and performance outcomes. Circadian rhythm misalignment, inadequate and poor-quality sleep, and sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea, insomnia and shift work disorder (excessive sleepiness and/or insomnia temporally associated with the work schedule) contribute to these associations. Falling asleep at work at least once a week occurs in 32%-36% of shift workers. Risk of occupational accidents is at least 60% higher for non-day shift workers. Shift workers also have higher rates of cardiometabo

BACKGROUND: Rotating and night shift work, especially in older workers, is a growing health concern of modern societies due to the associated high morbidity and mortality rates from cardiovascular disease (CVD). The resulting circadian misalignment disrupts neuroendocrine pathways that regulate cardiovascular physiology, risking myocardial tissue damage and heart dysfunction.
AIMS: Considering the gaps in the literature as to how atypical work behaviors may disrupt the temporal link between the central and myocardial oscillators at the level of the proteome and transcriptome, the primary goal

Night workers have demonstrated an increased risk of bone fracture. The mechanisms underlying the observed bone changes among night workers remain unclear. They have been attributed to hormonal changes resulting from exposure to light during nighttime, sleep restrictions and distur- bances in expression of circadian rhythms genes. An additional factor that may contribute to increased bone loss among night workers is the con- sumption of caffeinated products. The aim of the work was to review the epidemiological evidence on the association between caffeine consumption and bone density or fractu

The aim of this study was to investigate whether different shift work schedules were associated with nonrapid eye movement (NREM)- and/or REM-related parasomnias. A total of 2198 nurses with different work schedules participated in a longitudinal cohort study. The parasomnia questions were included in the fourth wave of the data collection, with a response rate of 74.1%. Logistic regression analyses with the different parasomnias as dependent variables were conducted. Nurses working two shift (day and evening) and nurses working three shift (day, evening and night) rotational schedules had inc

BACKGROUND: Burnout among nurses is a major global concern, particularly among those working night shifts, which can compromise the quality of nursing care, increase turnover intentions, and threaten the stability of the nursing workforce. Previous studies have shown that work-family conflict correlates positively with burnout in nurses, but not enough research has been performed on its relationship among night-shift nurses with children. In addition, the mechanism of this relationship is not completely clear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationships among work-family conflict

OBJECTIVE: Shift work disrupts circadian rhythms and is established as a risk factor for metabolic syndrome. While poor sleep quality is often hypothesized as the primary mediator linking shift work to dyslipidemia, the extent to which circadian misalignment affects lipid metabolism independently of sleep complaints remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the independent and combined effects of shift work and sleep quality on serum lipid profiles in a cohort of male underground miners.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 921 male miners from the Kailuan Group. Partic

INTRODUCTION: Severe aortic stenosis (AS) can be treated with transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). There is emerging evidence suggesting that high lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) levels may be associated with worse outcomes after TAVI.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) within 12 months after TAVI and long‑term survival in patients with high and low Lp(a) levels.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter cohort study we included patients with severe AS qualified for TAVI with stored plasma available for Lp(a) measurement.
