Microblood perfusion of isolated single umbilical artery (ISUA) foetus placenta was evaluated using three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound (3D-PDU). Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein expression in the placenta was also semi-quantitative and qualitatively analysed. Differences between ISUA and control groups were compared. 3D-PDU was used to detect placental blood flow parameters, including vascularity index (VI), flow index, and vascularity flow index (VFI), in 58 foetuses in the ISUA group and 77 normal foetuses in the control group. OBJECTIVES: To review our 25-year experience with a single umbilical artery and fetal echocardiography to estimate the need for this test in cases of an isolated single umbilical artery.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 436 patients with a diagnosis of a single umbilical artery at our institution between 1990 and 2015. Two hundred eighty-eight women had both an anatomic survey and a fetal echocardiogram. Pregnancies with concurrent extracardiac anomalies or aneuploidy were excluded. The study population was divided into 3 groups based on cardiac views on the anatomic survey: no

OBJECTIVE: The objectives this study were to assess the role of third-trimester ultrasound in detection of fetal growth restriction associated with isolated single umbilical artery (SUA) and to correlate sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) with birth weight.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed from 2000 to 2009 at a single academic center. In fetuses with isolated SUA, EFW at follow-up, birth weight, gestational age (GA) at birth, and pregnancy outcome were compared with expected values derived from a statewide database. Categorical variables were analyzed with Fisher exa

INTRODUCTION: Isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) is associated with a fivefold increased risk for perinatal mortality, even though placental blood flow is not reduced compared to healthy fetuses. In recent work, the umbilical cord was shown to have a protective effect against intrapartum fetal acidosis, which is reduced in the case of relevant cord anomalies like iSUA. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of the umbilical cord against fetal acidosis by comparing cardiotocogram (CTG) characteristics of fetuses with iSUA against controls.

We report a case of a single umbilical artery with various fetal anomalies, and a comparative study between prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis and autopsy was done. The prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis included, atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), mitral atresia or stenosis and a single great vessel. At autopsy, ASD, VSD, mitral atresia, overriding aorta and pulmonary atresia were evident. In case of other anomalies, the findings in the prenatal diagnosis and at autopsy were encephalocele, adrenal hypoplasia and a single umbilical artery. The ultrasonic detection o

OBJECTIVE: We present prenatal diagnosis of familial 2p15 microduplication associated with pulmonary artery stenosis, single umbilical artery and left foot postaxial polydactyly on fetal ultrasound.
CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old woman underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age. Amniocentesis revealed the karyotype of 46,XX. Prenatal ultrasound examination at 21 weeks of gestation showed pulmonary artery stenosis, single umbilical artery and left foot postaxial polydactyly. Repeat amniocentesis was performed at 22 weeks of gestation and array comparative gen

BACKGROUND: The inherited causes behind fetuses with a single umbilical artery (SUA) are still poorly understood, largely because published studies are scarce. In the present research, efforts were made to uncover the genetic factors at play and to assess how SUA influences pregnancy outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 5,014 pregnant individuals who underwent prenatal diagnostic testing between September 2017 and April 2023. Of these, 123 fetuses were found to have SUA. Amniocentesis was carried out in all affected cases, with samples analyzed via conventional karyotypin

Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) sequence is a rare complication in monochorionic pregnancies, often leading to fetal heart failure (FHF) in the pump twin. We present a 17-year-old primigravida with a monochorionic monoamniotic twin pregnancy presented with an acardiac twin, single umbilical artery (SUA), and multicystic placenta appearance. Throughout the pregnancy, the pump twin exhibited normal growth without signs of FHF. The infant was delivered at 34 weeks via cesarean section, healthy and without cardiac anomalies. The nonexistence of an impacted intrauterine fetal development an

BACKGROUND: Acardiac twinning complicates monochorionic twin pregnancies in ≈2.6%, in which arterioarterial (AA) and venovenous placental anastomoses cause a reverse circulation between prepump and preacardiac embryos and cessation of cardiac function in the preacardiac. Literature suggested four acardiac body morphologies in which select (groups of) organs fail to develop, deteriorate, or become abnormal: acephalus (≈64%, [almost] no head, part of body, legs), amorphus (≈22%, amorphous tissue lump), anceps (≈10%, cranial bones, well-developed), and acormus (≈4%, head only). We sought to devel

