Questionnaires based on natural language processing elicit immersive ruminative thinking in ruminators: Evidence from behavioral responses and EEG data.

Rumination is closely related to mental disorders and can thus be used as a marker of their presence or a predictor of their development. The presence of masking and fabrication in psychological selection can lead to inaccurate detection of psychological disorders. Human language is considered crucial in eliciting specific conscious activities, and the use of natural language processing (NLP) in the development of questionnaires for psychological tests has the potential to elicit immersive ruminative thinking, leading to changes in neural activity. Electroencephalography (EEG) is commonly used

The inflammasome: pathways linking psychological stress, depression, and systemic illnesses.

Stress is a common occurrence in everyday life and repeated or traumatic stress can be a precipitating factor for illnesses of the central nervous system, as well as peripheral organ systems. For example, severe or long-term psychological stress can not only induce depression, a leading illness worldwide, but can also cause psychosomatic diseases such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Related key questions include how psychological stress influences both brain and peripheral systems, and what detection mechanisms underlie these effects? A clue is provided by the discovery of the pathways und

[Effects and mechanisms of Herba dendrobii on rats with stomach-heat syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of Herba dendrobii on rats with stomach-heat syndrome and to explore the mechanisms. METHOD: Rats were fed with decoction of Rhizoma Zingiberis for 15 continuous days to induce the model of stomach-heat syndrome. After modeling, Herba Dendrobii (HD) decoction were given (in the doses of 1.5, 0.75 g x kg(-1) respectively) for 10 days. After treatment, amount of the daily diet, volume and absorbance of urine, pellet number and moistness of excrement, color and coating degree of tongue were recorded; the body thermal effects were detected with thermal texture ma

A Cortico-Collicular Amplification Mechanism for Gap Detection.

Auditory cortex (AC) is necessary for the detection of brief gaps in ongoing sounds, but not for the detection of longer gaps or other stimuli such as tones or noise. It remains unclear why this is so, and what is special about brief gaps in particular. Here, we used both optogenetic suppression and conventional lesions to show that the cortical dependence of brief gap detection hinges specifically on gap termination. We then identified a cortico-collicular gap detection circuit that amplifies cortical gap termination responses before projecting to inferior colliculus (IC) to impact behavior.

Reduced sensitivity to social priors during action prediction in adults with autism spectrum disorders.

An extensive amount of evidence has documented a diminished ability to predict and understand other people's action in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Recently, two theoretical accounts, the "Hypo-priors" and the "Aberrant precision" hypotheses, have suggested that attenuated Bayesian priors or an imbalance of the precision ascribed to sensory evidence relative to prior expectations may be responsible for the atypical perceptual experience and difficulties with action understanding in ASD. In the present study, we aimed to directly investigate whether difficulties in the appr

A Bayesian group sequential approach to safety signal detection.

Clinical safety data, usually reported as clinically manifested adverse events (AEs) according to the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA), are routinely collected during the course of a clinical trial involving comparative groups, and periodical monitoring of the safety events is often required to determine whether excessive occurrence of a set of AEs is associated with treatment. To accommodate the structure of reported AEs with the MedDRA system, a Bayesian hierarchical model has been proposed for the analysis of clinical safety data. However, the characteristics of sequent

Setting occupational exposure limits in humans: contributions from the field of experimental psychology.

Psychophysical methods from the field of experimental psychology are evaluated for their utility in the derivation of occupational exposure limits (OELs) for volatile chemicals based on acute sensory irritation in humans. The lateralization threshold method, which involves the localization of trigeminal vapor to the stimulated nostril, is evaluated for its underlying assumptions, reliability and validity. Whole body exposures, on the other hand, which involve the controlled, ambient exposure of human subjects to the irritant at one or a series of concentrations for an extended period are also

Visual search and visual target detection in patients with infarctions of the left or right posterior or the right middle brain artery.

We compared visual target detection and search performance of patient groups with infarctions of (1) the right middle brain artery (R-MBA) and with neglect; (2) the left posterior artery (L-PBA), (3) the right posterior artery (R-PBA), the latter two groups had contralesional hemianopias, or (4) with right hemisphere lesions without hemianopia or neglect. We found that: (1) The first three groups differed from the fourth (control) group in omissions. (2) The first three groups differed only in horizontal search but not in target detection. (3) No vertical search deficit was present for either

Auditory Stimulus Processing and Task Learning Are Adequate in Dyslexia, but Benefits From Regularities Are Reduced.

PURPOSE: The reading deficit for people with dyslexia is typically associated with linguistic, memory, and perceptual-discrimination difficulties, whose relation to reading impairment is disputed. We proposed that automatic detection and usage of serial sound regularities for individuals with dyslexia is impaired (anchoring deficit hypothesis), leading to the formation of less reliable sound predictions. Agus, Carrión-Castillo, Pressnitzer, and Ramus, (2014) reported seemingly contradictory evidence by showing similar performance by participants with and without dyslexia in a demanding auditor

Mechanisms of visual threat detection in specific phobia.

