Ferroptosis: Mechanism and connections with cutaneous diseases.

Ferroptosis is a recognized novel form of programmed cell death pathway, featuring abnormalities in iron metabolism, SystemXc-/glutathione axis, and lipid peroxidation regulation. A variety of ferroptosis inducers can influence glutathione peroxidase directly or indirectly via diverse pathways, leading to decreased antioxidant capacity, accumulated cellular lipid peroxides, and finally inducing ferroptosis. To date, mounting studies confirm the association of ferroptosis with various cutaneous diseases, including skin homeostasis, neoplastic diseases, infectious diseases, genetic skin disease,

Trace element zinc and skin disorders.

Zinc is a necessary trace element and an important constituent of proteins and other biological molecules. It has many biological functions, including antioxidant, skin and mucous membrane integrity maintenance, and the promotion of various enzymatic and transcriptional responses. The skin contains the third most zinc in the organism. Zinc deficiency can lead to a range of skin diseases. Except for acrodermatitis enteropathic, a rare genetic zinc deficiency, it has also been reported in other diseases. In recent years, zinc supplementation has been widely used for various skin conditions, incl

Fever and periorbital edema: a review.

Fever and periorbital swelling are the manifestation of a broad array of diseases. Among them are emergency situations, which need prompt physician input. Swiftly formulating a differential diagnosis approach is crucial. Diseases causing fever and periorbital edema are either local or systemic. Nevertheless, their impact can be systemic if they evade diagnosis. Infectious diseases and non-infectious diseases (inflammatory and allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases, neoplastic diseases, and trauma) can all lead to fever and periorbital edema. A meticulous history and physical examination in ass

Obesity and the risk and outcome of infection.

The interactions between obesity and infectious diseases have recently received increasing recognition as emerging data have indicated an association between obesity and poor outcome in pandemic H1N1 influenza infection. Obesity is an established risk factor for surgical-site infections, nosocomial infections, periodontitis and skin infections. Several studies indicate that acute pancreatitis is more severe in the obese. Data are controversial and limited as regards the association between obesity and the risk and outcome of community-acquired infections such as pneumonia, bacteremia and sepsi

[Skin manifestations of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract].

Diseases of the gut frequently show skin symptoms. These can give first and important clues in regard to diagnosis. In general the etiology can be divided into genetic disorders, chronic inflammation, drug reaction, infectious diseases or related to malignancy. In genetic disorders increasing knowledge about the involved genes is available, allowing prenatal diagnosis and screening of clinically not affected family members. Especially in cancer prone syndromes early diagnosis and preventive treatment is crucial. Inflammatory bowel diseases show a high prevalence, therefore necessitating the kn

[Psoriasis as Koebner phenomenon in erythma migrans].

The Koebner phenomenon, described by Koebner in 1876, represents the appearance of isomorphic skin lesions in uninvolved skin in patients suffering from certain skin diseases. It can be induced by different mechanical, chemical, thermal and infectious stimuli. A 48 year-old woman developed an exacerbation of a latent psoriasis as a Koebner phenomenon in a migrating erythema caused by Borrelia afzelii infection.

Cutaneous manifestations of internal diseases.

Collaboration between specialists is necessary for good practice of medicine. The dermatological examination, mainly based on visual characteristics, can greatly help other specialisms when confronted with a seemingly futile skin anomaly. We discuss the various cutaneous features of some metabolic and infectious diseases, the pitfalls in diagnosing lupus erythematosus without knowledge of skin disease and the relationship of dermatological diseases as cutaneous vasculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, Sweet's syndrome, pemphigus and more to internal disease.

Scabies mimicking relapsing atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease clinically characterized by eczematous skin manifestations. Sometimes, it can manifest with non-specific clinical features, which are common with other skin conditions, such as infectious and neoplastic diseases. We would like to underline the importance of accurate dermatologic examination and rigorous anamnesis in patients affected by AD to avoid misdiagnosis and delayed treatments.

Infectious disease outbreaks in the wake of natural flood disasters: global patterns and local implications.

Climate change is an urgent global health challenge, with floods becoming increasingly frequent and exacerbating the spread of infectious diseases. With its diverse climates and recurring natural disasters, Latin America is particularly susceptible to outbreaks following floods. These events disrupt ecosystems and create ideal conditions for the spread of waterborne and vector-borne pathogens. Floods also damage infrastructure, displace populations, and restrict access to clean water and healthcare services, further compounding public health risks. This review assesses the impact of floods on

Skin Microbiome Overview: How Physical Activity Influences Bacteria.

The skin cannot be considered as just a barrier that protects against physical, chemical, and biological damage; it is a complex and dynamic ecosystem that varies across lifespans. Interest in the relationship between physical activity and skin microbiota has grown significantly in recent years. The skin microbiota has a crucial role in skin functions and physiology, and an imbalance, known as dysbiosis, is correlated with several diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), infectious disease, obesity, allergic disorders, and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Among the causes of dysbiosis, the

[Pustular diseases of the newborn].

In the newborn, there exists a wide spectrum of pustular skin diseases. These range from transitory, benign adaptation disorders up to systemic, life threatening illnesses. In 30-60% of newborns pustules are observed in association with the relatively harmless Erythema toxicum, the origin of which is still unknown today. It is necessary to differentiate this from the pustular diseases which may be of infectious or non-infectious nature and which require therapy. Typical pathogens include Malassezia furfur, Staphylococci, Streptococci, Candida spp. and the herpes virus group.

Hospital readmissions with acute infectious diseases in New Zealand children < 2 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases are the leading cause of hospital admissions in young children. Hospitalisation with an infectious disease is a recurrent event for some children. Our objective was to describe risk factors for infectious disease readmission following hospital admission with an infectious disease in the first two years of life. METHODS: We performed a national cohort study of New Zealand children, born 2005-2009, with an infectious disease admission before age 24 months. Children readmitted with an infectious disease within 12 months of the first infectious disease admission we

Clinical Manifestation of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Following a Mechanical Trauma.

Unusual skin ulcers frequently represent a diagnostic challenge. When the most common disease entities such as arterial, venous or diabetic ulcers have been excluded, the question of further differential diagnoses and procedures arises. Other possible causes include chronic inflammatory diseases, neoplasia, self-inflicted wounds, primary infectious diseases and physical/chemical damage to the skin. To narrow down the differential diagnoses, a detailed history of the patient is essential, which also needs to include events further back in time.

[Waves of refugees represent challenge for European dermatologists].

With the increasing number of asylum seekers in recent months, European dermatologists have been confronted with rising numbers of patients with formerly rare skin diseases and unusual infectious skin diseases that were previously scarcely observed at our latitude. Thorough examination of the patients medical history, including the routes of travel and the country of origin of the patients, detailed clinical and laboratory examinations, and - if necessary - referral to a special treatment center allow rapid and targeted treatment.
