Dietary inclusion of fibrous corn silages reduces gastric mucosa damage in fattening heavy pigs.

BACKGROUND: Several surveys conducted at slaughter sites have highlighted that gastric lesions are a widespread issue in fattening pigs, mainly due to feeding regimes. Diets with small particle sizes and low fibre contents guarantee high digestibility and performance but generate more rapid stomach emptying with a negative effect on gastric mucosa integrity. Providing fattening pigs with fibrous materials (e.g., straw provided in racks) or coarse fibrous ingredients (e.g., coarse silages) reduced the presence of gastric ulcers. The present research compares a traditional corn-soy-based diet wi

Effect of citrus pulp silage feeding on concentration of beta-cryptoxanthin in plasma and milk of dairy cows.

Citrus pulp is known to contain a functional molecule of beta-cryptoxanthin which is one of the carotenoids showing anti-oxidative capacity. Influences of citrus pulp silage feeding to dairy cows on beta-cryptoxanthin concentration in plasma, other blood properties and milking performances were investigated. Four Holstein cows were fed total mixed ration (TMR) containing citrus pulp silage 20% dry matter (DM) for 2 weeks with free access to the TMR. Dry mater intake, milk production and milk components 2 weeks later were not altered compared with those of the control group without citrus pulp

Partial Replacement of Corn with Jackfruit Silage Maintains Productive Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Feedlot Lambs.

Dependence on corn may increase feed costs and supply vulnerability in tropical livestock systems. This study evaluated replacing corn with whole-fruit jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) silage in feedlot lamb diets. Sixteen castrated male Santa Inês crossbred lambs (26.2 ± 3.6 kg) received diets in which jackfruit silage replaced 0, 333, 666, or 1000 g/kg of corn dry matter in the concentrate. Jackfruit silage had lower non-fibrous carbohydrate gas volume (132.9 vs. 182.9 mL), degradation rate (0.081 vs. 0.096 h-1), and total carbohydrate gas volume (238.5 vs. 298.2 mL) than corn (p <

Digestion and energy balance in lactating dairy cows fed varying ratios of alfalfa silage and grain.

Forty-four multiparous and 43 primiparous Holstein cows were used to study the effect of dietary alfalfa silage: grain ratio on digestion, passage of digesta, and energy balance in a complete lactation experiment. Cows were placed on one of five treatments with forage contents from 38.2 to 98.2% (DM basis) during the first 12 wk of lactation. Forage content was increased during wk 13 to 26 of lactation to give diets containing 48.2 to 98.2% forage and again during wk 27 to 44 to give diets containing 68.2 to 98.2% forage. Both DMI and DM digestibilities decreased as proportion of dietary forag

Influence of Sweet Sorghum Silage and Slow-Release Urea on Lamb Meat Quality and Fatty Acid Profiles.

This study investigated the interactive effects of silage type (corn silage, CS vs. sweet sorghum silage, SS) and nitrogen source (soybean meal, SM vs. slow-release urea, SRU) on lamb meat quality. Results indicated that silage type minimally affected basic chemical composition, although CS-fed lambs exhibited higher ether extract content. Compared to CS, the SS group displayed higher redness (a*) and enhanced antioxidant capacity. SRU improved meat tenderness by reducing Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF) by 20.40%, with limited effects on other quality traits. Notably, fatty acid profiles an

Microbial ecological mechanism of Blumea balsamifera residue promoting fermentation quality and improving feed value of Pennisetum silage.

BACKGROUND: Pennisetum is the most widely used forage in tropical regions around the world but its silage preservation is often challenged by high temperature, humidity, and the proliferation of undesirable bacteria. Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC., a native medicinal plant and industrial crop, produces residues with notable antibacterial and antioxidant properties, suggesting potential as a silage additive. However, its effects and underlying mechanisms on silage fermentation and feeding value are unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we evaluated the impact of B. balsamifera residue on the fermentat