People with anxiety or stress-related disorders attend differently to threat-relevant compared with non-threat stimuli, yet the temporal mechanisms of differential allocation of attention are not well understood. We investigated two independent mechanisms of temporal processing of visual threat by comparing spider-phobic and non-fearful participants using a rapid serial visual presentation task. Consistent with prior literature, spider phobics, but not non-fearful controls, displayed threat-specific facilitated detection of spider stimuli relative to negative stimuli and neutral stimuli. The impact of negative affect on reality discrimination.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People who experience auditory hallucinations tend to show weak reality discrimination skills, so that they misattribute internal, self-generated events to an external, non-self source. We examined whether inducing negative affect in healthy young adults would increase their tendency to make external misattributions on a reality discrimination task. METHODS: Participants (N = 54) received one of three mood inductions (one positive, two negative) and then performed an auditory signal detection task to assess reality discrimination. RESULTS: Participants who received

Characterizing tolerance to trichloroethylene (TCE): effects of repeated inhalation of TCE on performance of a signal detection task in rats.

Previous work showed that rats develop tolerance to the acute behavioral effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) on signal detection if they inhale TCE while performing the task and that this tolerance depends more upon learning than upon changes in metabolism of TCE. The present study sought to characterize this tolerance by assessing signal detection in rats during three phases of TCE exposures. Tolerance was induced in Phase 1 (daily 1-h test sessions concurrent with TCE exposure), extinguished in Phase 2 (daily tests in air with intermittent probe tests in TCE), and reinduced in Phase 3. Effects of sleep deprivation on central auditory processing.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation is extremely common in contemporary society, and is considered to be a frequent cause of behavioral disorders, mood, alertness, and cognitive performance. Although the impacts of sleep deprivation have been studied extensively in various experimental paradigms, very few studies have addressed the impact of sleep deprivation on central auditory processing (CAP). Therefore, we examined the impact of sleep deprivation on CAP, for which there is sparse information. In the present study, thirty healthy adult volunteers (17 females and 13 males, aged 30.75±7.14 years) w

Inhibition is impaired in children with obsessive-compulsive symptoms but not in those with tics.

BACKGROUND: Impaired inhibitory control is thought to be a core deficit in psychiatric disorders where patients exhibit problems with controlling urges. These problems include the urge to perform movements typical of Tourette syndrome and the urge to execute compulsive actions typical of obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, the picture emerging from studies that address this issue is controversial. Furthermore, most studies have only focused on reactive control (the ability of subjects to react to a stop signal), but not on proactive control (the ability of patients to shape their response

Sex differences in face processing: Are women less lateralized and faster than men?

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of sex on hemispheric asymmetry and cooperation in a face recognition task. We used a masked priming paradigm in which the prime stimulus was centrally presented; it could be a bisymmetric face or a hemi-face in which facial information was presented in the left or the right visual field and projected to the right or the left hemisphere. The target stimulus was always a bisymmetric face presented centrally. Faces were selected from Minear and Park's (2004) database. Fifty-two right-handed students (26 men, 26 women) participated in this expe

My left brain and me: a dissociation in the perception of self and others.

We investigated hemispheric asymmetries in face processing using a task in which participants judged the likeness of chimeric faces to their own face and to the face of a close friend based on their memory for those faces. When asked to choose which of two mirror-symmetric images (one made from the left half and one from the right half of a photograph of their face) looked more like themselves as remembered, participants showed a significant bias for the composite corresponding to the half face that lies in their right visual field when they look at themselves in the mirror. They showed the op

Perceptual differences in sequential stimuli across patients with musician's and writer's cramp.

Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between the regularity of motor production and the ability to make accurate perceptual judgments. The current study investigated the temporal abilities of two groups of patients with known movement problems (musicians' and writers' cramp), some of whom have had many years of training in temporal discrimination. Patients and controls (musician and nonmusician, respectively) judged whether the last of six sequential auditory or tactile stimuli occurred earlier or later in comparison to five previously and regularly presented stimuli. In both sens

Identifying EEG-based neurobehavioral risk markers of gaming addiction using machine learning and iowa gambling task.

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), Gaming Disorder (GD), and Internet Addiction represent behavioral patterns with significant psychological and neurological consequences. Affected individuals often disengage from routine activities and exhibit distress upon interruption of gaming, impacting family life and overall well-being. Timely and objective detection methods are essential. This study investigates EEG-based biomarkers in healthy participants, aiming to classify them into two groups based on behavioral patterns observed during the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). EEG and IGT data were collected sim

Neural correlates of face detection.

Although face detection likely played an essential adaptive role in our evolutionary past and in contemporary social interactions, there have been few rigorous studies investigating its neural correlates. MJH, a prosopagnosic with bilateral lesions to the ventral temporal-occipital cortices encompassing the posterior face areas (fusiform and occipital face areas), expresses no subjective difficulty in face detection, suggesting that these posterior face areas do not mediate face detection exclusively. Despite his normal contrast sensitivity and visual acuity in foveal vision, the present study
