BACKGROUND: Shivering is one of the most common complications of spinal anesthesia because of inhibition of the thermoregulatory control. Dexmedetomidine and nalbuphine are the two commonly used drugs for treatment of perioperative shivering, but owing to paucity of their comparative data, we planned this study to compare the efficacy of these two drugs for treatment of post spinal shivering.
METHODS: This study was conducted on 80 American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I or II patients aged from 18 to 60 years who developed post-spinal shivering of grade III or IV during elect

BACKGROUND: Postanesthetic shivering is a common complication of anesthesia, which accounts for much discomfort in postoperative patients and may increase postoperative complications in high-risk patients. Due to the lack of high-quality evidence, it is difficult to draw a conclusion about optimal anti-shivering medication. The main purpose of this meta-analysis was to analyze and evaluate the efficacy and safety of prophylactic use of ketamine for preventing postanesthetic shivering.
METHODS: We searched the following databases: Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlle

We report a case of severe shivering resulting in rhabdomyolysis while on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) that resolved after hyperthermia was induced using the ECMO circuit. The patient developed shivering approximately 24 hours after venoarterial ECMO cannulation for refractory ventricular tachycardia. The shivering caused rhabdomyolysis and necessitated cisatracurium infusion. The shivering failed to resolve after the patient was diagnosed and treated for ventilator-associated pneumonia. Suspecting sepsis as the etiology of shivering, the ECMO circuit temperature was

BACKGROUND: During head and neck surgery including orthognathic surgery, mild intraoperative hypothermia occurs frequently. Hypothermia is associated with postanesthetic shivering, which may increase the risk of other postoperative complications. To improve intraoperative thermoregulation, devices such as forced-air warming blankets can be applied. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplemental forced-air warming blankets in preventing postanesthetic shivering.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 113 patients who underwent orthognathic surgery between March and September 2015.

BACKGROUND: Shivering is a frequent undesirable event in patients undergoing cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia. Postanesthetic shivering has a multitude of deleterious effects and different methods have been used to prevent it. We therefore compare the efficacy of ondansetron to that of tramadol in preventing postanesthetic shivering in women undergoing cesarean section under subarachnoid block.
AIM: Comparison of the efficacy of ondansetron to that of tramadol in preventing postanesthetic shivering in women undergoing cesarean section under subarachnoid block.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative shivering is clinically common during cesarean sections under neuraxial anesthesia, and several neuraxial adjuvants are reported to have preventive effects on it. However, the results of current studies are controversial and the effects of these neuraxial adjuvants remain unclear.
AIM: To evaluate the effects of neuraxial adjuvants on perioperative shivering during cesarean sections, thus providing an optimal choice for clinical application.
METHODS: A systematic review and network meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA (Preferred Reported Items for Syste

A 25-yr-old man, subsequently shown to be malignant hyperthermia (MH) susceptible by in vitro contracture testing, developed MH during anaesthesia for tonsillectomy. Prompt treatment, including dantrolene, led to rapid resolution of the metabolic crisis. Eighteen hours later the patient's trachea was extubated in the ICU, when he had been stable and apyrexial overnight. Twenty minutes after extubation, an episode of shivering was followed by the onset of tachycardia, hypertension, tachypnoea and a rapid increase in temperature. Recurrence of MH was suspected and the patient was given another d

BACKGROUND: Postanesthetic shivering (PAS) is a common and distressing complication in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Meperidine has traditionally been used for PAS treatment, but interest in non-opioid alternatives has increased. We compared the effectiveness and safety of dexmedetomidine versus meperidine for the treatment of PAS.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 484 adult patients who developed PAS in the PACU after surgery between January and December 2024 and received intravenous dexmedetomidine or meperidine as the initial treatment. The primary outcome was treat

Opioids are widely used in clinical anesthesia. However, side effects include postoperative nausea and vomiting, shivering, ileus, and urine retention and are specifically discussed here. From the available evidence, it appears that the use of opioids is strongly associated with impaired gastrointestinal motility. Therefore, to prevent postoperative ileus, the use of opioids should be minimized and opioids should be replaced by other drugs. With regard to the risk of postoperative urinary retention, one problem is the lack of standardized definition. Nevertheless, the use of opioids is clearly

The decrease of arterial blood pressure and body temperature after epidural or spinal anesthesia is thought to be the result of sympathetic block, which could cause pooling and redistribution of blood into the lower extremities. Studies have demonstrated that leg wrapping with elastic bandages may reduce the incidence of hypotension after spinal anesthesia. We tried to extend these previous observations to epidural anesthesia by testing the hypothesis that leg wrapping with elastic bandages should decrease the incidence of hypotension in patients receiving epidural anesthesia. Moreover, we eva

Perioperative hypothermia (PHT) and shivering represent significant clinical challenges in geriatric surgical populations. This network meta-analysis (NMA) systematically evaluates the comparative efficacy of various warming interventions in preventing PHT and shivering among elderly patients undergoing abdominal or pelvic surgery. We conducted a comprehensive literature search across PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and China Wanfang databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to April 2024. Inclusion criteria encompassed RCTs comparing warming strategies in patients aged
