Necrotising sialometaplasia (NSM) is a non-neoplastic lesion mainly arising in the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. In the clinical features, NSM shows swelling with or without ulceration, and can mimic a malignant disease such as squamous cell carcinoma. Histopathologically, NSM usually shows the lobular architecture that is observed in the salivary glands. Additionally, acinar infarction and squamous metaplasia of salivary ducts and acini are observable. The aetiology of this lesion remains unknown, although it has a characteristic feature that sometimes requires clinical and histop

A wide range of non neoplastic disorders can affect the salivary glands, although the more common are: mumps, acute suppurative sialadenitis, Sjögren's syndrome and drug-induced xerostomia. Salivary dysfunction is not a normal consequence of old age, and can be due to systemic diseases, medications or head and neck radiotherapy. Diagnosis of salivary disorders begins with a careful medical history, followed by a cautious examination. While complaints of xerostomia may be indicative of a salivary gland disorder, salivary diseases can present without symptoms. Therefore, routine examination of s

Aphthous ulcers are painful ulcerations located on the mucous membrane, generally in the mouth, less often in the genital area. Three clinical forms of aphthous ulcers have been described: minor aphthous ulcers, herpetiform aphthous ulcers and major aphthous ulcers. Many other conditions presenting with oral bullous or vesiculous lesions orulcerations and erosions can be mistaken for aphthous ulcers. Currently, treatment of aphthous ulcers is palliative and symptomatic. Topical treatments (topical anesthetics, topical steroids and sucralfate) are the first line therapy. Recurrent aphthous stom

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing sialometoplasia (NS) is a disease in which the clinical and sometimes even histological features can be confused with those of a malignant tumor, but which is in fact a self-limited inflammatory lesion of the salivary glands.
CASE REPORT: The authors present a case study of a 43-year-old female patient who came to the ENT Emergency Department with a painful ulcerated lesion of the hard palate. The lesion was 8 days old and had appeared after an abdominoplasty. Given the clinical need to rule out a malignant neoplasm, a biopsy was performed: the histological result wa

Keratosytoma is a rare, benign salivary gland tumor designated as a new entity by Nagao et al. in 2002. Recently, the discovery of RUNX2 gene rearrangement as a characteristic genetic alteration has established its classification as a distinct neoplasm, solidifying the inclusion of keratocystoma in the 5th edition of the WHO classification of Head and Neck Tumors. Clinically, keratocystoma occurs across a broad age range but is most prevalent among younger individuals, with no significant sex predilection. It typically presents as a slow-growing parotid mass. Histologically, the tumor is chara

Warthin tumor (WT) owing to its heterogeneous appearance, biological behavior and multicentricity poses a diagnostic challenge to cytologists worldwide. We report a rare double pathology of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) with WT which was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA). Cytological smears revealed sheets of epithelial cells and small clusters of squamous cells in a background of mucoid material along with a few small groups and scattered oncocytic cells and inflammatory cells (mainly lymphocytes). In view of the cytological findings various differentials such as oncocytic lesions, b

Reassessment of histological specimens of salivary gland carcinomas is associated with a change of primary diagnosis in a significant number of patients. The authors evaluated the relation between reclassification/verification of histological diagnosis and the clinical course of parotid gland carcinomas. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations of 111 specimens of parotid gland carcinomas operated on during the years 1992-2010 were revised and in some cases supplemented with cytogenetic tests (FISH), to verify the diagnosis and potentially reclassify the tumours. Analysis of the clini

Keratocystoma is considered a rare, benign salivary gland tumor predominantly occurring in the parotid gland. Owing to its rarity, insufficiently recognized clinicopathological features, immunohistochemical (IHC) phenotype, and molecular characteristics, keratocystoma remains diagnostically challenging. This study aimed to investigate the clinical, histological, and molecular features of keratocystoma to refine the histological diagnostic boundaries. Nineteen cases of keratocystoma were analyzed using fluorescence in situ hybridization, targeted RNA sequencing, and IHC. Histological mimics, in

Although drugs are the most powerful therapeutic tools we have for improving the quality of life of the population, their use is not free of adverse effects. Today there are many polymedicated patients, and it is difficult to find the cause of their adverse effects that increase exponentially when more than 4 drugs are combined. There are a large number of drugs that can result in numerous adverse effects in the oral cavity. The most common are xerostomia, altered taste, gingival enlargement and mucositis caused by cancer treatment. We also review other disorders of the salivary glands, oral m

This article has not attempted to exhaustively review mucosal diseases of the oral cavity. We have, however, described some oral mucous membrane lesions which need to be kept in mind during the head and neck examination.

The early recognition of salivary gland disease depends upon a high index of suspicion by the clinician. A systematic approach to salivary gland disease in children is presented by a group of algorithms, which is supplemented by a discussion of the historical, physical, and diagnostic test findings characteristic of salivary gland pathology. Therapeutic alternatives are discussed for both neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders.

Primary sinonasal tract mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MEC) are uncommon tumors that are frequently misclassified, resulting in inappropriate clinical management. The design of this study is retrospective. Nineteen cases of MEC included 10 females and 9 males, aged 15-75 years (mean, 52.7 years); males, on average were younger by a decade than females (47.2 vs. 57.7 years). Patients presented most frequently with a mass, obstructive symptoms, pain, and/or epistaxis present for a mean of 12.6 months. The majority of tumors involved the nasal cavity alone (n=10), maxillary sinus alone (n=6), or a co
