Risk of early language deprivation among deaf bilinguals with early signing experience: Evidence from American Sign Language basic word order and bilingual proficiency.

This study aims to examine the role of early signing input on the robust reliance on ASL basic word order by deaf adult ASL signers who are exposed to different types of signing (ASL versus signing systems, SS) by early childhood. We used a sentence-picture matching task involving transitive ASL sentences in subject-verb-object order with consistent or conflicting animacy cues. All signers with early ASL input (12 native signers, 12 non-native signers with early ASL) showed robust reliance on ASL word order and good bilingual skills, while 37.5% (6/16) non-native signers with early exposure to

The ASL-LEX 2.0 Project: A Database of Lexical and Phonological Properties for 2,723 Signs in American Sign Language.

ASL-LEX is a publicly available, large-scale lexical database for American Sign Language (ASL). We report on the expanded database (ASL-LEX 2.0) that contains 2,723 ASL signs. For each sign, ASL-LEX now includes a more detailed phonological description, phonological density and complexity measures, frequency ratings (from deaf signers), iconicity ratings (from hearing non-signers and deaf signers), transparency ("guessability") ratings (from non-signers), sign and videoclip durations, lexical class, and more. We document the steps used to create ASL-LEX 2.0 and describe the distributional char

Sign language narrative reveals universal and modality-specific features of cortical timescale hierarchy.

Human languages are unique in their capacity to tell stories. Prior neuroimaging studies show that spoken language narrative comprehension engages a neural time-scale hierarchy, from words and sentences to narratives. Sign languages share core features with spoken languages but also have modality-specific elements such as use of hands, face and spatial position to convey meaning and mark grammar. Here, we use naturalistic fMRI to examine which aspects of the language hierarchy are speech-specific versus modality-general. Native signers (n = 20) watched a 20-minute Polish Sign Language interpre

Gaze direction as framing for interaction in sign language-interpreted routine postnatal visits.

This study aims to gain insight into participants' use of gaze in sign language-interpreted consultations in health centres for babies and toddlers in the Norwegian context. The study investigates how gaze direction and eye contact frame the interaction between participants comprising mothers who are deaf and health personnel who are hearing. The empirical material is based on five video recordings of interpreted health consultations, and multimodal interaction analysis is used to examine the participants' use of gaze in these interactions. The analysis demonstrates differences in eye contact

Highly Stretchable Double Network Ionogels for Monitoring Physiological Signals and Detecting Sign Language.

At the heart of the non-implantable electronic revolution lies ionogels, which are remarkably conductive, thermally stable, and even antimicrobial materials. Yet, their potential has been hindered by poor mechanical properties. Herein, a double network (DN) ionogel crafted from 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Emim]Cl), acrylamide (AM), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was constructed. Tensile strength, fracture elongation, and conductivity can be adjusted across a wide range, enabling researchers to fabricate the material to meet specific needs. With adjustable mechanical properties, such as

Bioinspired Photoreceptors with Neural Network for Recognition and Classification of Sign Language Gesture.

This work addresses the design and implementation of a novel PhotoBiological Filter Classifier (PhBFC) to improve the accuracy of a static sign language translation system. The captured images are preprocessed by a contrast enhancement algorithm inspired by the capacity of retinal photoreceptor cells from mammals, which are responsible for capturing light and transforming it into electric signals that the brain can interpret as images. This sign translation system not only supports the effective communication between an agent and an operator but also between a community with hearing disabiliti

The Cortical Organization of Syntactic Processing Is Supramodal: Evidence from American Sign Language.

Areas within the left-lateralized neural network for language have been found to be sensitive to syntactic complexity in spoken and written language. Previous research has revealed that these areas are active for sign language as well, but whether these areas are specifically responsive to syntactic complexity in sign language independent of lexical processing has yet to be found. To investigate the question, we used fMRI to neuroimage deaf native signers' comprehension of 180 sign strings in American Sign Language (ASL) with a picture-probe recognition task. The ASL strings were all six signs

Dissociating linguistic and non-linguistic gesture processing: electrophysiological evidence from American Sign Language.

A fundamental advance in our understanding of human language would come from a detailed account of how non-linguistic and linguistic manual actions are differentiated in real time by language users. To explore this issue, we targeted the N400, an ERP component known to be sensitive to semantic context. Deaf signers saw 120 American Sign Language sentences, each consisting of a "frame" (a sentence without the last word; e.g. BOY SLEEP IN HIS) followed by a "last item" belonging to one of four categories: a high-close-probability sign (a "semantically reasonable" completion to the sentence; e.g.

Klinefelter syndrome in childhood: language delay as an early warning sign for diagnosis.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS), the most common sex chromosome aneuploidy in males, is often underdiagnosed until adolescence, delaying early intervention. We describe 11 pediatric patients with KS who were followed between 2005 and 2025 to identify early markers. Three were diagnosed prenatally; the remaining eight were diagnosed at a median age of 6.1 years, mainly due to neurodevelopmental problems. Of the total of 11 patients, 9 had delayed language acquisition, followed by 8 with psychomotor delay, 5 with behavioral disorders, 3 with sleep disorders, and 2 with epilepsy. Endocrinological comor

Morphology, Not Motion: Benchmarking Vision-Language Models on Multi-Sign Lung Ultrasound Interpretation.

