Prevalence of enterotoxin-encoding genes among diverse Shigella strains isolated from patients with diarrhea, southwest Iran.

Shigella spp. are a major cause of bacillary dysentery, particularly among children in developing countries such as Iran. This study aimed to investigate the presence of two important Shigella enterotoxins (ShET-1 and ShET-2), encoded by the set and sen genes, respectively, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay among Shigella species isolated from children affected by shigellosis in Ahvaz, southwest of Iran. In this cross-sectional study, from June 2016 to April 2017, altogether 117 Shigella isolates were collected from fecal specimens of children aged <15 years with diarrhea in Ahvaz, sout

Molecular characterization of multidrug-resistant Shigella species isolated from epidemic and endemic cases of shigellosis in India.

Shigella species represent one of the growing numbers of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in developing countries. Fluoroquinolone-resistant strains of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 and Shigella flexneri type 2a emerged in India during 2002 and 2003, respectively. Sixty strains of Shigella from different parts of India were analysed for antimicrobial susceptibility, the presence of the qnr plasmid, mutations in the quinolone resistance determining regions (QRDRs), fluoroquinolone accumulation, and the presence of other genes encoding resistance to various antimicrobials. Fluoroquinolone-resistan

Differences among Shigella spp. in susceptibility to the bactericidal activity of human serum.

Clinical isolates of Shigella spp. were examined for their susceptibility to human serum. The susceptibility of the strains to immune and nonimmune human serum was dependent upon the size of the bacterial inoculum and the concentration of serum. There were differences among Shigella spp. in susceptibility to human serum: S. sonnei strains were the least susceptible, strains of S. boydii and S. flexneri serotype 6 were intermediate, and those of S. flexneri other than serotype 6 and S. dysenteriae were the most susceptible. Experiments in which heat-treated (56 degrees C for 30 min, or 50 degre

Shigella spp. and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli pathogenicity factors.

Bacteria of Shigella spp. (S. boydii, S. dysenteriae, S. flexneri and S. sonnei) and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) are responsible for shigellosis in humans, a disease characterized by the destruction of the colonic mucosa that is induced upon bacterial invasion. Shigella spp. and EIEC strains contain a virulence plasmid of approximately 220 kb that encodes determinants for entry into epithelial cells and dissemination from cell to cell. This review presents the current model on mechanisms of invasion of the colonic epithelium by these bacteria and focuses on their pathogenicity facto

Antimicrobial resistance in Shigella species isolated in Dakar, Senegal (2004-2006).

From May 2004 to October 2006, a prospective study was carried out in Dakar, Senegal, to update information about the antimicrobial susceptibility of Shigella spp. isolated from stool specimens. Among the 165 non-duplicate strains collected, 81 (49%) were identified as Shigella flexneri, 75 (45%) as Shigella sonnei, 5 (3%) as Shigella boydii, and 4 (2%) as Shigella dysenteriae. Disk diffusion testing revealed that the majority of isolates were resistant to sulphonamides, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, streptomycin, and tetracycline (respective overall resistance rates: 90, 90, 96, and 94%). [Triple shigellosis in the same patient contracted during operation "Turquoise" in Rwanda].

We report a case of shigellosis observed in a young French sanitary assistant, returning from a refugees camp in Goma after a 5-week stay. Three different species were isolated from stool samples: Shigella flexneri, S. boydii and S. sonnei. This observation raises the matter of a chemical prophylaxis during a short stay in developing countries where sanitary conditions are poor.

[The etiological structure of shigellosis in the former USSR--an indicator of the activity of the main routes of infection transmission].

The data on the etiological structure of Shigella infections in the USSR in 1988-1989 are presented. The study showed the dominating role of S. flexneri with S. sonnei also retaining great importance in Shigella infections. The process of the liquidation of S. dysenteriae and S. boydii infections began in some large cities. The domination of dysentery caused by S. flexneri and a high typhoid rate, particularly in Central Asia, were due to poor water supply of the population. The spread of dysentery caused by S. sonnei was completely independent of the water factor. The decisive role in the tra

Defining the phylogenomics of Shigella species: a pathway to diagnostics.

Shigellae cause significant diarrheal disease and mortality in humans, as there are approximately 163 million episodes of shigellosis and 1.1 million deaths annually. While significant strides have been made in the understanding of the pathogenesis, few studies on the genomic content of the Shigella species have been completed. The goal of this study was to characterize the genomic diversity of Shigella species through sequencing of 55 isolates representing members of each of the four Shigella species: S. flexneri, S. sonnei, S. boydii, and S. dysenteriae. Phylogeny inferred from 336 available
