[Operative guidelines for the shoe industry: health surveillance].

Medical surveillance of workers exposed to occupational risk factors means secondary prevention and entails medical activities which are related to the assessed risk. In particular, the chief risk factors evaluated in the footwear industry frequently imply medical surveillance of exposed workers. These risk factors include organic solvents and chemicals, leather dust, noise, repetitive movements and upper limb overload, vibrations, manual lifting action and video display terminal operation. We consider some operative standardized and validated protocols for medical surveillance of these indust

[Treatment of urolithiasis in the horse-shoe-shaped kidney].

Seventeen patients with horse-shoe kidneys and nephroliths (5 females, 12 men, age from 17 to 63 years) participated in the trial. All the patients have undergone a complete clinical and laboratory examinations. Use of modern high-tech methods in urology allows one to have a new look on nephroliths treatment in patients with horseshoe kidney. It was found effective to apply extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy if the horse-shoe kidney contains one stone of up to 1.5 cm in size and a latent-stage pyelonephritis. Internal drainage of the ureter by a stent catheter before surgery decreases the ri

The effects of cycling shoe stiffness on forefoot pressure.

Plantar pressure data were recorded in two different shoe types to determine the effect of cycling shoe stiffness on peak plantar forefoot pressure in cyclists. Two pairs of shoes of the same size and manufacturer, identical except for outsole material and stiffness, were tested. Shoe stiffness measurements were collected under controlled conditions and in two different configurations using a dynamic hydraulic tensile testing machine. Measurements of plantar pressure were done using Pedar capacitive-based sensor insoles while subjects pedaled in a seated position at a controlled power output.

Plantar pressure in recreational athletes running in maximal and traditional shoes.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to compare plantar pressure (peak forefoot and rearfoot pressure, center of pressure displacement and distance) between maximal and traditional running shoes in recreationally active individuals. A secondary objective was to assess differences in ankle kinematics and vertical ground reaction forces between shoe conditions. DESIGN: A repeated-measures experimental design compared the two shoe conditions (maximal vs. traditional) within the same participants. METHODS: Twenty recreationally active adults (11 females, 9 males) performed five ov

Biomechanical Analysis of Running Foot Strike in Shoes of Different Mass.

Different shoes and strike patterns produce different biomechanical characteristics that can affect injury risk. Running shoes are mainly designed as lightweight, minimal, or traditional cushioned types. Previous research on different shoes utilized shoes of not only different mass but also different shoe structures. However, it is unclear whether biomechanical changes during running in different shoe types with differing mass are the result of the structural design or the mass of the shoe. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shoes of different mass on running gait

Heeled Shoes Increase Knee Work Demand During Repeated Hopping in Dancers.

AIMS: Dancers have high injury rates of the lower extremity. External factors such as footwear likely alter the work demands placed on the lower extremity joints when performing dance-style movements. Research on pedestrians shows an increase in knee work demand when wearing heels, which may occur in dancers as well. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of heeled shoes on lower extremity joint work demand during a basic dance-specific jump (sauté) in dancers when compared to barefoot. METHODS: Ten healthy, female dancers (age 25.6±4.7 yrs; height 1.7±0.1 m; weight 64.9±9.2 kg; m

The effects of high heeled shoes on female gait: a review.

Walking is the most common form of human locomotion. From a motor control perspective, human bipedalism makes the task of walking extremely complex. For parts of the step cycle, there is only one foot on the ground, so both balance and propulsion are required in order for the movement to proceed smoothly. One condition known to compound the difficulty of walking is the use of high heeled shoes, which alter the natural position of the foot-ankle complex, and thereby produce a chain reaction of (mostly negative) effects that travels up the lower limb at least as far as the spine. This review sum

Assessment of plantar pressure in forefoot relief shoes of different designs.

BACKGROUND: After reconstructive forefoot surgery, patients require complete or partial forefoot relief, which can be obtained with a variety of shoe designs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different types of forefoot-relief shoes frequently used after surgery, especially their safety against unintentional forefoot load. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers were asked to perform five trials on a treadmill at self-selected speeds. In the first trial, mean peak pressure values in mass-produced shoes and insoles were evaluated and considered as 100%. Two different shoe

Hypothesis: Pump shoes for the prevention and treatment of varicose veins.

BACKGROUND: This hypothesis introduces pump shoes as a method for the prevention and treatment of varicose veins. METHOD: An air pump is placed in the shoe, connected to an airbag wrapped around the leg through a hose. With each step, air is pumped into the foot airbag, applying pressure to the leg muscles and superficial veins. This action mimics muscle pumping, helping to push blood back towards the heart. Excess air is released through an outlet hose with an adjustable sphincter, allowing for increased pressure on the leg. RESULTS & CONCLUSION: These shoes offer a simple mechanism to assi

Leg and Joint Stiffness Adaptations to Minimalist and Maximalist Running Shoes.

The running footwear literature reports a conceptual disconnect between shoe cushioning and external impact loading: footwear or surfaces with greater cushioning tend to result in greater impact force characteristics during running. Increased impact loading with maximalist footwear may reflect an altered lower-extremity gait strategy to adjust for running in compliant footwear. The authors hypothesized that ankle and knee joint stiffness would change to maintain the effective vertical stiffness, as cushioning changed with minimalist, traditional, and maximalist footwear. Eleven participants ra
