Automated 12-Lead Electrocardiograms (ECG) Digitization and WaveForm DataBase (WFDB) Standardization: Insights from Vietnamese Clinical Data.

Many clinics still archive 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) as printed paper records or raster images embedded in PDF reports, which limits interoperability and downstream computational analysis. Here, we present a reproducible digitization protocol that converts ECG report images into WaveForm DataBase (WFDB)-compliant digital signals for standardized downstream use. The protocol consists of (i) grid detection and pixel-to-physical calibration, (ii) automated localization and labeling of the 12 lead regions using an object detection model, (iii) signal preprocessing and normalization, and (i

A dynamic subject-invariant fragment mixing strategy to suppress subject variability in EEG imagined speech classification.

This study presents the first systematic benchmark on a recently released 31-class Arabic imagined-speech EEG dataset for which no prior computational analysis has been reported. The task is exceptionally challenging due to pronounced inter- and intra-subject variability and frequent signal degradations, yielding very low performance when existing architectures are applied directly (baseline accuracy typically within the ∼ 7-15% range). To address these limitations, we propose NeuroSilentia, an EEG-tailored spatio-temporal model that integrates channel reweighting and efficient multi-scale tem

A multimodal fusion network for heart sound abnormality detection and classification.

Objective.Accurate physiological assessment of cardiac function from heart sounds remains challenging due to background noise, variable heart rates, and the need for reliable cardiac-cycle segmentation. This study aimed to develop a fully E2E deep learning framework that extracts diagnostic information directly from raw heart sound recordings for cardiac abnormality detection and classification.Approach.We propose HS-MMNet, an E2E multi-modal deep learning framework designed for physiological heart sound analysis. Recordings are preprocessed (normalization and 25-400 Hz bandpass filtering) and

An explainable EEG epilepsy detection model using friend pattern.

The electroencephalography (EEG) signals are very important for obtaining information from the brain, and EEG signals are one of the cheapest methods to gather information from the brain. EEG signals have commonly been used to detect epilepsy. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to demonstrate the epilepsy detection capability of the presented new-generation relation-centric feature extraction function. In this research, we have presented a new-generation EEG signal classification model, and this model is an explainable feature engineering (XFE) model. To present this XFE model,

Remote Photoplethysmography-Triggered Signal Averaging for Non-Contact Heart Sound Measurement.

Remote photoplethysmography- (rPPG-) triggered signal averaging, a novel approach for the non-contact heart sound measurement, was proposed. Recently, there has been a growing need for a heart sound monitoring method for the early detection of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, we proposed a non-contact heart sound measurement approach using a signal averaging with rPPG peaks as triggers. This approach can emphasize the heart sound, the only sound synchronized in time with the heartbeat, and reduces other ambient noises. Herein, we evaluated the feasibility of our approach. As a result, it wa

Morphological ECG subtraction method for removing ECG artifacts from diaphragm EMG.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic electromyographic (EMGdi) is a helpful method to reflect the respiratory center's activity visually. However, the electrocardiogram (ECG) severely affected its weakness, limiting its use. OBJECTIVE: To remove the ECG artifact from the EMGdi, we designed a Morphological ECG subtraction method (MES) based on three steps: 1) ECG localization, 2) morphological tracking, and 3) ECG subtractor. METHODS: We evaluated the MES method against the wavelet-based dual-threshold and stationary wavelet filters using visual and frequency-domain characteristics (median frequency and

Removal of Motion Artifacts in Capacitive Electrocardiogram Acquisition: A Review.

Capacitive electrocardiogram (cECG) systems are increasingly used for the monitoring of cardiac activity. They can operate within the presence of a small layer of air, hair or cloth and do not require a qualified technician. They can be integrated into wearables, clothing or objects of daily life, such as beds or chairs. While they offer many advantages over conventional electrocardiogram systems (ECG) that rely on wet electrodes, they are more prone to be affected by motion artifacts (MAs). These effects, which are due to the relative movement of the electrode in relation to the skin, are sev

Abnormality classification from electrocardiograms with various lead combinations.

Objective. As cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death, early and accurate diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities for a lower cost becomes particularly important. Given electrocardiogram (ECG) datasets from multiple sources, there exist many challenges to the development of generalized models that can identify multiple types of cardiac abnormalities from both 12-lead ECG signals and reduced-lead ECG signals. In this study, our objective is to build robust models that can accurately classify 30 types of abnormalities from various lead combinations of ECG signals.Approach. Given the chal

A prediction framework with time-frequency localization feature for detecting the onset of seismic events.

Onset detection of P-wave in seismic signals is of vital importance to seismologists because it is not only crucial to the development of early warning systems but it also aids in estimating the seismic source parameters. All the existing P-wave onset detection methods are based on a combination of statistical signal processing and time-series modeling ideas. However, these methods do not adequately accommodate some advanced ideas that exist in fault detection literature, especially those based on predictive analytics. When combined with a time-frequency (t-f) / temporal-spectral localization

ManoMap: an automated system for characterization of colonic propagating contractions recorded by high-resolution manometry.

