Enhanced range doppler mapping algorithm for passive GNSS based radar aerial target detection.

Using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signal as signal source and applying the principle of radar for object detection is a non-contact and emerging object detection technology. However, due to the problems that weak signal and low resolution, the application of such technology in object detection is very limited. On the basis of the detection of moving targets in the air, this paper puts forward a SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) improvement scheme of RDM (range doppler map). In this paper, bi-static GNSS radar model is employed. The RDM of air target is obtained on the basis of direct a

Measurement and Prediction of Unmixing-Dependent Spreading due to Collinearity in Spectral Flow Cytometry.

Advances in spectral cytometry instrumentation and fluorescent reagents have led to the possibility of ultra-high-parameter panels exceeding 50 colors. However, panel size is limited in practice by unmixing-dependent spreading (UDS), a phenomenon which leads to a progressive deterioration of unmixed signal-to-noise ratios in panels that contain fluorochrome combinations with significant spectral overlap. So far, choosing spectrally compatible sets of fluorochromes that avoid UDS has been a complex and labor-intensive task involving substantial trial-and-error experimentation. Here, we provide

Restoration and enhancement of breast ultrasound images using extended complex diffusion based unsharp masking.

Ultrasound is a well-known imaging modality for the interpretation of breast cancer. It is playing very important role for breast cancer detection that are missed by mammograms. The image acquisition is usually affected by the presence of noise, artifacts, and distortion. To overcome such type of issues, there is a need of image restoration and enhancement to improve the quality of image. This paper proposes a single framework for denoising and enhancement of ultrasound images, where a smoothing filter is replaced with an extended complex diffusion-based filter in an unsharp masking technique.

Hyperspectral Images Denoising via Nonconvex Regularized Low-Rank and Sparse Matrix Decomposition.

Hyperspectral images (HSIs) are often degraded by a mixture of various types of noise during the imaging process, including Gaussian noise, impulse noise, and stripes. Such complex noise could plague the subsequent HSIs processing. Generally, most HSI denoising methods formulate sparsity optimization problems with convex norm constraints, which over-penalize large entries of vectors, and may result in a biased solution. In this paper, a nonconvex regularized low-rank and sparse matrix decomposition (NonRLRS) method is proposed for HSI denoising, which can simultaneously remove the Gaussian noi

Air-Water Binary Gas Integrity Test for Sterilizing and Virus Filters.

UNLABELLED: Reliability of retention performance is of paramount importance for membrane filters designed for sterile and virus filtration. To achieve dependable retention, an integrity test can be applied to ensure the absence of oversize pores or defects that can compromise the retention capability of the filter. Probably the most commonly applied nondestructive integrity test for membrane filters is the gas-liquid diffusion test, with air and water often used as the gas-liquid pair. However, the sensitivity of the air-water diffusion test is limited by the fact that the diffusive flow rate

Assessment of an iterative reconstruction algorithm (SAFIRE) on image quality in pediatric cardiac CT datasets.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cardiac patients often undergo repeat diagnostic testing, resulting in relatively high cumulative medical radiation exposure. Low-dose CT scanning techniques used to decrease radiation exposure may result in reduced image quality. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates a prototype iterative reconstruction algorithm, sinogram-affirmed iterative reconstruction (SAFIRE), to determine the effect on qualitative and quantitative measures of image quality in pediatric cardiac CT datasets, compared with a standard weighted filtered back projection (wFBP) algorithm. METHODS: Seventy-fo

Effects of hearing loss on heart rate variability and skin conductance measured during sentence recognition in noise.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of hearing loss and noise on (1) two autonomic nervous system measures associated with stress (skin conductance and heart rate variability) and on (2) subjective ratings of workload/stress. The authors hypothesized that hearing loss would increase psychophysiological and subjective reactivity to noise during speech recognition tasks. Both psychophysiological and subjective indicators of workload/stress were expected to increase with a reduction in signal-to-noise ratio. DESIGN: Sentence recognition in the presence of babble nois

The Effect of Dialect and Accent on Digit Perception in Noise in Young Listeners With Normal Hearing.

PURPOSE: Dialect and accent factors can impact speech-in-noise testing outcomes. This study investigated these effects on the Integrated Digit-in-Noise (iDIN) test among young adults with normal hearing. METHOD: Dialects involve variations in grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, while accents influence only pronunciation, reflecting geographical or social origins. In Study 1, which examined dialect effects, 33 participants-all native speakers of Mandarin and various Wu dialects except Ningboese-underwent iDIN testing in both Ningboese and Mandarin (as a reference condition). In Study 2, which foc

Two-Stage CNN Model for Joint Demosaicing and Denoising of Burst Bayer Images.

In the classical image processing pipeline, demosaicing and denoising are separated steps that may interfere with each other. Joint demosaicing and denoising utilizes the shared image prior information to guide the image recovery process. It is expected to have better performance by the joint optimization of the two problems. Besides, learning recovered images from burst (continuous exposure images) can further improve image details. This article proposes a two-stage convolutional neural network model for joint demosaicing and denoising of burst Bayer images. The proposed CNN model consists of

Fast multiplanar spoiled gradient-recalled imaging of the liver: pulse sequence optimization and comparison with spin-echo MR imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to optimize a new rapid-acquisition MR pulse sequence, called fast multiplanar spoiled gradient-recalled (FMPSPGR) imaging, for breath-hold imaging of the liver and to compare unenhanced and contrast-enhanced FMPSPGR with standard spin-echo imaging in detecting liver tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pulse sequence was optimized at 1.5 T with a healthy volunteer. Various scanning parameters were evaluated, and liver-spleen signal difference/noise measurements were used to estimate lesion contrast-to-noise ratios. We examined 24 patients with hepatic m

Multiplication of Compound Signals in Neural Array Signal Processing Improves Signal Quality and Detectability of Action Potentials.

