Impact of a brief peri-operative counselling session on parental awareness of passive smoking in paediatric ambulatory surgery: A single-centre observational study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) from parents increases paediatric peri-operative respiratory risk, yet peri-operative screening and counselling are rarely implemented. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether a single brief counselling session delivered during the paediatric ambulatory surgery pathway increases parental awareness of SHS harms and influences short-term self-reported behaviour. DESIGN: Prospective observational before-after study with 30-day follow-up. SETTING: Single-centre tertiary-level university hospital ambulatory surgery unit, Liège, Belgium; data collected from 7

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in Parents Following Their Child's Single-Event Trauma: A Meta-Analysis of Prevalence Rates and Risk Factor Correlates.

Evidence suggests parents of children who experience a trauma may develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which can have significant consequences for their own and their child's functioning. As such, identifying the rates and possible correlates for the development of PTSD in parents is of clinical and theoretical importance, and would enhance our understanding of how best to support families in the aftermath of trauma. This meta-analysis of 41 studies (n = 4370) estimated the rate of PTSD in parents following their child's single-incident trauma to be 17.0% (95% CI 14.1-20.0%); when re

Case report of a child with kidney disease: consideration of the risk of a single APOL1 G2 allele with a protective N264K variant on the G0 parental chromosome.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1)-mediated kidney disease is causally associated with the G1/G2 risk alleles of the APOL1 gene, and shows incomplete penetrance shaped by environmental and genomic modifiers. A rare coding variant, N264K, observed on G0 or G2 variants, has been associated with protection in high-risk genotypes. Importantly, emerging data indicate that in some settings a single APOL1 risk allele can confer risk, including reports of end stage kidney disease in G0/G2 individuals, underscoring the need to determine whether N264K protection requires cis configuration with G2 all

Retrospective comparison of parent-reported genetics knowledge, empowerment, and familial uptake of cardiac screening between parents who received genetic counseling by a certified genetic counselor and those who did not: A single US academic medical center study.

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart defect, which can cause severe cardiac complications. BAVs cluster in families and demonstrate high heritability. Cardiac screening for first-degree relatives of individuals with a BAV is recommended. This retrospective two-group study evaluated the impact of cardiovascular genetic counseling provided by a board-certified genetic counselor on parent-reported outcomes by comparing parental responses of those who received genetic counseling by a genetic counselor (GC group) for family history of BAV to those who did not (non-GC grou

Parental mobile health adherence to symptom home monitoring for infants with congenital heart disease during the single ventricle interstage period: A concept analysis.

PURPOSE: Single ventricle heart disease is fraught with risk for infant mortality and morbidity. During the interstage period, or the time between palliative cardiac surgeries, mobile health (mHealth) technology improves the ability of registered nurse coordinators to monitor infant symptoms through parental monitoring and reporting. The concept of parental mHealth adherence to symptom home monitoring of infants with single ventricle congenital heart disease has not been defined, despite increasing use of mHealth technology. METHODS: Rodger's concept analysis method was used to derive a unifi

Clonality analysis suggests that early-onset acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is of single-cell origin and implies no major role for germ cell mutations in parents.

Childhood leukaemia presenting at a young age has been suspected of resulting from a leukaemogenic mutation in parental germ cells, either spontaneously or due to the exposure of a parent to leukaemogenic environmental hazards, particularly ionizing radiation. Mathematical modelling of leukaemogenesis suggests that any such patient would be especially prone to multiple independent leukaemogenic events leading to multiclonality in terms of cell of origin (analogous to bilaterality in familial retinoblastoma). To test this hypothesis we have carried out a search for multiclonal leukaemogenesis i

The Child Life Challenges Scale (CLCS): Associations of a Single-Item Rating of Global Child Adversity with Children's Total Life Stressors and Parent's Childhood Adversity.

BACKGROUND: Although many existing measures tabulate specific risk factors to yield cumulative risk indices, there is a need for low-burden strategies to estimate general adversity exposure. AIMS AND METHODS: This study introduces a brief, new measure of lifetime adversity, the Child Life Challenges Scale (CLCS), and examines its validity in a sample of parents and children residing in emergency housing. The CLCS comprises a single global item for rating cumulative life challenges utilizing either a paper-pencil scale or a sliding scale on a tablet. Parents are provided with anchor examples o

Proof-of-concept of a co-designed mobile game prototype to enhance parental mentalizing: Results from a single-group pretest-posttest feasibility trial (HelpingParentsMinds).

BACKGROUND: Parental stress, a key risk factor for child maltreatment, is rising. The Lighthouse Parenting Program (LPP) shows promise in improving mentalizing and reducing parental burden. However, numerous barriers can hinder participation in face-to-face prevention programs. Digital interventions might help overcome barriers, with serious games considered particularly suitable for promoting intervention adherence. This study evaluated the feasibility of a mobile game prototype to support parental mentalizing and reduce stress. METHODS: Feasibility was assessed in a one-group pretest-postte
