Semi-nested PCR detection of Bartonella henselae in Ixodes persulcatus ticks from Western Siberia, Russia.

Questing adult Ixodes persulcatus ticks from Western Siberia, Russia were tested for infections with Bartonella spp. using seminested PCR assay with primers specific to the groEL gene. The proportion of ticks infected with Bartonella spp. was 44% in 2002 (n = 50) and 38% in 2003 (n = 50). Nucleotide sequences of a portion of the PCR products corresponded to Bartonella henselae species.

Increased Frequencies of the ‒174G and ‒572C IL6 Alleles in Populations of Indigenous Peoples of Siberia Compared to Russians.

Abstract-The study of immune response and inflammation gene polymorphisms in a genogeographic context is relevant in the study of human populations. Here, in the indigenous populations of Siberia the frequencies of polymorphic variants ‒174G/C (rs1800795) and ‒572C/G (rs1800796) of the IL6 gene encoding the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 were determined. For the first time, it was shown that the frequencies of the ‒174G and ‒572C alleles, which determine increased inflammatory response and are also associated with several diseases were statistically significantly higher in ethnic groups of Bury

Pharmacokinetics of Ascending Doses of Praziquantel in Adults Infected with Opisthorchis felineus in Western Siberia, Russian Federation.

Opisthorchiasis due to the liver fluke Opisthorchis felineus is highly prevalent in rural regions of Western Siberia, causing severe liver and bile duct maladies. Praziquantel administered as a three-dose regimen is the only drug used to treat O. felineus-infected individuals. A simpler single-dose treatment might serve as an alternative. The aim of this study was to compare the pharmacokinetic (PK) properties of single, ascending doses of praziquantel compared to multiple dosing in patients infected with O. felineus to contribute to updated treatment guidelines. Dried blood spots (DBSs) of 11

Detection of tick-borne pathogens in wild birds and their ticks in Western Siberia and high level of their mismatch.

The Tomsk region located in the south of Western Siberia is one of the most high-risk areas for tick-borne diseases due to elevated incidence of tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease in humans. Wild birds may be considered as one of the reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens and hosts for infected ticks. A high mobility of wild birds leads to unpredictable possibilities for the dissemination of tick-borne pathogens into new geographical regions. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in wild birds and ticks that feed on them as well as to determin

[Radioimmunological analysis in studying the persistence of the plague antigen in the body of rodents and ectoparasites in natural foci in Siberia].

To study the persistence of Y. pestis capsular antigen, or fraction 1 (F1), in the body of less important plague carriers in the Mountain Altai and Transbaikal natural foci, as well as in experimentally infected ticks, the liquid-phase competitive radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used for the first time. In this study RIA showed, due to its sensitivity, doubtless advantages over traditional methods, such as the passive hemagglutination (PHA) test and the antibody neutralization (AN) test, and made it possible to detect F1 in picogram amounts. RIA revealed that F1 persisted in Siberian long-tailed go

[Experience in the study of the epidemiology and prevention of intestinal infections under conditions of the extreme north of western Siberia].

A study was made of peculiarities of typhoid and dysentery and of conditions promoting the spread of these infections in the Yamalo-Nenetsk National Area. The efficacy of antiepidemic measures conducted against these infections under conditions of the extreme north was assessed. A sharp fall of typhoid incidence was reached. As to dysentery-the complex of measures carried out could not significantly influence the direction of the epidemic process (for this purpose elaboration of special prophylactic measures is required).

Genomic Characterization of a Novel Yezo Virus Revealed in Ixodes pavlovskyi Tick Virome in Western Siberia.

Ixodid ticks are blood-sucking ectoparasites of vertebrates. They constitute an integral part of natural foci and are responsible for the worldwide transmission of infections to humans, which can result in severe symptoms. For instance, the Tomsk region, where three abundant tick species (Dermacentor reticulatus, Ixodes pavlovskyi, I. persulcatus) occur, is an endemic area for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). An increasing number of novel infectious agents carried by ticks have been identified using metagenomic sequencing. A notable example is the Yezo virus (Orthonairovirus yezoense, YEZ

[Long-term and seasonal dynamics of vitamin D supply indicators for the population of the Western Siberia region].

