Cold Acclimation in Genetically Related (Sibling) Deciduous and Evergreen Peach (Prunus persica [L.] Batsch): I. Seasonal Changes in Cold Hardiness and Polypeptides of Bark and Xylem Tissues.

Seasonal patterns of proteins and of cold hardiness were characterized in bark and xylem tissues of genetically related (sibling) deciduous and evergreen peach (Prunus persica [L.] Batsch). In contrast with deciduous trees, which entered endodormancy and abscised leaves in the fall, evergreen trees retained their leaves and exhibited shoot elongation under favorable environmental conditions. A successive increase in the cold hardiness of bark and xylem was observed during the fall in both genotypes. This was followed by a subsequent decrease from midwinter to spring. Xylem tissue in both genot

Quality-adjusted time without symptoms or toxicity analysis of haploidentical-related donor vs. identical sibling donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in acute myeloid leukemia.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the quality-adjusted time without symptoms or toxicity (Q-TWiST) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients who received haploidentical-related donor (HID) and identical sibling donor (ISD) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). METHODS: Five clinical health states were defined: toxicity (TOX), acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), chronic GVHD (cGVHD), time without symptoms and toxicity (TWiST) and relapse (REL). The equation used in this study was as follows: Q-TWiST=UTOX × TOX + UTWiST × TWiST + UREL × REL + UaGVHD × aGVHD + UcGVHD × cGVHD. RESULTS:

Mentally retarded adults and their siblings.

The relationships of 35 community-based mildly mentally retarded adults and their siblings were examined through participant-observation techniques over an 18-month period. Five kinds of sibling relationships were identified based on the independent ranking of each sibling pair on a continuum that reflected three major relationship dimensions: warmth, frequency of contact, and degree of involvement. These relationships were described as were some general patterns that seem to have the greatest impact on relations between retarded adults and their siblings.

Graft Versus Host Disease Following HLA-Matched Sibling Donor Compared with Matched Related Donor for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for the Treatment of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease.

BACKGROUND: One of the limiting factors for successful hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is graft versus host disease (GVHD). The EBMT/ESID guidelines for HSCT in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) recommend no GVHD prophylaxis for a matched sibling donor (MSD). OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of GVHD in MSD HSCT for SCID patients compared to matched related donor (MRD). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compares MSD with MRD and the outcome of GVHD in all SCID patients who underwent HSCT between 1993 and 2013. All statistical analyses were done using IBM SPSS stati

Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation with related donors other than HLA MLC-matched siblings, and the use of antithymocyte globulin, prednisone, and methotrexate for prophylaxis of graft-versus-host disease.

Fifteen patients ranging in age from 1-29 years (median age 9 years) had bone marrow transplantations (BMT) from related donors other than HLA mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) identical siblings. Donors were selected on the basis of HLA similarity and low reactivity in the MLC. Posttransplant immunosuppression consisting of methotrexate (MTX), antithymocyte globulin (ATG), and prednisone was used in an effort to decrease graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Seven children were treated for aplastic anemia, 7 for hematologic malignancy, and 1 for osteopetrosis. Primary engraftment failure contributed

Predicting the Emotions of Brothers and Sisters of Individuals with Down Syndrome/Autism.

Within a family system, when a sibling is diagnosed with Down Syndrome (DS) or autism, it can pose significant challenges for the non-diagnosed sibling, especially as the non-diagnosed sibling is often responsible for the future care of the diagnosed sibling. DS and autism have specific characteristics that may uniquely influence sibling relations, particularly the emotions towards the sibling with the disability. The current study focused on the role of sense of coherence (SOC) in predicting the emotions of emerging adult siblings of individuals with DS/autism. There were 543 participants ran

Siblings as buffers: Social problems and internalizing and externalizing behaviors across early adolescence.

Youth who struggle to maintain positive peer relationships are more likely to display emotional and behavioral problems, particularly during adolescence. Alternative avenues of social support may buffer against these maladaptive outcomes, particularly sibling relations, as they oftentimes predict adolescent outcomes above and beyond that of parents and peers. The present study examined the role of objective sibling warmth on the longitudinal association between social problems and maladjustment in a sample of 45 adolescent sibling dyads, further testing how effects varied between younger (Mage

'When it comes to relational trauma, you need people at the table': Therapist experiences of online therapy for families with a prior disclosure of sibling sexual abuse during Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

This study aims to contribute to the evaluation of online therapy during Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns, by exploring family therapists' experiences of therapy for twelve Sibling Sexual Abuse (SSA) families in the Netherlands. Seven transcripts of interviews with highly specialised Dutch family therapists were analysed using thematic analysis (TA). Two main findings emerged from this study. First, the Dutch therapists reported no acute worries about their clients' sexual safety during the pandemic lockdowns. Nonetheless, the switch to online therapy for the SSA families created concern regarding

Homozygous status for HLA-E*0103 confers protection from acute graft-versus-host disease and transplant-related mortality in HLA-matched sibling hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The posttransplant period following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is potentially high risk for developing survival-compromising complications, many of which are known to be under the control of immunogenetic factors. Given the dual role of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-E molecules in innate and adaptive immune processes, we analyzed the impact of HLA-E polymorphism in genoidentical HSCT setting. METHODS: We analyzed 187 HLA-genoidentical sibling pairs for HLA-E polymorphism. To explore its potential association with the incidence of acute and chronic graft versus

Hurler syndrome: II. Outcome of HLA-genotypically identical sibling and HLA-haploidentical related donor bone marrow transplantation in fifty-four children. The Storage Disease Collaborative Study Group.

