BACKGROUND: Escharotomy is the primary effective intervention to relieve constriction and impending vascular compromise in deep, circumferential or near-circumferential burns of the extremities and trunk. Training on escharotomy indications, technique and pitfalls is essential, as escharotomy is both an infrequent and high-risk procedure in civilian and military medical environments, including low-resource settings. Therefore, we aimed to validate an educational strategy that combines video-based instruction with a low-cost, low-fidelity simulation model for teaching burn escharotomy.

OBJECT: In recent years, dramatic changes in surgical education have increased interest in simulation-based training for complex surgical skills. This is particularly true for endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), given the potential for serious intraoperative errors arising from surgical inexperience. However, prior to simulator development, a thorough assessment of training needs is essential to ensure development of educationally relevant platforms. The purpose of this study was to conduct a national needs assessment addressing specific goals of instruction, to guide development of simula

One of the fundamental problems facing providers and commissioners of health services is how to maintain the skills and knowledge of the workforce during the initial development and implementation of home care services. This small-scale project sought to ascertain if it was possible to use human patient simulation scenarios to educate community nurses about how to recognize when care at home is appropriate and when it is not. A series of scenarios were developed and delivered to small groups of community nursing staff. A total of 18 qualified nurses took part in the project. Participants were

The artificial heart-lung system is a device that replaces the patient's respiratory and circulatory function during surgery on the heart and great vessels. Users must operate the system by properly recognizing and appropriately evaluating various types of information and by providing feedback to the machine; inappropriate interaction between humans and the machine can cause failures. A questionnaire survey showed that the incidence of problem events during the operation of heart-lung machines was 1/300 to 1/100, both within and outside Japan, and that severe events such as permanent disabilit

AUDIENCE: This simulation is intended for emergency medicine residents.
BACKGROUND: Lateral canthotomy and cantholysis (LCC) is a sight-saving procedure for orbital compartment syndrome (OCS).1 Due to the rarity of OCS, emergency-medicine trainees often have limited exposure and low procedural confidence. In a questionnaire we found that trainees have low confidence levels in performing the procedure attributed to the low incidence of OCS and the scarcity of training opportunities. Existing literature describes LCC task trainers with creation of simulation models, but few provide a reproducib

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic appendectomy is a commonly performed surgical procedure, but few training models have been described for it. We examined a virtual reality module for practising a laparoscopic appendectomy.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study with the following 3 groups of surgeons (n = 45): novices (0 procedures), intermediates (10-50 procedures), and experienced (>100 procedures). After being introduced to the simulator and 1 familiarization attempt on the procedural module, the participants practiced the module 20 times. Movements, task time, and procedure-specific parameters were

INTRODUCTION: Mastoid surgery is technically challenging with complex three-dimensional (3D) anatomy. With reduced access to traditional training methods and increasing new technologies available, virtual reality simulation is being evaluated in a regional training program as an adjunct to existing training structures.
METHODS: Twenty higher surgical trainees were instructed to complete a cortical mastoidectomy and posterior tympanotomy on a VOXEL-MAN simulator (VOXEL-MAN, Hamburg, Germany). A pre- and post-session questionnaire was completed.
RESULTS: The visual analogue score for familiari

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric airway management presents unique challenges, particularly in patients with congenital conditions that increase the risk of difficult intubation. Simulation offers a safe environment for clinicians to practice, yet current pediatric mannequins often lack pathological realism. This study aims to develop and validate a high-fidelity, patient-specific pediatric airway mannequin simulating difficult intubation associated with Crouzon syndrome. Technology or Method: A modular training mannequin was developed through CT-based modeling and additive manufacturing at the T3Ddy Labo

Training microsurgical and neurosurgical techniques by using multimodal simulators in the lab is a fundamental component of neurosurgical residency nowadays. The authors of this chapter describe a training curriculum for residents in neurosurgery implemented at the Zurich Microsurgery Lab, one that integrates different simulators to ensure a seamless and effective progression in microneurosurgical skill acquisition. Neurosurgical residents at all levels of training can benefit from this training scheme, profiting from the realistic replication of surgical scenarios and conditions. Next-generat

BACKGROUND: Given that a surgeon's technical skills affect not only short- but also long-term outcomes, adequate surgical training is very important. We developed the world's first training simulator for laparoscopic right hemicolectomy that does not use animal tissue, called COLOMASTER, which was designed to accurately reproduce the anatomical and membrane structures of the human body. Here, we report the features of COLOMASTER.
METHODS: Dry polyester fibers were used to reproduce the multilayered membrane structure, and the adhesive strength of the layers was controlled using bonding techno

Pericardiocentesis is traditionally taught in clinical settings, which can be stressful. This study aimed to create a low-cost sonographic simulator to improve novice veterinarians' confidence in performing pericardiocentesis. We hypothesized that experienced clinicians would find the simulator realistic, and that novice confidence would improve following simulator practice. Human ethics approval was obtained. The simulator was constructed using ballistic gel, silicon foam, and a 3D-printed spine with ribs. A tennis ball within a balloon, both filled with water, simulated pericardial effusion

BACKGROUND: Rhinological procedures demand a high degree of technical expertise and anatomical knowledge. Because of limited surgical opportunities, ethical considerations and the complexity of these procedures, simulation-based training has become increasingly important. This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of simulation models used in rhinology training.
METHODS: Searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Google Scholar for studies conducted between July 2012 and July 2022. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis ('PRISMA') protocol def

In utero electroporation (IUE) requires high-level training in microinjection through the mouse uterine wall into the lateral ventricle of the mouse brain. Training for IUE is currently being performed in live mice as no artificial models allow simulations yet. This study aimed to develop an anatomically realistic 3D printed simulator to train IUE in mice. To this end, we created embryo models containing lateral ventricles. We coupled them to uterus models in six steps: (1) computed tomography imaging, (2) 3D model segmentation, (3) 3D model refinement, (4) mold creation to cast the actual mod

Aircraft flight simulators have good cost efficiency, high reusability, and high flight safety. All airlines and aircraft manufacturing companies choose it as sophisticated training equipment for ground simulation, effectively reducing pilot training costs, ensuring personnel safety and aircraft wear and tear. The new simulator proposed in this paper combines a digital motion-cueing algorithm, flight software and motion platform to make pilots feel as if they are in the real world. By using EtherCAT technology to drive the motion-cueing platform, it can improve the data transmission speed of t