Despite the active study of vitamin D, today the problem of its insufficient supply remains relevant both in Russia and throughout the world. In our country, the situation is affected by the geographical, climatic, as well as ethnic and cultural characteristics of each region. It is of interest to assess the temporal and territorial characteristics of the population's sufficiency. The purpose of the study was to analyze long-term and intra-annual dynamics of vitamin D status among residents of the Western Siberia region for the correction of prevention programs. Material and methods. An analys

Non-Polio Enterovirus Surveillance in the Ural Federal District and Western Siberia, 2022: Is There a Need for a Vaccine?

Human non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) are the etiological agents involved in most cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD), herpangina and aseptic meningitis. Information on the epidemiology profiles of NPEV in the Ural Federal District and Western Siberia is very limited, with no published data available. The aim of this study is to describe NPEV incidence in the Ural Federal District and Western Siberia among patients with different forms of non-polio enterovirus infections (NPEVIs) during 2022, stratified by age and clinical manifestations. A total of 265 samples that tested positive for

Different Rates of the SLC26A4-Related Hearing Loss in Two Indigenous Peoples of Southern Siberia (Russia).

Hereditary hearing loss (HL) is known to be highly locus/allelic heterogeneous, and the prevalence of different HL forms significantly varies among populations worldwide. Investigation of region-specific landscapes of hereditary HL is important for local healthcare and medical genetic services. Mutations in the SLC26A4 gene leading to nonsyndromic recessive deafness (DFNB4) and Pendred syndrome are common genetic causes of hereditary HL, at least in some Asian populations. We present for the first time the results of a thorough analysis of the SLC26A4 gene by Sanger sequencing in the large coh

[Analysis of genomes of two rubella virus strains from the 2004-2005 outbreaks in West Siberia].

Two outbreaks of rubella infections notified in the Tomsk and Kemerovo Regions were investigated. Two rubella virus strains from one patient in each outbreak were isolated and genetically characterized. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to reveal partial E1 gene sequence at a length of 915 nucleotides. Analysis indicated that the rubella virus strains circulating in the West-Siberian region belonged to international genetic 1g group, which had been first detected in Russia.

[An attempt at the serological examination of small mammals in a natural focus of tick-borne encephalitis in central Siberia].

Studies of blood serum samples from Asian mice from a natural focus of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in the Krasnoyarsk district, in which agent strains of medium peripheral activity for white mice predominated, in the hemagglutination inhibition test have given negative results. At the same time murine sera were detected with nonspecific inhibitors to TBE virus in low titers (1:10 to 1:20), this being confirmed by enzyme immunoassay. Of the tested in 1988-1991 1047 mice of 11 species the share of sera with nonspecific inhibitors (and, consequently, positive ones) has made up 3.3 +/- 1.9/0.0 f

Metagenome-assembled genomes from northern West Siberia: insights into microbial diversity in permafrost and contemporary soils.

AIMS: Permafrost thawing due to global warming threatens to release long-preserved microbial communities, including potentially novel bacterial lineages. Despite the importance of West Siberian permafrost for climate models, genome-resolved studies of its microbial diversity remain limited. This study aimed to recover and characterize metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from permafrost and contemporary soils of northern West Siberia, and to assess their biosynthetic and antibiotic resistance potential. METHODS AND RESULTS: We reconstructed 117 MAGs from soil samples collected from northern We

Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Lateral Carbon Dynamics at an Eroding Yedoma Permafrost Site in Siberia (Duvanny Yar).

Rapid Arctic warming is accelerating permafrost thaw and mobilizing previously frozen organic carbon (OC) into waterways. Upon thaw, permafrost-derived OC can become susceptible to microbial degradation that may lead to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), thus accelerating climate change. Abrupt permafrost thaw (e.g., riverbank erosion, retrogressive thaw slumps) occurs in areas rich in OC. Given the high OC content and the increase in frequency of abrupt thaw events, these environments may increasingly contribute to permafrost GHG emissions in the future. To better assess these emissions from abr