Untreated patients with Hurler syndrome (MPSIH) experience progressive neurologic deterioration and early death. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) ameliorates or halts this course. The Storage Disease Collaborative Study Group was formed to evaluate the effectiveness and toxicity of BMT. Effectiveness was defined as engrafted survival with continuing cognitive development. Fifty-four patients deficient in leukocyte alpha-L-iduronidase enzyme activity (median age, 1.8 years; range, 0.4 to 7.9) received high-dose chemotherapy with or without irradiation and BMT from HLA-genotypically

[Contact behavior of elderly females living alone from the social psychologic viewpoint--an exploratory study. II: Social contact with children (close relations) and with other relatives (siblings, extended family)].

After a theoretical introduction, the authors present the results of an exploratory study on the social contacts between older women living alone and their children and other relatives, respectively. It seems to be of special importance for future examinations not to confine oneself to recording the quality and the quantity of such contacts. The necessity of a description of the social contacts in substance in the individual fields of contact is pointed out.

Stable individual differences on developmental tasks in young yellow-crowned parakeets, Cyanoramphus auriceps.

We report on stable individual differences in young yellow-crowned parakeets across 38 tasks of cognitive development on three scales involving object permanence, means-end relations, and spatial relations. Stable performance ranks on blocks of tasks emerged after 13 weeks in two groups of sibling parakeets, one hand-reared and the other parent-reared. Examination of subject characteristics, such as hatch order, sex, general activity level, avoidances, latencies, social status, and errors, showed no significant correlations with these performance ranks. Characteristic individual approaches to

Reactions, Adaptation, and Support Needs of Siblings of Children with a Life-Limiting Disease: The Parents' Experiences.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Siblings of children with the life-limiting disease Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) are growing up witnessing rapid disease progression and death, affecting development and psychological wellbeing. Family-centred palliative care should include sibling support, but research on sibling needs is scarce. This semi-structured interview study aims to describe parents' perceptions of siblings' behavioural adaptation, emotional reactions, and support needs. METHODS: Seven parents recruited from a national resource centre for rare disorders participated in semi-structured int

Relationship classification using grade of membership analysis: a typology of sibling relationships in later life.

The results of a comparison of two typologies of sibling relationships in old age are reported. Both analyses rely on the same data collected in individual interviews with adults over the age of 65. The first typology was constructed using constant comparative analysis; the second relied on the grade of membership (GOM) technique. This is the first time GOM has been used to create a taxonomy of human relationships based on psychosocial variables. The two typologies are compared in terms of number of types generated, the characteristics of each type, factors influencing typological construction

Emerging adults' emotions toward their siblings with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Typically-developing siblings of individuals with Down Syndrome often experience complex emotions towards their sibling. This study explored how social support, personal resources (optimism, sense of coherence [SOC]), and individual variables (sex, religious affiliation, siblings' functionality) may impact emerging adult siblings' emotions toward their sibling with Down Syndrome. METHODS: Participants were 292 siblings of individuals with DS ranging in age from 18-27 (M=21.54, SD=2.50). Participants completed self-report questionnaires exploring optimism, SOC, support, and accepta

Parental reactions to parent- and sibling-directed aggression within a domestic violence context.

Parent- and sibling-directed aggression by minor children are two forms of family violence that often co-occur and have strong relations to prior exposure to domestic violence, yet are often overlooked in intervention efforts. In addition, current research does not examine these forms of family violence in tandem, and there is very limited research with samples exposed to domestic violence. To better understand how these forms of aggression operate within a domestic violence context, we interviewed 44 women residing in a domestic violence shelter with at least one child over 3.5 years of age w

How do typically developing brothers and sisters accept their siblings with Down syndrome or autism? An examination of personal characteristics.

Typically developing siblings' acceptance of a sibling with Down syndrome (DS) or autism influences the nature of sibling relations and their willingness to care for their sibling with disability in the future. Optimism is a central personality characteristic in coping with challenging life situations and the emotions toward the sibling with Down syndrome/autism are prominent in siblings' adjustment to their complex circumstances. The current study examined how optimism and emotions toward a sibling with Down syndrome or autism influence typically developing siblings' acceptance of their sibli

Association of psychiatric and substance use disorder comorbidity with cocaine dependence severity and treatment utilization in cocaine-dependent individuals.

The relations among psychiatric and substance dependence disorders and treatment utilization are of interest both for their clinical management and for health services. We examined these relations using six self-reported indices of cocaine dependence severity and three self-reported measures of treatment utilization and self-help group participation for cocaine dependence. The sample consisted of dyads: namely, a cocaine-dependent adult proband (N=449) and a cocaine-dependent sibling (N=449). Psychiatric and substance use disorders were assessed with the Semi-structured Assessment for Drug Dep