RATIONALE: Colonic high-resolution manometry (cHRM) is an emerging clinical tool for defining colonic function in health and disease. Current analysis methods are conducted manually, thus being inefficient and open to interpretation bias. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the study was to build an automated system to identify propagating contractions and compare the performance to manual marking analysis. METHODS: cHRM recordings were performed on 5 healthy subjects, 3 subjects with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, and 3 subjects with slow transit constipation. Two experts manua

A comparative study of two novel validated spectrophotometric techniques for resolution of four-component mixtures with severely overlapping spectra.

Two new smart spectrophotometric methods are developed and validated for the determination of the quatertnary mixture of paracetamol (acetaminophen), diphenhydramine, p-aminophenol, and N-oxide degradate of diphenhydramine. Method A is the novel triple divisor ratio difference method, where the triple divisor ratio spectrum of the component of interest shows a significant amplitude difference at two selected wavelengths where the three interfering substances are used as triple divisor and give constant amplitude all over the spectrum. The triple divisors are normalized spectra of tertiary mixt

An Exploration of Behind-the-Ear ECG Signals From a Single Ear Using Inkjet Printed Conformal Tattoo Electrodes.

Wearable sensors placed behind-the-ear are emerging as being very promising for unobtrusive long term monitoring. Factors such as gait, electroencephalography (EEG), and ballistocardiography (BCG) can all be measured from behind-the-ear in a socially acceptable hearing aid based form factor. Previous works have investigated the recording of electrocardiography (ECG) from the ear, but generally with one electrode placed some distance away from the ear itself. This paper uses recently introduced tattoo electrodes to investigate whether ECG components can indeed be measured from behind a single e

Computational techniques for ECG analysis and interpretation in light of their contribution to medical advances.

Widely developed for clinical screening, electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings capture the cardiac electrical activity from the body surface. ECG analysis can therefore be a crucial first step to help diagnose, understand and predict cardiovascular disorders responsible for 30% of deaths worldwide. Computational techniques, and more specifically machine learning techniques and computational modelling are powerful tools for classification, clustering and simulation, and they have recently been applied to address the analysis of medical data, especially ECG data. This review describes the computati

A modular approach to computer-aided auscultation: analysis and parametric characterization of murmur acoustic qualities.

In the present work, a modularized approach to computer-aided auscultation based on the traditional cardiac auscultation of murmur is proposed. Under such an approach, the present paper concerns the task of evaluating murmur acoustic quality character. The murmurs were analyzed in their time-series representation, frequency representation as well as time-frequency representation, allowing extraction of interpretable features based on their signal structural and spectral characters. The features were evaluated using scatter plots, receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), and numerical ex

Development of a portable Linux-based ECG measurement and monitoring system.

This work presents a portable Linux-based electrocardiogram (ECG) signals measurement and monitoring system. The proposed system consists of an ECG front end and an embedded Linux platform (ELP). The ECG front end digitizes 12-lead ECG signals acquired from electrodes and then delivers them to the ELP via a universal serial bus (USB) interface for storage, signal processing, and graphic display. The proposed system can be installed anywhere (e.g., offices, homes, healthcare centers and ambulances) to allow people to self-monitor their health conditions at any time. The proposed system also ena

A study of speech fractal dimensions.

The fractal dimension (D) of a signal gives an estimate of its degree of freedom, which allows estimation of its fluctuations. Using 16 kHz time sampling and the box counting method we studied the Ds of some of the main stationary parts of French speech, the phonemes [a], [e], [i], [o], [y], pronounced 4 times by 10 males and 10 females. Our study demonstrated that the stationary signal of vowels is not fractal, but may, at the smallest scale, provide a kind of signature for each vowel, though the present categorization is not totally significant. Since the box counting method objectifies and

Development of a cardiac acoustic mapping system.

The authors describe a cardiac acoustic mapping system designed to acquire, analyse, and display the amplitude distribution of a phonocardiogram (PCG) recorded from 22 sites on the thorax. A new PCG envelope detection approach, implemented by analogue circuits, enables simultaneous sampling of PCG envelopes from the 22 sites at a rate of 250 Hz/channel. A calibration procedure removes channel-to-channel gain variations, and a coherent averaging of each PCG envelope over several cardiac cycles improves the signal-to-noise ratio. Time congruent samples from the 22 averaged PCG envelopes are then

Assessing digital and quantitative EEG in clinical settings.

Assessment of clinical utility involves a series of steps based primarily on published peer-reviewed medical literature. Relevant publications usually use the scientific method, appropriate control groups, blinded reading, prospective design, and other study elements. Assessments are more credible when conducted by those who do not have a conflict of interest in the technique. A detailed assessment of digital and quantitative EEG was conducted recently by the American Academy of Neurology. The American Clinical Neurophysiology Society was a joint sponsor. This assessment concluded that digital

Concomitant Gradient Effects Across Field Strengths and Gradient Amplitudes: Improved Estimation of Errors and Correction of Concomitant Dephasing and Diffusion Weighting.

PURPOSE: Deleterious effects from concomitant gradients are amplified at lower field strengths and stronger gradients. We aimed to show the signal errors caused by concomitant gradients across a wide range of hardware configurations and propose corrections that can be applied during experimental design and analysis. THEORY AND METHODS: We derived a compact but accurate expression for concomitant gradients and simulated the associated signal bias across field strengths (0.03-7 T) and gradient amplitudes (20-600 mT/m) for asymmetric Maxwell-compensated diffusion encoding gradient waveforms.