PURPOSE: To ascertain the frequency of chromosomal and other anomalies in fetuses with single umbilical artery.
METHODS: Placentas with single umbilical artery were identified from hospital pathology laboratory records. For each identified case, the next consecutive placenta with two umbilical arteries served as a control. Pathology records, maternal histories, and prenatal ultrasounds when available were reviewed for congenital anomalies, pregnancy complications, and maternal characteristics. When indicated, placental specimens, amniocytes, or neonatal bloods were karyotyped.
RESULTS: Singl

This case control study reports associations between single umbilical artery (SUA) in newborns and some maternal biological characteristics. The study is based on chromosomally normal singleton infants born in Sweden between 1983 and 1990. Information on the maternal characteristics studied was obtained prospectively. There were 2920 cases identified and 5840 controls were selected. An association was found with: previous perinatal death, retained placenta, placenta praevia, maternal diabetes, epilepsy and hydramnios. Increased odds ratios were seen also for spontaneous abortion and abruptio p

BACKGROUND: Postnatal outcome of fetuses with isolated single umbilical artery (SUA) is determined mainly by right ventricular function. Our study examined whether there are differences in right ventricular function during the gestation period of fetuses with isolated SUA compared to healthy fetuses.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 77 fetuses with isolated SUA and 77 gestational age-matched controls from 22 to 39 weeks. For gestational age grouping, the isolated SUA fetuses and the control fetuses were divided into the second trimester group (22-27 weeks; 43 fetuses) and third t

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) is an independent risk factor for perinatal mortality in term neonates with normal estimated fetal weight (EFW) prior to delivery.
METHOD: A population-based study was conducted, including all deliveries occurring between 1993 and 2013, in a tertiary medical center. Pregnancies with and without iSUA were compared. Multiple gestations, chromosomal, and structural abnormalities were excluded from the cohort. Only pregnancies delivered at term with normal EFW evaluated prior to delivery were included. Stratified analysis

OBJECTIVE: To determine the absent side of a single umbilical artery (SUA) and to evaluate whether associated anomalies are related to the side of the missing artery in a Taiwanese population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied SUA fetuses from our computer database of fetal ultrasound in a tertiary medical center in Southern Taiwan. All cases were diagnosed as SUA prenatally using conventional scanners of two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D, respectively) ultrasound, as well as color, power, and high-definition Doppler. The absent side of UA and associated anomalies were ana

OBJECTIVE: To review the available literature on outcome of pregnancy when an isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) is diagnosed at the time of the mid-trimester anomaly scan.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE (1948-2012), EMBASE (1980-2012) and the Cochrane Library (until 2012) for relevant citations reporting on outcome of pregnancy with iSUA seen on ultrasound. Data were extracted by two reviewers. Where appropriate, we pooled odds ratios (ORs) for the dichotomous outcome measures: small for gestational age (SGA), perinatal mortality and aneuploidy. For birth weight we determined the mean dif

OBJECTIVE: To determine the absent side of a single umbilical artery and its association with malformations and abnormal karyotypes.
METHODS: We prospectively studied 102 fetuses from 13 to 39 weeks of gestational age with a prenatally identified single umbilical artery. The absent side, pregnancy data, Doppler findings and the perinatal outcome were reviewed.
RESULTS: (1) The left umbilical artery was absent in 71 (69.6%) and the right in 31 (30.4%) fetuses; (2) Single umbilical artery as an isolated finding occurred in 59 (57.8%) pregnancies and was not associated with aneuploidy. The mean

The absence of one umbilical artery (SUA) is the most common malformation of the umbilical cord. It may accompany other abnormalities or occur as an isolated defect. We examined 885 fetuses, terminated following the prenatal diagnosis of serious or lethal malformations between April 1977 and March 1989, for the presence of SUA. We found 62 cases of SUA. This represents an incidence of 7.01% (62/885). The most common abnormalities found in association with SUA were: (1) multiple malformations (8/11 cases, SUA incidence = 72.7%), (2) ADAM complex (7/14 cases, SUA incidence = 50.%), (3) multicyst

Umbilical cord rupture, though rare, is a severe obstetric complication with significant implications for neonatal morbidity and mortality. We present the case of a 38-year-old primiparous female diagnosed with a single umbilical artery (SUA) and velamentous cord insertion (VCI) in late pregnancy. At 40 weeks of gestation, during labor induction, the patient suddenly experienced massive vaginal bleeding and fetal bradycardia, necessitating an emergency cesarean section. Postoperatively, it was confirmed that the umbilical cord had ruptured. The neonate required immediate and intensive resuscit