Background: Point-of-care lung ultrasound (LUS) interpretation requires specialized training. Vision-language models (VLMs) may automate multi-sign assessment but lack systematic clinical benchmarking. We benchmarked three LUS tasks on 125 evaluable cases drawn from 150 point- of-care ultrasound (POCUS) Atlas clips to establish baseline capabilities and isolate clinically relevant failure modes for VLM-based LUS interpretation. Methods: We evaluated a normalized multi-model benchmark on three tasks: pleural sliding detection (T1), lung-rocket (B-line) and consolidation classification (T2), and

Innovations in Deaf Health Care Communication: Systematic Review of Sign Language Recognition Systems.

BACKGROUND: Deaf individuals often face communication challenges when interacting with those who can hear. Within health care settings, these challenges may pose risks to their safety, potentially resulting in misdiagnoses, treatment errors, and decreased quality of care. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically review the evidence on communication systems reported in the literature that use human-computer interaction techniques to support communication between deaf individuals who use sign language and hearing health professionals in health care settings. The review focuses on systems th

A Smart Textile-Based Tactile Sensing System for Multi-Channel Sign Language Recognition.

Sign language recognition plays a crucial role in enabling communication for deaf individuals, yet current methods face limitations such as sensitivity to lighting conditions, occlusions, and lack of adaptability in diverse environments. This study presents a wearable multi-channel tactile sensing system based on smart textiles, designed to capture subtle wrist and finger motions for static sign language recognition. The system leverages triboelectric yarns sewn into gloves and sleeves to construct a skin-conformal tactile sensor array, capable of detecting biomechanical interactions through c

Sign language delays in deaf 3- to 5-year-olds with deaf parents.

Research has demonstrated that deaf children of deaf signing parents (DOD) are afforded developmental advantages. This can be misconstrued as indicating that no DOD children exhibit early language delays (ELDs) because of their early access to a visual language. Little research has studied this presumption. In this study, we examine 174 ratings of DOD 3- to 5-year-old children, for whom signing in the home was indicated, using archival data from the online database of the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checklist. Our goals were to (1) examine the incidence of ELDs in a cohort of DOD ch

Sign language delays in deaf 3- to 5-year-olds with hearing parents.

Deaf children of hearing parents (DOH) are at risk for early language delays (ELD) due to environmental and etiological factors, compounding the previously reported higher incidence of ELD in deaf children of deaf parents (DOD) compared to the general population. Archival data from the online database of the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checklist yielded 147 ratings of DOH 3- to 5-year-old children whose parents reported American sign language (ASL) being used in the home at least equally to spoken language. Research goals included (1) examining the incidence of ELD in this cohort, (

Computerized Sign Language-Based Literacy Training for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children.

Strengthening the connections between sign language and written language may improve reading skills in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) signing children. The main aim of the present study was to investigate whether computerized sign language-based literacy training improves reading skills in DHH signing children who are learning to read. Further, longitudinal associations between sign language skills and developing reading skills were investigated. Participants were recruited from Swedish state special schools for DHH children, where pupils are taught in both sign language and spoken language. R

Benefits of sign language interpreting and text alternatives for deaf students' classroom learning.

Four experiments examined the utility of real-time text in supporting deaf students' learning from lectures in postsecondary (Experiments 1 and 2) and secondary classrooms (Experiments 3 and 4). Experiment 1 compared the effects on learning of sign language interpreting, real-time text (C-Print), and both. Real-time text alone led to significantly higher performance by deaf students than the other two conditions, but performance by deaf students in all conditions was significantly below that of hearing peers who saw lectures without any support services. Experiment 2 compared interpreting and

Interpreter's wrist. Repetitive stress injury and carpal tunnel syndrome in sign language interpreters.

Forty interpreters attending a regional Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf conference completed a questionnaire regarding symptoms related to repetitive stress injury (RSI), a generic classification of problems that occur after extensive, repetitive motion. RSIs, including the most prevalent form, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), were surveyed. The vast majority (87.5%) of the interpreters in the sample reported that they had at sometime experienced at least two symptoms associated with RSI. Some (12.5%) who had CTS reported that they had been misdiagnosed. When asked how many other interprete

An Initial Investigation of the American Sign Language Version of the Self-Determination Inventory.

Self-determination is a potential predictor of in-school and postschool success, yet it has not previously been examined in youth and young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). The present study used a cross-sectional survey design to examine the reliability and validity of the American Sign Language (ASL) version of the Self-Determination Inventory: Student Report (ASL SDI:SR) and to develop an understanding of mean self-determination strengths and areas of need in a sample of youth and young adults who were DHH; 221 participants completed the ASL SDI:SR, including individuals repres

Examining signed language challenges of early- and late-exposed deaf children.

Many deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children who are exposed to a signed language acquire their language with seemingly little effort and communicate effectively with other signers. However, some children struggle with aspects of comprehension or production, and their communication with other signers is hindered. An online survey was used to gather estimates from professionals who work with signing DHH children about aspects of signed language comprehension and production that tend to be challenging for DHH children who are exposed to a signed language early and regularly throughout childhood