Electrode arrays along peripheral nerves can record sensory, motor and autonomic signals propagating in afferent and efferent direction at different conduction velocities. To extract this temporal information in a delay-and-sum approach, velocity-selective recording (VSR) utilizes summation to amplify time-aligned action potentials and average out noise. This improved contrast subsequently improves the automated detection and classification of action potentials-an essential prerequisite to interface with the peripheral nervous system. In this study, we replaced the summation with multiplicatio

Intraarterial portography with gadopentetate dimeglumine: improved liver-to-lesion contrast in MR imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging during arterial portography (MRAP) was performed by the authors in a selected group of 12 patients with hepatic lesions. A low dose of gadopentetate dimeglumine (4 mL of a 0.5-mol/L solution, corresponding to a dose of 0.05-0.07 mmol/kg) was injected into the superior mesenteric artery during acquisition of breath-holding gradient-echo or rapid acquisition spin-echo images. Images were always acquired during the first passage of gadopentetate dimeglumine through the liver parenchyma. An increase in liver-to-lesion contrast was obtained with MRAP imaging (contrast-to-

Noise reduction in abdominal acoustic recordings of maternal placental murmurs.

Fetal phonocardiography is a well-known auscultation technique for evaluation of fetal health. However, murmurs that are synchronous with the maternal heartbeat can often be heard while listening to fetal heart sounds. Maternal placental murmurs (MPM) could be used to detect maternal cardiovascular and placental abnormalities, but the recorded MPMs are often contaminated by ambient interference and noise. Objective:The aim of this study was to compare noise reduction methods to reduce noise in the recorded MPMs. Approach:1) Bandpass filtering (BPF), 2) a multichannel noise reduction (MCh) using

Application of multi-layer denoising based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition in extraction of fault feature of rotating machinery.

Aiming at the problem that the weak features of non-stationary vibration signals are difficult to extract under strong background noise, a multi-layer noise reduction method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is proposed. First, the original vibration signal is decomposed by EEMD, and the main intrinsic modal components (IMF) are selected using comprehensive evaluation indicators; the second layer of filtering uses wavelet threshold denoising (WTD) to process the main IMF components. Finally, the virtual noise channel is introduced, and FastICA is used to de-noise and unmix

A signal-to-noise analysis of multifocal VEP responses: an objective definition for poor records.

Sixty local VEP records, called the multifocal VEP (mfVEP), can be obtained over a wide retinal area. From subject-to-subject, from day-to-day, and from location-to-location, these records can vary in quality presenting a challenge to quantitative analyses. Here three procedures are described for specifying the quality of mfVEP recordings in terms of signal-to-noise ratios. Monocular mfVEPs were recorded in two, 7-min runs. A '2-run signal-to-noise ratio' (2rSNR) was obtained as [RMS(RunA+RunB)]/[RMS(RunA-RunB)]-1, where RMS is the root-mean-square amplitude of the response over the period fro

Vestibular dysfunction in neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis.

Neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis is a genetic disorder characterized by neurologic tumours, most typically vestibular schwannomas that originate on the vestibulo-cochlear nerve(s). Although vestibular symptoms can be disabling, vestibular function has never been carefully analysed in neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis. Furthermore, chemotherapy (e.g. bevacizumab) can reduce tumour volume and improve hearing in neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis, but nothing is known about its vestibular effects. In this report, we studied the three primary vestibular

Perception of aperiodicities in synthetically generated voices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate univariate relationships between perceived dysphonia and variation in pitch perturbation, amplitude perturbation, and additive noise. A time-domain, pitch-synchronous synthesis technique was used to generate sustained vowels varying in each of the three acoustic dimensions. A panel of trained listeners provided direct magnitude estimates of roughness in the case of the stimuli varying in pitch and amplitude perturbation, and breathiness in the case of the stimuli varying in additive noise. Very strong relationships were found between perceived rough

Improved MR images of arterial specimens by submersion in trichlorotrifluoroethane.

MR images of ex vivo arterial specimens immersed in 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (R-113) have improved signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio. R-113 has no hydrogen atoms, so it yields no proton signal; hence, the contrast between the specimen and its background is maximized. SNR is maximized because (i) R-113 is nonconductive so that coil loading and inductive noise are minimized, and (ii) the volume susceptibility of R-113 closely matches that of water and tissue so that T2* effects are minimized. Short-term submersion of porcine aortas in R-113 was found to have no signi

Bias-correction subspace projection method for background noise suppression in OPM-MEG systems.

The Magnetoencephalography (MEG) based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) has emerged as a transformative wearable neuroimaging modality, offering significant advantages such as flexible sensor placement and closer proximity to neural sources. However, these very characteristics impose more stringent requirements on the environmental noise suppression. Among spatial filtering approaches, signal space projection (SSP) estimates the noise subspace directly from empty-room recordings and can be implemented without dense spatial sampling, detailed sensor-geometry modeling, or subject-specifi

Extraction of Fetal ECG From Abdominal and Thorax ECG Using a Non-Causal Adaptive Filter Architecture.

Extracting the Electrocardiogram (ECG) of a fetus from the ECG signal of the maternal abdomen is a challenging task due to different artifacts. The paper proposes a N-tap non-causal adaptive filter (NC-AF) that update the weight by considering the N number of past weights and N-1 number of the reference signal and error signal samples after the processing sample number n. Using the maternal abdominal signal as the primary signal and thorax signal as the reference input, the output e(n) is obtained from the mean of N number of errors. The filtering performance of NC-AF was evaluated using the S
