In-situ evaluation of barrier-cream performance on human skin using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to evaluate the effect of barrier creams (skin protective creams) on human skin. A Nd: YAG laser at 1,064 nm was used with a pulse energy of 100 mJ. A method was developed to measure the effectiveness of barrier creams against zinc ion absorption from aqueous zinc chloride solution and oil paste zinc oxide, which represent model hydrophilic and lipophilic metal compounds, respectively. Zinc was chosen since it posed no risk to human skin. 3 representative commercial barrier creams advertised as being effective against lipophilic and hydrophi

An anaesthetic lidocaine/prilocaine cream (EMLA) for epicutaneous application tested for cutting split skin grafts.

A 5% eutectic mixture of the two local anaesthetics lidocaine and prilocaine (EMLA, Astra Läkemedel AB) has been tested for application to the skin in the removal of split skin grafts. EMLA is an oil-in-water emulsion cream, containing 50 mg of active substances per ml (25 mg lidocaine, 25 mg prilocaine). The cream has been used on the donor sites of 146 patients and was applied a minimum of 1 h 30 min before surgery. 123 patients (84.3%) experienced adequate analgesia, feeling only the pressure of the dermatome or slight pain without objection to the skin graft being cut. 20 patients (13.7%)

Topical delivery of doxepin using liposome containing cream: An emerging approach in enhancing skin retention.

Conventional formulation of topical doxepin has similar antihistaminic effects as oral doxepin; however, its efficacy is limited due to poor localized effects on the skin. This study was designed to compare the ex vivo permeation and retention of two topical doxepin formulations; liposomal cream and plain cream. Doxepin-containing liposomes were prepared with the thin-film hydration method and assessed for size, size distribution, morphology, entrapment efficiency (EE%) and stability Using rat skin specimens in a Franz diffusion cell. Doxepin concentration in skin and receptor fluid was quanti

Tolerability comparison of adapalene gel, 0.3% versus tazarotene cream, 0.05% in subjects with healthy skin.

BACKGROUND: Topical retinoids, including adapalene and tazarotene, are a primary treatment choice for patients with acne. Adapalene is currently marketed in a 0.1% concentration in gel and cream formulation. A new gel containing a higher concentration (0.3%) of adapalene has been developed. In clinical studies, adapalene 0.1% concentration has proven to be better tolerated than other retinoids in skin treatment. However, the tolerability of adapalene gel 0.3% has yet to be compared to other topical retinoids. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the local cutaneous tolerability o

Topical application of cream-emulsified CD86 siRNA ameliorates allergic skin disease by targeting cutaneous dendritic cells.

Induction of the co-stimulatory molecule CD86 on dendritic cells (DCs) in the peripheral tissues is a critical event in triggering antigen-specific immune responses. In this study, we propose a new small interfering RNA (siRNA)-based therapy using cream-emulsified CD86 siRNA, targeting DCs for murine contact hypersensitivity (CH) and atopic dermatitis (AD)-like disease. Topical application of CD86 siRNA efficiently inhibited CH and markedly decreased the numbers of infiltrating CD86(+) or major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II(+) cells in murine ear skin. The total number of cells, th

Dimethicone barrier cream prevents infection of human skin by schistosome cercariae: evidence from Franz cell studies.

One approach to the prevention of schistosomiasis is the use of topical formulations to inhibit cercarial penetration of skin. A number of formulations containing either cercaricidal ingredients or components designed to inhibit penetration have been studied, but with variable results. Such studies have rarely considered the persistence of inhibitory effects through time, and to date, there have been no systematic investigations of barrier formulations. The aim of this study was to use Franz cells to investigate the effect of such barrier creams on the penetration of S. mansoni cercariae into

Topical cream loaded with upcycled citrus bioactive chitosan-pectin nanoparticle protects skin from UV-induced photoaging.

Photoaging, driven by chronic ultraviolet (UV) exposure, accelerates skin aging through inflammation, collagen degradation, and oxidative stress. This study presents a novel and sustainable anti-photoaging formulation, Nano Citrus Cream (NCC), based on chitosan-pectin (CHI-PEC) nanoparticles loaded with a polyphenol-rich grapefruit extract and orange essential oil. The optimized nanoparticles (CH-PEC, 1:1) exhibited high encapsulation efficiency (up to 87.9%), nanoscale size (49-101 nm), and colloidal stability (+30 to +54 mV). When incorporated into a topical cream, NCC showed shear-thinning

Assessment of the efficacy and safety of a new complex skin cream in Asian women: A controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Medical products such as hydroquinone and tretinoin have been widely used to treat various types of skin hyperpigmentation. However, these products are limited in daily use given their adverse effects. Other alternative agents with fewer adverse side effects have been developed. However, single agents often do not produce satisfactory results. AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new brightening complex cream containing niacinamide, tranexamic acid, oxyresveratrol, glutathione disulfide, and linoleic acid. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 26 Korean women seeking to ligh

Beneficial use of Cetaphil moisturizing cream as part of a daily skin care regimen for individuals with rosacea.

INTRODUCTION: Rosacea is a common and chronic disorder characterized by flushing, erythema, papules, pustules, and telangiectasia on the central part of the face. Because the facial skin of individuals with rosacea is particularly sensitive, irritants can trigger a worsening of the signs and symptoms of the disease. This enhanced sensitivity is thought to be linked to a deficient stratum corneum barrier function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, 20 individuals receiving twice-daily applications of metronidazole 0.75% gel for at least 15 days applied a gentle non-irritating moistur
